This is an amazing book that is rich in detail and description, with an interesting plotline that drives the book forward. All of the characters are extremely well-developed and the reader can easily empathize with the main character as she struggles to fit in in her rich suburban neighborhood in New Jersey while at the same time trying to stand out in the colorful Philadelphia art world. The best part of this book is the picture that the author paints of both worlds, that allows the reader to visualize the scenes in vivid detail. I would highly recommend this book to any teenage reader from ages 13-20.

I got this book on my Kindle and I was reading it so much the battery died!!!! Lol but it was awesome. I didn't expect to like it this much honestly. i'm in the stage where I'm moving from "kids books" to "teen books" (its a hard stage!!!!!!) and this book was perfect. I haven't read A Little Friendly Advice or The List but I plan to. The author has a cool way of writing. She's descriptive, but not overly descriptive. She's straight-forward. I can really see inside Emily (the main character's) brain. There's nothing too inappropriate in here. it has some romance but really what teen book doesn't?? There's a few bad words, but only about five or six. That's the only part I didn't like, the bad words. The characters used them for no reason at all! Well, I guess that's teenagers for ya. But otherwise it is completely appropriate and I totally love it! I'd recommend it to anyone 12+.

Siobhan Vivian's characters have a depth, which makes Same Difference truly engaging. The story line is relatable, yet offbeat enough that it doesn't mirror every high school girl in America's life. Emily is torn between who she thinks she wants to be - a popular high school girl who hangs out with the right crowd and fits in - and the person she truly is - an artist with a unique perspective on life as well as art. She struggles with and resists the opportunity to evolve, both as a person and as an artist. What makes the story interesting is the rich characters that Vivian creates. They are likable, flaws and all. They are so well developed that even once the book is back on the shelf, you find yourself wondering what has happened to them. I highly recommend Same Difference.

She loved the first book that she read from this author so i figured I would get more of the books. She cant seem to put it down. Good stuff for her.

good read for my 13 yr old granddaughter

Recommend thus to teens, anyone who likes David Levithan. Good story about finding and understanding yourself and others. Creative and realistic.

Love this book now and forever

It had a good moral of being your self and finding out who you are on the inside who you really are

Alice and Brian are next door neighbors and were junior high bff's...then he decided that being popular was more important then their friendship! Now Seniors in high school, he's the popular "King Jock" and she's a theater geek and while they are still neighbors, they haven't spoken to each other since junior high school! Now they are forced to work together on a regular basis because he gets the lead male role in their school play, and Alice despises him even more for it! Can they rekindle their friendship when he helps her out of a jam or is their friendship too far damage to be mended? This is a great read for YA's!

I have been looking for this exact type of story for a very long time.I am a high schooler of the 80s with "Sixteen Candles" still being one of my favorite films. I also watched a soap opera in 1983 where the popular guy fell for the shy and lonely girl.I like how Alice and Brian had been such close friends growing up until that dreadful period of life called junior high hit. One of the two best friends starts going up the popularity social ladder leaving his once buddy behind and alone.I never was in the "in" group even during my elementary years but my best friend was. She found herself left behind. It really hurt her emotionally to the point that her mother made her see a counselor.Alice lost Brian as he moved up the social ladder leaving her on her own. By the time both hit high school, Alice has hidden herself so well that classmates whom they grew up with since elementary have even forgotten she even exists. The novella does not go into a huge amount of angst back and forth. I find that aspect very refreshing. Ms Dallen states the facts and weaves a story of how once childhood friends can return to each other in friendship and much more.Highly recommend!

A sweet, friends-to-enemies-to-sweethearts story. I liked how both of the main characters secretly regretted how their friendship had ended but realized that they’d both played a part in it. It wasn’t only one of their faults, like one of them thought. I also liked how they came to realize this and admitted their role, and how they could change it. I also liked how they both supported the other when stepping out of their comfort zones. Even though the story was predictable, it was well-written and the author didn’t fall back on the cliches so many YA books do; there were no mean girl revenge plots, or mean guys playing pranks. It was just a sweet romance between two people who’d grown up together, along with most of the kids around them.

What started out as a kind of sad book about lost friendship turned out to be a very cute and fun book about rediscovering your best friend - and knowing he is really just as awesome a person as you always knew he could be. Come along with Alice and Bryan as they remember all the best things about each other while they write a brand new future together. You’ll remember your own high school romance and relive that first kiss, your first love, and hope that Alice and Bryan make it.

I really appreciated how the characters motivations made sense, and how each step along their path was rooted in who they were and how they saw the world. Several of the best friend turned enemies turned romantic relationship stories just don't make sense. This split felt real and that it was something they had to deal with. ...Though it felt too short.

I seldom read YA books I’m so far beyond being in the focus age group I need a passport to enter that country. However, I have read read and enjoyed other books by the author soI decided to give it a try. I’m really glad I did because the story is filled with great characters and humor. Very enjoyable and recommended.

Another great read by Maggie Dallen! First they were friends now they are enemies but one lie and one kiss could quickly changes all that the theater geek and the jock king another great read you don’t want to miss.

A wonderful friends to enemy to discovering their true feelings story with lots of getting to know about themselves along the way.

Seven Days in the Art World, by Sarah Thornton

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. The hot, hip contemporary art world, argues sociologist Thornton, is a cluster of intermingling subcultures unified by the belief, whether genuine or feigned, that nothing is more important than the art itself. It is a conviction, she asserts, that has transformed contemporary art into a kind of alternative religion for atheists. Thornton, a contributor to Artforum.com and the New Yorker, presents an astute and often entertaining ethnography of this status-driven world. Each of the seven chapters is a keenly observed profile of that world's highest echelons: a Christie's auction, a crit session at the California Institute of the Arts and the Art Basel art fair. The chapter on auctions (where one auction-goer explains, [I]t's dangerous to wear Prada.... You might get caught in the same outfit as three members of Christie's staff) is one of the book's strongest; the author's conversations about the role of the art critic with Artforum editor-in-chief Tim Griffin and the New Yorker's Peter Schjeldahl are edifying. Thornton offers an elegant, evocative, sardonic view into some of the art world's most prestigious institutions. 8 illus. (Nov.) From Booklist

*Starred Review* Art and business, personal quests and personality cults, big bucks and the triumph of concept over beauty, being cool and in the know—these are the cardinal points in the contemporary art world. Enter Thornton, an art historian and sociologist with moxie and a brilliant game plan. Willing to ask obvious questions, she infiltrates the seven circles of this competitive realm. An astute observer and stimulating storyteller whose crisp sentences convey a wealth of information, Thornton marvels at the military precision of a Christie’s auction and the wild improvisation of an art-school critique. On to Art Basel, a major international art fair where the “hard buy” rather than the hard sell is the rule since an artist’s reputation is tied to those who own his or her work. Thornton witnesses the final stage in the judging and presentation of the Turner Prize, watches editors at work at Artforum, attends the coveted Venice Biennale, and spends a dizzying day with the wizardly artist-entrepreneur Takashi Murakami. Thornton’s uniquely clarifying dispatches from the art front glimmer with high-definition profiles of artists, dealers, critics, and collectors, and grapple with the paradoxes inherent in the transformation of creativity into commodity. --Donna Seaman

This book helps us understand how confused the elitist tendencies of the art establishment have made the world of art. But it is also misleading - because the topic is NOT the "Art World". Ms. Thornton covers only that segment of art that she enjoys - then claims it’s exceptionally important. She also fails to be a neutral writer or ethnographer. This book is not ethnography. Ethnography involves a disinterested observer (or observer with a pre-existing opinion taking an intentionally neutral position) and going into an environment with people to study their interactions. First, and foremost, to be valid ethnography it requires that the writer describe how the specific population segment they study relates to other populations. It’s also not ethnography in that it’s mostly record of interviews - interviews that don’t add much. That it’s reporting isn’t surprising - her career has been spent reporting. But the claim to be much more is specious.Ms. Thornton does admit in her afterword to the later edition to being an enthusiast for contemporary art - and seems incapable of understanding or explaining where contemporaray fits up against a much, much larger world of art and set of artists. (I suppose it was a great sales tactic though for hyping up the book and getting it bought by a publisher.)She also fails to sort out how to observe neutrally - no matter her opinion. Many of the characters she’s with assume persona’s of "edgy" while truly being pretty mundane - a fact she misses. She also fails to see (apparently) that they are rehashing essentially the same things that have been made for nearly 70 years...that little of the theories postulated by the collectors, critics, or artists are “new”.The writing covering the first two days is quite compelling and I enjoyed those parts (tho’ frustrated by her inability to be an ethnographer). The remaining 5 days were pretty dull writing - but I wanted to make sure I read through each of the events. I suppose her “studio visit” was most hilariously odd. It wasn’t a visit to a studio - but to a factory with the tour given by the CEO. Yet rather than search ethnographically to understand and give insight to this variation, she wholeheartedly embraces the CEO.As a last thought, she is fascinated by art that has the approval of this elite crowd - it’s the art she embraces. What strikes me is that she seems to lack the interest and enthusiasm for art that doesn’t have that approval - art which probes the depths of the human and expresses what’s essentially human. Certainly we could all argue about what makes something to be art and never resolve that question - because everyone answers the question differently. But this fact is what is so sadly missing from this book - the only important question in the true world of art.

This book was just okay...nothing terribly interesting about it. Overall, I enjoyed the chapter about the Christie's auction the most, as it seemed like a very entertaining "show". The chapter called "The Magazine" was so boring and esoteric that it was virtually unreadable. The rest of the chapters were alright, with a mix of interesting and mind-numbingly dull sections....(a bit how I feel going to a modern-art gallery itself). I did expect to learn more about the art world than I did in this book, so it ended up being fairly disappointing in that respect. The saddest aspect of all is that I had a suspicion confirmed...the art world at this level is controlled by the rich and elite, so it's just another big corporate business! (Just read the chapter about the "artist" Murakami and you'll see what I mean).

This book is an ethnography (the writer as participant/observer) about the art world. Its message about art as a commodity and the art scene as a performance piece in itself came as no surprise to me as my husband is an artist. At one time we lived in New York and he was represented by a New York Gallery. When you read this book you will understand why we moved back to Alaska. Being an artist in the art world is like wearing a sign on your back that says 'hit me' or else feeling like you're some kind of wind-up toy that must perform in a set way.The book is divided into seven chapters, each elucidating one specific aspect of the art world. These chapters are:The Auction - About a Christie's big-time auction in New YorkThe Crit - About an art criticism class at CalArtsThe Fair - The Basel Art Fair in SwitzerlandThe Prize - The in's and out's of the Turner prize, awarded by Britain's Tate MuseumThe Magazine - About Artforum, an art magazineThe Studio Visit - Takeshi Murakami's studio and his work as an artist and entrepreneurThe Biennale - The Venice Biennale (or Studio 54 revisited)The commodification of art along with the hierarchy of dealers, collectors, curators and artists is in place all along the art feeding chain. While it was no surprise to me, it edified the sad state of the affairs in the art world. This book was written during the economic and art boom so the situation has likely changed along with the expendable money available to hedge fund founders and the general public.I was amazed to find out that one can not just buy art. Dealers like to choose who they will sell art to - they want art to go to an A-list collector and often collectors get on line to buy a piece of art by a particular artist. Production often does not meet the needs of consumption. If you are interested in details of the art world, you might enjoy this book. If you're easily jaded or have a weak stomach, I'd skip it. It goes into all the gory details of every aspect of art, from the artist who produces the work on up (or is it down)

LOVED this book, could not put it down. I am an artist and bought this based upon the other reviews and I am glad I did. I learned more about the art world and how it works. This book is like an insider's view of how the art world works, how galleries work and what each player in the game does. Very good information that you can use to educate yourself about the art world game in order to become more successful.

Little Explorers: My Amazing Body, by Ruth Martin

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Filled with details, these lift-the-flap titles cover familiar territory: the human body and vehicles. These slightly oversize board books feature much more information written at a higher level than most offerings in this format ("Trolleys are powered by electricity from overhead wires all along the route."). My Amazing Body lets readers know that though we are all different, ultimately we have many similarities. The book devotes a spread to various questions ("Where Did I Come From?"; "Where Does My Food Go?"). On the Move uses a similar presentation, with a different set of vehicles ("Trains and Trolleys," "Trucks and Vans") for each spread. The cartoonish illustrations are detailed and for the most part realistic, though a bit dull. The design of Move is a little less busy than that of Body and the labeling more useful. The material here is fairly straightforward ("Your two eyes let you see what is happening around you.") and should interest readers, particularly On the Move. VERDICT Suitable additions.—Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City

This is an informative book, but I'm disappointed in two things. 1. The flaps are VERY easy to rip off. My 13 month old has already ruined several of them. I am putting it on a higher shelf until she's older, but I have a feeling that it still won't hold up to an older toddler. 2. Reproductive anatomy is mostly ignored. There's a section on pregnancy, but nothing on human genitals. They're a part of the body just like all the others and should be represented in a book like this! Otherwise, it's a good book for kids.

I have 4 kids ages 1,4, 10 & 15. I bought it mainly thinking it was only going to be of interest for the younger 2 but even my 10 year old is intrigued and my 15 yo is enjoys checking it out as well!! I'm ordering more from this company!!!I'm writing this review WITH NOO COMPENSATION from this company. Just a thrilled customer that can teach my children about their bodies wo BORING them!I'm just an avid amazon prime customer ; due to my 10 yo whom has a severe autoimmune disorder and can't go out and shop so AMAZON is my one stop shop, &&&& once again NO COMPENSATION given from Amazon just a satisfied consumer.

This little book is chock-full of information. I can see my students really enjoying reading each page together, lifting the flaps and having conversations about what they are reading. This book will be great for our human body unit in 3rd grade. I wasn't sure if it would be too young for 3rd grade. But I ordered it anyway thinking if it doesn't work for 3rd it will work for K & 1st. I do have an issue with the book, which is my pet peeve. There is a typo on the page "How do I see and hear?" Behind the flap of the tongue "flavor" is spelled incorrectly. It is listed twice. Once correctly as "flavour" which is a common spelling outside the U.S. But it is also listed as "flavurs". I did a little research to make sure this wasn't just a word spelled in a way that was unfamiliar to me. I did not find that as a correct spelling, Al though I did discover Flavur is a restaurant in Canada. As a librarian, I have a hard time adding this book to the school library because of this oversight. In the world of digital media it is so very common to see typos in digital print. It really bothers me to see a misspelled word in a print book. The content is so informative and the pictures are great. They are cartoon-like but descriptive and not at all babyish, so I will keep it in the collection. But I will cringe every time I check it out to a student hoping that they don't notice the misspelled word.

My amazing body-amazingly has no “potty parts”. What is that? We are just gonna pretend those parts don’t exist. I bought this to educate.

This is a great book. A ton of information presented at an age appropriate level (I got it for my 4.5 year old). One negative (being picky): on the page about pregnancy, it says that babies drink their mothers milk, which isn't always true. I don't have a good alternative for how they should explain it and I personally wasn't offended by it, just something to note if you're sensitive to the topic.A positive/negative: there is no discussion of the differences between boys and girls in this book. I'm using this as a starting point for the discussion with my daughter and using other books to elaborate, but just something to be aware of.

My 4-year-old daughter has had so many questions recently about how our bodies work. I was having a hard time answering them in an age appropriate way. I ordered her this book and she absolutely loves it. She just got it yesterday and I can't even tell you how many times we've read it. This is a great book to help explain human anatomy to kids.

This is one of my 2.5 year olds favorite books. She is always asking for her "body book". I wasn't sure if she was too young for it because it is a bit wordy although the flaps do keep it more interesting for little ones. She LOVES it. She will open the flap and say "Read!" and wants me to read every word on the pages. She has learned so much about her body from this book and it's very G rated, even the part about the baby in the mommy's womb is very age appropriate for her. I appreciate it doesn't have any mention of genitalia, etc in it as that would not make me happy to talk about with her at this age.

This is a fantastic little book with lots of flaps to lift. The flaps are great for younger siblings, while older ones can enjoy the information inside! The only reason it's missing one star is that I would expect a book on the body to cover all body parts, and this one doesn't. No need to shy away from these things!

Big help with the article I'm writing about the F40. One of the few books that gets the history of the development right.

I love this book, and first picked it up when it came out back in 1994. It covers the evolution of the 288 GTO, 288 GTO EVO (which is the missing link between the GTO & F40) and F40. Has tons of close up photos of all parts & details of the three cars. The F40 is my favorite supercar of all time, so I may be slightly biased, but it is a great pictoral history of the 3 cars and shows the 288GTO evo & F40 together on a track! How cool is that!!??
