I am now on my second book of these postcards. So far, the recipients have really enjoyed them. (That's why I bought a second book.)The good: Some of the photographs are very funny. For example, one card shows a young couple with a baby (or toddler, I can't really tell). The parents are kissing the child, one on each cheek, and the child looks absolutely horrified. In another photograph, a young boy is grinning extremely widely, sporting a lovely 7-10-split grin. Both of these cards, I think, would bring a smile to just about anyone. The cards are also very sturdy, completely suitable for posting. They are thicker than commercial postcards of the sort you might buy on vacation, and they require only the postcard rate to mail. (At least I think they do. I used the postcard rate on every card in the first book, and all were delivered.) The back of each card is divided down the middle, and there is almost no text to interfere with a message. (There is a very small copyright notice running along the left side of the back of each card, but it's not obtrusive.)Now the not so good. Some of the photographs simply are not that funny, at least to me. For example, one card has a family of four standing in front of a "Welcome to South Dakota" sign, and the caption below the photograph reads, "It's the journey, not the destination." Now, it's possible that I simply miss what's funny in the photograph, but the best I can figure out is that the idea of going to South Dakota is supposed to be a joke in and of itself. Many of the photographs are funny simply because of the time when they were taken. For example, the Charged GBH shirt on the child in the photograph on the cover probably sets the picture in the 1980s, and I'm sure the boys at the time were proud of their look. It's probably a pretty good photograph to use to judge whether the book would appeal to you. There are others that depend pretty much entirely on whether the '80s were inherently funny. In short, it's a mixed bag, but based on the reports of those to whom I write, the mixture tilts decidedly toward funny.

Honestly, I love the idea of these postcards and after seeing similar ones I had high hopes for them. The quality was nice with strong card stock and good quality photos but the captions on more than half really fell short for us. It wouldn't have been worth taking a star away if they were never seen pictures but many of these have been used in other media and with different commentary so the bar ended up being higher. I thought they would be original photos.

These are hysterically funny. Have the whole book out on a coffee table and people pick it up and laugh out loud. Sent some out in the mail the last time I traveled. They are just a hoot. Will order more if this author comes up with another postcard book of these funny awkward photos.

A wonderful collection of postcards!!! I bought this book for my "Postcrossing Addiction" and loved it! The recipients of the postcards really enjoyed the images. Made of sturdy card stock with lots of room for writing your message AND the address of where it's going to! Cards are easily detachable! A great value for the price!

I enjoyed sending these postcards to my friends in prison to put a smile on their face and make them laugh. My friends loved them and even the correctional officers read them and laughed.

These are fun. I'm sending them to my family.

Using these for our wedding guest book for guests to sign and send to us after the wedding with wedding wishes. The postcards are on thick material which makes them easy to put apart from the binding.

Photos are hilarious, as always, but the jokes/comments printed are just not relevant to the photos. It really takes away from the hilarity of the photos, themselves.

Review

Praise for Down and Derby“As someone who has witnessed the many transitions of roller derby almost from the beginning, I can say that this chronicle isn’t just for fans of all the stages of the game, but for anyone who wants to enjoy an inspiring story about truly fascinating people.” —Jerry Seltzer, derby pioneer and owner of the original Roller Derby league“Fast, dirty, seductive, kooky, cunning, foxy, cheeky, wicked, crazy, bad arse and most importantly, no bullshit. These are the words that tumble from my mind to my fingers having read Down and Derby. Veterans in the world of roller derby, Axles and Kasey are an inspiration to derby girls everywhere, myself included. The Whip It Hurl Scouts couldn’t have done it without them. I can’t say enough about these women or this book. Game on!” —Zoë “Bloody Holly” Bell, stuntwoman and star of Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof “Roller derby is one of the most empowering and intriguing worlds I’ve ever come across. It’s amazing to encounter a sport where women get out there and do such extraordinary things. But derby is more than just a sport, it’s a sisterhood.” —Drew Barrymore“A rock’em sock’em history and how-to guide by two roller girls about the derby they love to death. Told in a no-BS style that makes you feel like an insider sharing a beer after the match. This is sparkly, terrific, and bad ass!” —John Doe of X“Feminism can come in the form of placards and protests, but Down and Derby proves that a girl’s liberation can also involve strapping on a pair of skates, taking on a kick-ass nickname, and throwing a few hip checks in the process.” —Marisa Meltzer, author of Girl Power“Part manifesto, part how-to-guide, Down and Derby demystifies the world of roller derby, showing readers it’s as inclusive as it is cool. After finishing this book, you no longer have an excuse for keeping your boring name or for never trying on a pair of skates. This is required reading for anyone who's searching for new ways to be fearless.” —Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney“Axles of Evil and Kasey Bomber are two of the most sincere, awesome, kick-ass women I’ve ever met. They are champions of roller derby—and not just in a flashy way but in a really smart way. Being able to have learned to skate under their wing has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Down and Derby is the next best thing to training with them personally. If you love derby this is the book you’ve been waiting for.” —Ellen Page, star of Whip It“As the author of an old Roller Derby book, let me just say this to the new kid on the rink: up with Down and Derby. Whether you’re already a Derby doll or a doll wannabe it’s required reading.” —Frank Deford, , author of Five Strides On The Banked Track

An absolutely necessary, fun, well-written, and especially encouraging book on starting, learning more about, supporting and playing roller derby! It encourages me so much as a cadet and I very often refer to this book for help on derby rules, supporting the team, and just delving more into the sport you wish to learn more about or one you choose to pursue!A must-by and a very good introduction book for anyone curious or even a vet.

Inspiring book for any new derby girl and loads of info on the history of derby and start of modern derby for any roller derby enthusiast!

I have been in Roller Derby for just under a year and so many of the comment, interviews etc in this book just made me smile (and maybe get nearly teary) as this book is so perfectly real.I loved the interviews and while I knew most of the history already, this is a great book for anyone in derby or just interested in derby. You should buy this book... and I dont tell people that very often.

A little cheesy at times, but overall it was a decent read.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my best friend last Christmas because she was part of a roller derby team. She LOVED her book!!! She said she could not put it down and finished it within the week. She even let her sister read it, and she fell in love with it too! I haven't read it but since they loved it so much, I decided to give it 5 stars!

Down and Derby is comprehensive narrative of the sport -- its rules, history, cultural impact, personalities and evolution -- written in an intelligent and light style. Every Saturday for the last two months, I've started my day with a few chapters. Now that it's done, I'm looking for my next off-the-track derby fix, but I know I'll regularly cracking this one open for tips, anecdotes and as a reference source.

I thought this was very well done. It is a great tool for anyone from the expert all the way down to the casual fan. It gives a great perspective for those thinking about joining derby at every level and in every area. It also gives a good idea of what those involved have to go through to put on the bouts for the fans. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone.

This is a great history of derby with some "do's" and "don'ts" about getting involved in derby. It reads a little like a sports history written by a player as opposed to a writer, but it's still readable and well edited.

#338,933 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I read the 2nd in the series through my local library, and enjoyed it so much that I purchased the rest of the series. This book is the first in the series, and it is about a group of young girls who attend and live at an old ballet academy where strange things happen. In this particular one, the girls start getting their stuff stolen from their rooms and they decide to solve the mystery of who is behind all of it. The ending was pretty far fetched and a little strange, definitely went in a different direction than I was expecting. I did not enjoy it as much as the other book but it was still a quick, fun read.

The climax and resolution were not compatible. The story needed at least 25-50 pages more to do character development, conflict development and a satisfying resolution. BORING!

This starts with a mean girls vibe, and it looks like it may just play itself out as a "scholarship-student-tormented-by-the-less-talented-rich-girls" drama set in a ritzy ballet school. Wrong. That gets turned around very quickly and the book morphs into a "school-girl-besties-chase-the-ghost" romp that's just right for a middle grader who likes a little bit of creepiness with her girlfriend bonding. No plot spoilers here. Anyway, the plot hardly matters. It starts as a mystery and takes a sharp turn into "eeevil", but it's evil the way "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" was evil. That's O.K. by me; how creepy do you want your middle graders' books to be?What we do get is a nice cast of BFF's. Madeleine is the super talented ballet student who is a new scholarship student at a prestigious residential ballet school. Right off the bat she crosses Ophelia, the reigning prima donna. Ophelia has a sidekick who is pretty independent, and there are two twins who are secondary sidekicks. Madeleine proves her mettle in a skirmish with the head mistress, and the fearless five are formed. Now, I'm being a bit of a wiseguy, but actually it is very nice and entertaining to have a book where the new girl is nervous, has a bumpy start, shows the right stuff, and forms a bond with some people who will be her real friends. I know that's a little out of fashion, currently, in middle grade books, but I'm happy to find it when I can. It helps that all of the girls have a sense of humor, a little vinegar, and engage in good-natured and rather clever banter. So, it's cheerful, high energy, deeply implausible, and zips right along. A nice middle grade find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Madeleine's mother had made a lot of sacrifices to get her into the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance, the "most prestigious ballet school in the country." She had that scholarship and that was going to be a big help. Dario was kind of a creepy looking place and Madeleine was definitely going to be homesick. It was going to be more difficult because instead of being by far the best dancer at her old school, they all were here. Madame Puant would be the instructor, but soon trouble would erupt. Madeleine touched her "mother's antique gold necklace" for comfort, but she'd need a lot more than that soon.It wasn't long before one of the girls was giving her the stink eye and pummeling her with criticism. "I told you not to crowd me, you freak." Making friends would be pretty difficult for Madeleine at Dario, but making enemies seemed easy. That aside, everything about the place was weird and gave her the chills. "Something was wrong," she thought to herself, the house had a touch of evil in it somewhere. Madeleine was shocked when she found someone had actually stolen her necklace from her room. It had to be that nasty bully, Ophelia, or was it?There was a "thief at Dario," but whomever it was, it wasn't of the human kind. All the girls were missing sentimental items, including Ophelia. "I think it's the house itself. I think we are dealing with a ghost." Perhaps Ophelia was right. Emma and Sophie, the twins, and Kayley were ready to join Ophelia and Madeleine in the search for answers. They were going to head into the tunnels underneath the school. "The smell of mold, mildew and graves crept into Madeline's nose," but there was something or someone else down there. Their midnight search was about to uncover evil lurking beneath the school, but could they face it?This is a creepy new tale at the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance young readers will love. This tale, of course, has just the right amount of fear factor to keep readers turning those pages. The book is perfect for confident or reluctant readers who are just embarking on a quest for the eerie and unusual. The characters and plot are not particularly well-developed, but will definitely encourage a move into the next in the series, Stolen Luck, to find out what goes on in that creepy academy. The new kid on the block, the bully, the quest for friendship, rivalries, and the ghostly unknown will be of high interest to some readers. It's a quick, fun read for young readers.THE DARIO QUINCY ACADEMY OF DANCE:#1 Leaping at Shadows#2 Stolen Luck#3 The Cursed Ballet#4 Twin DangersThis book courtesy of the publisher.

What Are You?: Voices of Mixed-Race Young People

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-In this sensitive, thoughtful collection of interviews, essays, and poetry, over 40 young adults ranging in age from 14 to 26 relate their experiences growing up in the United States. Their racial identities represent a wide blend of cultures: European, African, Asian, Native American, Jewish, Arabic, Caribbean, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander. Arranged thematically with occasional author notes offering clarification and transition, the primarily upbeat testimonies address issues of discrimination, dating, family dynamics, and self-esteem. The contributors have had to respond to prejudice both inside and outside their own ethnic groups in addition to universal problems, such as financial worries, divorce, parent and sibling conflicts, and academic pressures. Although American society challenged them to "check one box," declaring the race they belong to, they have resisted categorization, seeking instead to understand and express the rich blend that is their personal heritage. They have drawn strength and optimism from a support network provided by family members, organizations, and/or advocacy groups. A helpful resource section includes annotated lists of affinity and advocacy groups and Web sites, as well as relevant fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, and movies and videos. While underscoring the complexity of the mixed-race experience, these unadorned voices offer a genuine, poignant, enlightening and empowering message to all readers.Gerry Larson, Durham School of the Arts, NC Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

"In the eyes of many people I am the product of a relationship that wasn't supposed to happen." "I'm no tragedy, and no exotic other." "I'm no jungle-fever rainbow baby." The contemporary voices are disturbing, frank, witty, and heartfelt. In essay, interview, and poetry, 45 mixed-race young people between the ages of 14 and 26, from all over the U.S., speak about their growing up. Whether black and white, white and Asian, Hispanic and black, Jewish and black, or whatever, each one is intensely personal; yet each one speaks to universals of coming-of-age as an outsider who doesn't fit into accepted categories. You read one piece, and it seems to say it all; turn to the next young person, and there is more surprise and drama. As with all authentic writing, the closer you get, the more diversity you see, and the more connections. Some speak of shame, some of pride; most have experienced both, in school and community, in their own families, in their individual searches for roots and love. Gaskins is a journalist for a teen educational magazine and is herself of mixed race. She allows the young people to speak for themselves, but she adds brief commentary where necessary as well as an excellent overview, and the insights of historians, therapists, and other experts. She applauds the recent revolutionary change that allows people to check more than one racial category on federal forms. The extensive annotated list of resources--including books, movies, Web sites, and advocacy groups--adds to the value of this landmark book. Read this with Bell's novel Zack, reviewed on p.1689, about one boy's search for his family roots, and with Nash's Forbidden Love, p.1687, for a view of American history through the lens of race. When our biracial bicultural daughter hit teen years this issue became a lot for her. We bought this book based on the recommendations and my wife and I learned a lot. I don't think I've ever wanted to actually thank an author before.

Read the more interesting chapters out loud to my half japanese son. I think the material is thoughtful and important for young people who can have identity and conforming issues when of mixed heritage. In a few generations, I expect this will be much less of an issue.

My niece is biracial. I can't pretend to understand what challenges she is facing at her all white middle school, but I purchased this book because I wanted her to know that she's not alone. This is a great, easy read for anyone who has ever experienced discrimination. I loved it!!!

Exceptional book covering a vwey unique subket matter - from a youth's own experience. This will give a peek into their world which oftern with "what are oyu", not who, whays you name, what do you do.....

loved it

So when I read, I don't do it like normal, Kay? See, I jump around to different parts. I can start off reading the introduction, then hop to the third chapter. Or read the first five chapters in order, then read the rest of the book from the last chapter backward to chapter five. I like reading how I feel like. So I've read bits and chapters of this book. I don't really like it so much. It's also in heavy compitition with about five other books I'm reading though. I don't like this book because it feels superficial. Nobody I know has grown up in an area that descriminates against mixed people, maybe blacks or latinos or whites. But mixed people are like the ideal race now. So these stories feel fake. Lame and made up. It's like a self-pity marathon. But it's interesting. So I like that it's a collage. Some stories were told great. So the book gets made real again by spots and flicks of amazing storytelling. I want a modern book, I wanted this to be more current; past 2005. It's a 90s book. I wanted creativity. I wanted mixed people who knew they were mixed and were creatively expressing it. I just wanted sophistication and I didn't find it here. I like this book because it tried to tackle the awkward, messy issue of mixed culture. It tried.

I am so glad that this was book was written! The young people who were featured were sensitive and engaging writers, who gave us all a further sense of struggle with biracial/multiracial identity in this country. For me, knowledge is power, and this book was definitely empowering. It de-emphasized statistics, faceless percentages that we read about in the newspaper and hear about on television that represent the increase in bicultural/multiracial people in this country.I find it really sad that in a culture like the United States where we claim to be a "melting pot" we still haven't managed to get over who melts, and how they melt, as well as with which groups they mix with in the melting process. Speaking as a culturally-diverse young woman, about to graduate from college, I think it is of invaluable importance that people feel good about their cultures, feel free to express them and be given the respect they deserve. One point that was raised in WHAT ARE YOU? that I can definitely relate to is the scrutiny people experience when on the receiving end of other's judgments and prejudices. I am Polish/Latina/Lebanese and I can't tell you how many times people have said, "You don't look (fill in the blank)." The world has to realize people come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and the images projected on the boob tube, in the movies and in music are not a fair representation of all people. They are just a cross section of examples. We need to be open to the diversity of all. Then, maybe we can come to accept ourselves through accepting others.

This brilliant book is a must for young adult collections in both public library and school library settings. With minimal commentary from author Pearl Fuyo Gaskins who grew up mixed-race in a time when it was definitely viewed as an oddity at best, the voices of mixed race young people growing up today is revelatory, honest, at times raw, but above all offers a spark of hope for our divisive society. Many of these young people have had to face what few adults care to think about, but what comes through as you read is that, despite unpleasant or even cruel reactions from people, these young people have found strength in their heritage and a realization that they are the wave of the future. The photographs that accompany many of the entries are an inspiration and add greatly to the impact of the message. The "voices" of these twenty odd individuals are varied not only in their multiracial biology, but also in their experiences. Those who grow up in insular communities where racial mixing is rare have extremely different, usually more negative, experiences than those lucky enough to grow up in places where their fellow mixed race teenagers are legion. For example, those teens from the California coastal cities view their background as an advantage that gives them greater perspective on the world. They have pride in their heritage and are viewed by their peers as more cool because of it. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about the future cohesion of our society, but I especially recommend it to young people of any race as a glimpse into the fabulous variety that is America and the pride we should all feel about who we are. This is a book that inspires hope for one race: the human race.

This was a great story that was hard to put down. I loved the development and depth of the characters. Hope is hard-working vet that had a failed marriage. She was disappointed by the failure of her marriage, yet she rose above the circumstances and became a better person and a stronger person. I loved her tenacity and the passion she had for her work. Levi was a special man that loves his little girl and his mother. Levi was a special man that is loyal and patient. Watching Levi and Hope together was electric. The sparks were flying, but they were clean. I recommend this book to those that love sweet romance of second chances.

Well worth reading. A romance that might have happened years before - but both too shy about telling the other - or thinking the other cares for another, etc. etc. Then when you think, finally, you want to sit them both down facing one another to speak just how they feel about the other - or just slap 'em in the head - LOL - But really this is how so many are today and this book is well written. There are also several times I laughed out loud or just had a good chuckle!

WHERE THERE IS HOPE BY BEAKY DOUGHTY IS A OUTSTANDING BOOK. IT IS ABOUT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, BUT THE COUPLE HAS SO MANY HURDLES IN THEIR WAY. AND ON TOP OF THE HURDLES THEY ARE AFRAID TO TELL THE OTHER ONE HOW THE FEEL.I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH LOVE THE MAN HAS FOR THE WOMAN. YOU DO NOT SEE THAT A LOT IN LIFE. AND THE WOMAN SEEMS TO HAVE BAD LUCK WITH MEN. DO THEY GET TOGETHER? YOU WILL HAVE TO READ THIS GREAT BOOK TO FIND OUT!

I loved this book. Right from the start the characters were interesting and endearing. When talking about love, Levi said love is like air. "In all its different states, we still have to commit to breathing it in. And the moment we choose to stop breathing, we die. It's not the air that kills us, it's that we stop breathing. And the moment we choose to stop being committed to our marriages, that's when they die." Levi and Hope both survived failed marriages, and found each other. I love how Becky Doughty wrote their story, and how they finally had courage to trust each other in the end. A wonderful book full of Hope! I highly recommend this for everyone who loves a happy ending.

Services for the veterinarian usually came without payment, but in items. Just as well since she was getting rid of one husband, an ex of just a year. Meeting Levi, who had hopes of his wife returning. Hope in common for both, but their jobs was the barrier, she saved them, he didn’t, Can opposites attract and find a neutral ground. Good author, and another good story, to enjoy.

Exciting, read dreams are made of! Becky reveals in this book how impulsive decisions have painful consequences. While we know in real life that happy endings are not guaranteed, if we could only be cautious with life choices!Love how Levi and Hope finally gave the truth - hoping! Thanks, Becky, for another awesome read!

I appreciate knowing I can count on Ms. Doughty's books to be clean & wholesome, & I've been curious to find out about the relationships between the sisters in this series, since it was the relationships between the sisters in her Gustafson Girls series that really got me hooked on this author. Hope's story was quite different from Faith's, & was well worth reading. I'm looking forward to the next one!

When you want to give up, read Where There is Hope by Becky Doughty. A farming community keeps the Vet very busy. Payment is made but not always in cash. Hope has many obstacles to overcome including ditching the EX. Life finds its way of righting itself, but one must have Hope to get through Life.

Review

“A wonderful, balanced, and accurate account of the search for the oldest human ancestors and the personages involved in this quest. Gibbons provides a revealing window into the house of horrors that can be human origins research.”—Science“Thrilling.... Gibbons [writes] with great flair.” —Entertainment Weekly“An entertaining, richly detailed story, told with clarity and a commanding grasp of the complexities of human origins.”—The Plain Dealer“Colorful and readable. . . . Like a detective story that puts Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, V.I. Warshawski, Easy Rawlins and Gil Grissom all in the same room, gives them a handful of clues, and lets them argue endlessly about the solution. Science writing is rarely this entertaining.”—San Jose Mercury News

I found this to be a very interesting history of the paleoanthropological adventures of the men and women who toiled countless hours, days, months, and years digging for remains of human ancestors in the quest to find human origins. It is quite a tale. Ann Gibbons did a fantastic job of delineating the history of the search for our earliest ancestors. She also did not leave out all the conflicts that occurred between the various groups in their competitive quest to secure fossil sites. I think you will find some of the events described unexpected. If you have any interest in this subject at all, you will not find this book boring.I like what Gibbons did in the beginning of the book. First we have a map of Africa with the locations of the main fossil sites listed. Following this is a chart indicating the year, discoverer, scientific name, nickname, approximate age, location, and significance of the important fossil finds. This chart includes findings from 1891 to the present. After this, is a human family phylogenetic diagram showing the connections between the different species. Finally, there is a section called The Fossil Hunters, which lists the names of most of the people discussed in the book along with some information about them. I found this introductory information very valuable when reading the book, and I referred back to it frequently. Whenever someone new was introduced, I could just flip to the front of the book and see who they were and what their accomplishments were. Whenever a new species was discovered such as O. tugenensis or Millennium Man, I could simply refer to the front section of the book and learn about its place in history.Overall this is a well written book about the search for human origins. I highly recommend it.

Anne Gibbon's book covers the competitive, combative, political and sometimes nasty relationships as well as many other not so nice characteristics that come with being human even in the honorable pursuit of scientific discovery. She chronicles the discoveries from the original Leakey's to the Toumai skull and teeth found by Michael Brunet in 2002. There were two other finds in the previous ten years that can claim the title of earliest member of the Human Family. The lack of absolute title of "The First Human" is due to three problems : first is that a clear definition of the characteristics of belonging to the Human family is not clearly defined or agreed upon; secondly each find is a different part of the skeleton and of multiple individuals so any clear comparison is also impossible; and finally our innate human character to be open minded to our own beliefs and closed to all others. What's fascinating is that our (human) group dynamics is the same regardless of pursuit - This could be Barbarians of the Gate with the only difference that it takes place in the remote dry regions of Africa rather than the plush skyscrapers of Manhattan.

Ann Gibbons does a wonderful job pulling back the veil on the backbreaking, contentious, and often life-threatening work of paleoanthropologists. Delving deep into the politics of both the land and the infighting of the scientists she captures the passion for our human history that those working in this field must possess, and their hopes of finding that impossible find: a new hominid species. Tim White's publication of his find, Ardipithecus ramidus, in 2009, really began back in 1994 with the discovery of a fossil so delicate and fragile it took over a decade to fully excavate and restore it. This book really emphasizes how difficult this field is and the hardships these scientists go through to flesh out the story of our ancestry. What this book is NOT is a direct recounting of human evolution, rather it is the story of the scientists and the refining of the scientific process itself, which is still a fascinating and wonderful read. It should give those who are not directly involved in science a better appreciation for the sacrifices that scientists make in order to bring an ever greater understanding of ourselves and the universe in which we reside. And I have to say, as a scientist myself, I am blown away by just how dangerous and deadly the work of paleoanthropologists can be. These guys are hardcore!

Ann Gibbons has given us a well-written presentation of the dubious doings of some of the big names in modern anthropology, shown in their efforts to out-do one another in the race to discover (and exploit) the fossils of man's oldest ancestors. Gibbons unhesitatingly shows the sometimes not-so-nice side of these scientists, with their claim-jumping, allegations of theft, and attempts to knock their rivals down a notch at any cost, in an all-too human game. A highly-recommended read.

The book talks more about the people that dmade the discoveries than the discoveries itself..

This author has a very keen perception and understanding of how archeologists work and think. In particular, as it applies to human evolutionary discoveries, she gives the reader such an in-depth understanding of how present-day humans look for their own ancestry with an intensity that gives her story a real-life picture of how it all developed. This intensely human aspect supported by the true science of discovery makes this book a real pleasure to read. Her research on the subject must be incredible and is obviously very professional.
