Dr. Schut's book is an excellent one that I can easily say that when I got to the end, I was rather surprised. I hadn't been keeping that much track. This is the kind of book I wish I had had when I was in high school and dealing with issues of doubt and such. I have seen enough damage done by people who are critical of the medium of video games but have not engaged with it.For my part, I am going to turn 37 later this year and yet I still consider myself a gamer. My favorite kinds of games are RPGs. I am still bothered that I have not got to play Breath of the Wild. Final Fantasy is another favorite series of mine and it's my wife's hope that somehow we can save up enough money or find someone generous so that we can get a Nintendo Switch so she can play the new Pokemon games.Like me, Schut is also a gamer. He has seriously wrestled with the arguments on both sides. His favorite games seem to be ones like Red Dead Redemption and Civilization. He also does not deny at all that he is thoroughly committed to Jesus. So what does he say about the games?Schut does say we need to listen to criticisms. Take time to pay attention to what is being said. At the same time, we should be hoping for critical evaluation and not self-righteous evaluation. Also, we are living in an age where games are more and more common, including games on our IPhones and Kindles and such. Many people who would likely never play a video game have no problem playing something like Words With Friends for instance. There's also games that are popular such as Candy Crush which has now become a gameshow, and Angry Birds, which has had its own movie. He also speaks out against our attempts to Christianize everything. Something is not automatically Christian because it mentions Jesus. Many of us would say the Chronicles of Narnia are Christian, which indeed they are, but you will not find Jesus explicitly mentioned anywhere in them. Our Christian material is usually preachy and we're very good at reaching ourselves, but not everyone else.We also have to pay attention to what kind of medium a video game is. One noted difference is that it is interactive. No matter how many times you read The Lord of the Rings nothing new will happen. The story will be the same. No matter how many times you watch the movie, nothing new will happen. Every time you play the game, something different will happen. Of course, there can often be some overriding parameters set for you by the designers of the game, but you have great freedom and influence on the story. No two playings will be the same.He also does get into the topic of a demonic scare. I was pleased to hear like me, he had a great interest in Dungeons and Dragons as well as Magic: The Gathering. For me, in high school, my friends and I didn't care for the school lunch at all, so rather than have lunch, we'd go to the library and play Magic all afternoon together.Unfortunately, too many people have brought into scare stories about such things. Consider the Pulling Report for instance. People who latch onto this do a disservice to those who play the games. Most people who are playing these games are for the most part the same as any other interest. It's sadly the few that no doubt have other issues going on beforehand that are emphasized. This naturally gets us into the question of violence in video games. Schut doesn't shy away from this one, though he does say each person needs to evaluate this for themselves as well. It could be that part of our world is we live in a fallen world and sometimes violence could be what needs to be done. One aspect of this I was considering is that if I'm playing a game like Final Fantasy, one could consider reasoning with a human being, but if a hungry carnivorous creature is coming after me, reason will not work.Another issue is game addiction. Games do have a tendency to draw us in, reward our achievements, and make us want to do more. There will be a little bit more on this later, but let's discuss how it relates to addiction. Can some people get addicted? Yes. Still, there is no proven condition like this. Many people do learn to manage their time well. The question is not what do you do, but what do you not do? He also says a temporary obsession is okay. When Breath of the Wild came out, many of my friends were indeed engrossed in that for awhile. (And I hate them for it in a loving Christian way.)What about sexuality in video games? It is only in the world of video games that a woman can go into battle wearing pretty much a bikini and count that as armor. Video games are usually a world dominated by men, but there are plenty of female gamers. (My wife is playing Pokemon as we speak.) The representation on the other hand can be quite different. Women are usually eye candy. There are some exceptions, such as Samus Aran, but we only need think of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider and the obsession with some people on finding a nude code for her.Now to what I said there would be more on later when talking about addiction. What about education? Video games could be a great source of education. For instance, when I studied Greek in Bible College, we used a program called Parson's Greek Tutor. I would like very much to get my hands on this again as the interactive format made it much easier for me to learn the material and at the time, I was moving ahead of the class even. Every round was a game and I wanted to get perfect and would settle for nothing less which made sure I learned the material very well. As one working on learning the language now, I look back and wish I still had that.Video games can be used in such a way for us today. There is something real in the concept of edutainment. Ask a gamer about the information they need in a game and many times they will know it because they have to know it to play well. It is practical knowledge for them. But what about concerns about the digital age killing our minds? To some extent, this is true. To another extent, the digital age is here to stay and we have to do the most with it that we can. Every new medium brings with it changes. The print medium brought changes as does the internet medium and the video game medium. It's easy to strike at the medium instead of the human sinful tendency.Schut also has a section on Christians in the video game industry. Many of these are dedicated people and want to do the best they can. They see their work as an act of service to God in trying to make the best game possible. There are few explicitly Christian video games, and this could be a good thing as sadly, many of those are just awful and only reach those of us who are already Christians. Abandoning the industry will only do for that what it does for Hollywood. We need Christians in every field being salt and light. No discussion would be complete without the social aspects. I remember years ago getting together with my brother-in-law and some of his friends. No doubt, I was the youngest one there, but we spent all of one afternoon playing Goldeneye together. In Charlotte, I would get together with some friends every Sunday night. After some time playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl we would go bowling. When it came time for my bachelor party, all we did was bring the Wii over to a guy's apartment complex who had a big screen and played Smash Brothers all night long together.Games have had a way of bringing people together and uniting them. Gaming conventions are places where people can very often be themselves and form friendships easily. It could be that the gamer today is no longer the single guy sitting in his mother's basement. If you're a gamer, you owe it to yourself to read Schut's book. It is a gripping looking at a neglected medium and one that we need more of. I appreciate that he sent me a copy for review purposes and I look very much forward to interviewing him on my podcast about this.In Christ,Nick PetersDeeper Waters Apologetics

For those new to critical writing about the medium of video games, Kevin Schut's book provides a very nice introduction that any adult reader will find accessible. He recognizes the challenge of writing about video games for both outsiders, avid gamers, and everyone in between, and he strikes a good balance throughout. As someone who plays a lot of video games and tends to stay up to date on the games industry there were very few times I felt Dr. Shut "dumbing down" for the sake of those who don't know games as well. Rather, I was often surprised and pleased with his thoughtful and fair discussion of the issues of violence, game addiction, fantasy and "escape", and the purposes of video games and those who make them. I was confronted with some new ideas from time to time, but more often I came face to face with ideas I as a Christian gamer consider often, but never had never seen so eloquently stated, deeply-explored, or well-supported as in this book. For Christians who love video games this book is an important one, but a lot of the most valuable insights for me would likely be valuable for people of any faith persuasion. His concise summary of the state of the games industry and the ways it is changing in chapter 8 is one example. Another that comes to mind is his treatment of the important question: What do my actions in video games mean for me in real life? This book was entertaining as well as educational, and it brought me as a Christian gamer to a deeper appreciation for the medium I love, reminded me why games move me, and how asked me to consider how I can better follow Christ in my own life.

Perhaps a book written by a Christian about games, but hardly any scripture used at all in light of Schut's views. Already states in the preface that he will lean towards being for gaming, rather than the argument against. Understandable and made okay cases. However, a lot of what was said about God and relationship, etc, was very skeptical and a little skewed to me. I am someone who enjoys games once in a blue moon if I'm bored, but honestly, this book did not really help enlighten such ideas of games being good, especially if you are a follower of Christ in His fullness.I wouldn't really recommend. Maybe buy a used one, but it didn't give much insight if you're a gamer or play games. Doesn't give good theological evidence. At all. Just more info. Okay book.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about how games are an effective media, from the Christian perspective. I was super excited when I got this book, and I carry it with me everywhere because it is such a good read. This book is worth every penny! I love that he covers Christian games as well as secular games. I also liked that this book just came out this year, so the information is very current. From reading some of the other reviews before I bought it, I knew that he was very careful to be balanced, which is great, but I was also glad to see that he gives his opinion as well as sharing both sides of information so that you can make your own decision. There is a lot of solid information in this book, and I know it will be a great reference for me to have forever!

Chaos: Making a New Science by James Gleick is the story of how chaos theory was popularized in different fields of study. In Chaos, Gleick looks at how the science of chaos was developed. It's pretty interesting to follow how researchers in different fields somehow discovers how the theory is not as it seems. How simple systems are not just simple systems but can evolve into complex systems. And how these researchers through their curiosity and open-mindedness were able to see that perhaps there's a new paradigm and a new theory to be discovered.Unfortunately I don't think this book is very well written. The purpose and point of the book is quite hard to see. Does Gleick want to tell us about chaos? In that case the explanations are few and far between and when an explanation of chaos is attempted, it doesn't quite adequately explain it. Perhaps this is more to tell the human side of chaos? How recognition might not always come but the pursuit of truth is more important. In this case I am unconvinced as the structure doesn't allow that to come across. The book seems to be more about individuals and looks to be split up into small autobiographies. Finishing this book, I'm not really sure what it was I was supposed to get out of it. The most interesting point for me was how Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions was exemplified but other than this I don't feel like I got anything else out of the book. This is then not a book about chaos theory. It's more a collection of stories of the people who helped bring about chaos theory and their struggles in doing so.

This book describes the beginnings of an important theory that explains many patterns and behaviors observed in nature that are not usually discussed in traditional science classes even to this day. It's not an easy read but the book's content is well worth the effort especially to those interested in science and how nature "works".I believe this book will be most rewarding to readers with knowledge of science at high-school & college levels, in particular readers that understand how equations/math are used in sciences to describe and predict the behavior of various systems/objects.3-stars for the prose. Gleick's writing doesn't flow and is often hard to follow. I can't say it was enjoyable read, most of the time I felt that I had to "extract" what he is trying to say by rereading certain sections.5-stars for the content, breadth, and depth. Gleick casts a wide net in describing how pieces of Chaos theory emerged from several scientific fields. He did a phenomenal job in researching the topic and immersing himself in technical details.Several keywords to take away from this book are : Chaotic systems, Fractals and Self-Similar patterns, Butterfly effect, Nonlinear systems,Dynamic systems, Bifurcating systems, Attractor. One example of how fractals appear in landscapes: [...].Chaos theory spawned several new subfields broadly can be labelled as Emergent Complexity.

This book was not bad and it tought me a thing or two, but I would have liked more math. It's 75% about 'the who's who on campus', I mean the history of scientists and their discoveries.

Very readable introduction to the field, an excellent popular account. I had read Mandelbrodt's classic on fractals when it appeared, but had not followed on developments. In this book, I liked the story-telling and didactic explanations. Should be a nice gift for youngsters interested in math or physics. A bit more explicit math would have been helpful; sometimes the author bends over backwards to avoid even simple formulae or equations, which might have been easier to understand for readers with college math than verbal explanations.I got interested and probably will follow on with more advanced material. The book may be a bit dated now, but not being an expert, I find it hard to point out specific items that should be added or updated. I am sure that a lot of things have happened after the book was published. I would also have appreciated a longer list of citations of the original publications.

an amaizng book. even for a non-science person like me, it was a great read. glecik has made the language so simple that i found each and every page interesting and understandable. this rates as one of the best books i have ever read in my iife. i have understood now the fact that most of the life we have lead or are leading, has to have a component of chaos in it, and it is alright not to fret over it.

Great read on the history of the emerging field of chaos theory as a loose multi-disciplinary field applicable to almost every discipline and yet adopted by no discipline as its own. The pioneers are as varied, free-thinking, maverick, and ostracized as the discipline itself. Approach this book from the standpoint of 'history of chaos science' rather than 'technical introduction to chaos theory,' as the work doesn't quite take upon itself to teach the reader the rigorous field of chaos theory even at an introductory level. It is a book for the lover of science for science sake and a qualitative introduction to chaos at that.

Even science converges in a chaotic way, nay? Well, here we have a bunch of mavericks creating a new branch of science; the struggle to ignite a paradigm shift is everywhere in this book. They saw regular irregularities in deterministic systems (locally unpredictable but globally stable) and built the intuition and mathematical tools to understand it. The adventure includes several paradoxes together with infinite food for thought. For example, a fractal plots infinity within a finite plan. What? We can see infinity!

At twenty-three years of age Ramses becomes pharaoh but will it be a short reign? His brother, Shanaar, hasn't given up hope of being pharaoh and is poised to use the king's friends against him. But Shanaar isn't alone. People close to him want to weaken him and an outsider wants to challenge him with black magic. Ramses is young and inexperienced but seems to have the gods on his side. What is needed now is the power of the eternal temple. In Volume II of Christian Jacq's five-volume set The Eternal Temple brings to life the struggles of the young king to rule a divisive country. Seti I, who is seen as the gentle and wise ruler imparting his wisdom to his son, has died suddenly and now the young Ramses must steer a country alone with dark forces converging on him. Moses is beginning to hear God's call and questions the role of religion in Egyptian society. Yet he is loyal to Ramses, his boyhood friend. To make matters more difficult on Moses a stranger is encouraging him to accept Aton, the one true god. Now forces beyond Moses' control will force him to choose his own way. The Hittites are also stirring in Syria and the Nubians are rebelling. Ramses must be careful and he can't trust anyone. The Ramses set is very easy reading and Jacq's writing style is crisp and keeps the action moving. The exciting characters such as Moses, Homer, Menelaus and Helen of Troy make this period one of the most exciting in the ancient world.

Here's a book that both enthralls you and challenges your basic concepts. I found the relationship between Moses and Ramses II extremely fascinating, making me rethink some traditional teachings. Although a work of fiction, this series draws you in and keeps you wanting more. Just like canceling a tied game at halftime. My husband and I flipped a coin to see who would read it first. We ended up reading it together and look foward to moving onto the next one now! Definitely a book that can be read to and by anyone. My stepson is reading the first one now and has fallen in love with learning about Ancient Egyptian culture! No history teacher could have done better! Get them interested and let research and learning take over.

This is the second in a five part series that really manages to blend history and full-blown fiction. Jacq's Egypt comes alive and jumps off the page, stealing you away to a world where magic might just be real and all those dry history stores come to life. I was really surprised at who "the good guys" and "the bad guys" turned out to be, and found myself really feeling for the characters in the pages. I highly recommend reading the series in order - you might just catch yourself rereading it, like I did ... wow, I just realized how cheezy that all sounds, but they really are great books.

The novel might have been interesting when it was published. There is a lot of information that people might find redundant. No literary merits. You can give this one a pass.

This is a bit boring, at least the first half: a lot of clues about a lot of plots, randomly scattered down the pages, apparently without a leading line. The second half has a good pace, at least, still almost all the plots remain pending, I guess preparing for the next book.Just a pair of twists before the end of the story can't save this novel, I think it's a pair of steps below the first one.Read it in a rush, if you have the next novels on your bedside table already...

very enjoyable. carried on with a entertaining facts and story line of the first book.

But same plot as all other C Jacques novels

Recently returned from trip to Egypt. This book brings to life all of the temples I saw, especially the one at Abu Simbel with the giant statues of Ramses and Nefertiti. Highly recommended.

This was a very interesting read covering the extent the British were prepared to go to cover the loss of Khartoum some 10 years earlier. We follow the changes in weapons & equipment used up to the final conflicts in this saga where we see the use of trucks & aircraft.... What is the saddest fact is the way the Anglo-Egyptian forces controlled the individual battles with the machine gun & cannon YET some 15 to 18 years later the same tools of war had devastating effects on the British & Empire forces SO what did they learn from this campaign regarding the uses of modern weapons?

Good overview of the campaign without being too brief. Wonderful read.

I don't usually post reviews, but I wanted to post a review for this study guide since I just took the CMA test this morning and passed and the information is still fresh in mind :) This book was my main study tool. I started out a couple of weeks ago by reading each chapter (there are 17) and doing the practice questions that followed. This book provides a comprehensive review of material as compared to other books. I also bought the CMA Exam Preparation Study guide (another review book on Amazon) and even though that book provided good information, it was definitely not as comprehensive as the Kaplan book. I did find that the majority of questions on the real exam were covered by information in Kaplan. If you spend time studying this book, you will do well. Just as an FYI- I was scoring in the 85% range on questions in this book. I did purchase the AAMA practice test on their website (I highly recommend you do this) and scored 95% on that test after studying Kaplan. I found the actual test to be very similar in difficulty level to the Kaplan questions- maybe slightly easier. I did also do the questions in the CMA Exam Preparation Study Guide book and found those to be much more difficult and not as indicative of questions on the actual test. The other recommendation I have is that you purchase the CMA Smart Exam Prep app. I used the app throughout the couple of weeks to answer questions (there are about 200) and found them to be excellent review. There were many questions on the actual test that were very similar. So I highly recommend you also get this app. In Summary, study the Kaplan book, do the practice test, do the AAMA practice test and answer the questions on the app and I think you will be prepared to pass the exam. Good luck!

This was the only review book I purchased for my 2018 AAMA examination, which I passed with a 98% on the first try. This was a great refresher tool for the many subjects we are expected to be knowledgeable in as entry level medical assistants. However, this book was just that: an overview. While I found it to be great at summarizing all the various body systems, I found it necessary to utilize my textbooks to more thoroughly review pharmacology, accounting, and lab procedures. I also found all the practice quizzes and exams included in this prep book to be extremely helpful.

I am prepping to take my CMA exam in May, and this book has been very helpful. The best part about this book is that once the answers are given at the end of each test, they give an explanation on WHY this is the answer. This has been a VERY useful tool in my prep.

I purchased this book after three weeks before I took the CMA exam! I took all of the practice test and the Big test in the back. I took the test this past Friday and passed! I love this book and would recommend it to anyone!! It’s very thorough and easy to understand.

Very help passing rmt exam got 86% using this alone. Great refresher being out of school for 15 years.

It's been over four years since I graduated from my medical assistant course. I purchased this book based on the extensive material within each section, general, administrative and clinical. This book covers everything on the test and more and I only had to study for three weeks prior to taking the test. It re freshed my memory and provided everything I needed to know. THANK YOU!! Buy this book if you want to pass about your AAMA certification test!

This book was great!I passed my exam after the 3rd try! Highly recommend, I found that most of the questions in the book were on the exam.

Has a lot of information review that you should know. I passed my exam.
