I am now on my second book of these postcards. So far, the recipients have really enjoyed them. (That's why I bought a second book.)The good: Some of the photographs are very funny. For example, one card shows a young couple with a baby (or toddler, I can't really tell). The parents are kissing the child, one on each cheek, and the child looks absolutely horrified. In another photograph, a young boy is grinning extremely widely, sporting a lovely 7-10-split grin. Both of these cards, I think, would bring a smile to just about anyone. The cards are also very sturdy, completely suitable for posting. They are thicker than commercial postcards of the sort you might buy on vacation, and they require only the postcard rate to mail. (At least I think they do. I used the postcard rate on every card in the first book, and all were delivered.) The back of each card is divided down the middle, and there is almost no text to interfere with a message. (There is a very small copyright notice running along the left side of the back of each card, but it's not obtrusive.)Now the not so good. Some of the photographs simply are not that funny, at least to me. For example, one card has a family of four standing in front of a "Welcome to South Dakota" sign, and the caption below the photograph reads, "It's the journey, not the destination." Now, it's possible that I simply miss what's funny in the photograph, but the best I can figure out is that the idea of going to South Dakota is supposed to be a joke in and of itself. Many of the photographs are funny simply because of the time when they were taken. For example, the Charged GBH shirt on the child in the photograph on the cover probably sets the picture in the 1980s, and I'm sure the boys at the time were proud of their look. It's probably a pretty good photograph to use to judge whether the book would appeal to you. There are others that depend pretty much entirely on whether the '80s were inherently funny. In short, it's a mixed bag, but based on the reports of those to whom I write, the mixture tilts decidedly toward funny.

Honestly, I love the idea of these postcards and after seeing similar ones I had high hopes for them. The quality was nice with strong card stock and good quality photos but the captions on more than half really fell short for us. It wouldn't have been worth taking a star away if they were never seen pictures but many of these have been used in other media and with different commentary so the bar ended up being higher. I thought they would be original photos.

These are hysterically funny. Have the whole book out on a coffee table and people pick it up and laugh out loud. Sent some out in the mail the last time I traveled. They are just a hoot. Will order more if this author comes up with another postcard book of these funny awkward photos.

A wonderful collection of postcards!!! I bought this book for my "Postcrossing Addiction" and loved it! The recipients of the postcards really enjoyed the images. Made of sturdy card stock with lots of room for writing your message AND the address of where it's going to! Cards are easily detachable! A great value for the price!

I enjoyed sending these postcards to my friends in prison to put a smile on their face and make them laugh. My friends loved them and even the correctional officers read them and laughed.

These are fun. I'm sending them to my family.

Using these for our wedding guest book for guests to sign and send to us after the wedding with wedding wishes. The postcards are on thick material which makes them easy to put apart from the binding.

Photos are hilarious, as always, but the jokes/comments printed are just not relevant to the photos. It really takes away from the hilarity of the photos, themselves.

Review

Praise for Down and Derby“As someone who has witnessed the many transitions of roller derby almost from the beginning, I can say that this chronicle isn’t just for fans of all the stages of the game, but for anyone who wants to enjoy an inspiring story about truly fascinating people.” —Jerry Seltzer, derby pioneer and owner of the original Roller Derby league“Fast, dirty, seductive, kooky, cunning, foxy, cheeky, wicked, crazy, bad arse and most importantly, no bullshit. These are the words that tumble from my mind to my fingers having read Down and Derby. Veterans in the world of roller derby, Axles and Kasey are an inspiration to derby girls everywhere, myself included. The Whip It Hurl Scouts couldn’t have done it without them. I can’t say enough about these women or this book. Game on!” —Zoë “Bloody Holly” Bell, stuntwoman and star of Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof “Roller derby is one of the most empowering and intriguing worlds I’ve ever come across. It’s amazing to encounter a sport where women get out there and do such extraordinary things. But derby is more than just a sport, it’s a sisterhood.” —Drew Barrymore“A rock’em sock’em history and how-to guide by two roller girls about the derby they love to death. Told in a no-BS style that makes you feel like an insider sharing a beer after the match. This is sparkly, terrific, and bad ass!” —John Doe of X“Feminism can come in the form of placards and protests, but Down and Derby proves that a girl’s liberation can also involve strapping on a pair of skates, taking on a kick-ass nickname, and throwing a few hip checks in the process.” —Marisa Meltzer, author of Girl Power“Part manifesto, part how-to-guide, Down and Derby demystifies the world of roller derby, showing readers it’s as inclusive as it is cool. After finishing this book, you no longer have an excuse for keeping your boring name or for never trying on a pair of skates. This is required reading for anyone who's searching for new ways to be fearless.” —Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney“Axles of Evil and Kasey Bomber are two of the most sincere, awesome, kick-ass women I’ve ever met. They are champions of roller derby—and not just in a flashy way but in a really smart way. Being able to have learned to skate under their wing has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Down and Derby is the next best thing to training with them personally. If you love derby this is the book you’ve been waiting for.” —Ellen Page, star of Whip It“As the author of an old Roller Derby book, let me just say this to the new kid on the rink: up with Down and Derby. Whether you’re already a Derby doll or a doll wannabe it’s required reading.” —Frank Deford, , author of Five Strides On The Banked Track

An absolutely necessary, fun, well-written, and especially encouraging book on starting, learning more about, supporting and playing roller derby! It encourages me so much as a cadet and I very often refer to this book for help on derby rules, supporting the team, and just delving more into the sport you wish to learn more about or one you choose to pursue!A must-by and a very good introduction book for anyone curious or even a vet.

Inspiring book for any new derby girl and loads of info on the history of derby and start of modern derby for any roller derby enthusiast!

I have been in Roller Derby for just under a year and so many of the comment, interviews etc in this book just made me smile (and maybe get nearly teary) as this book is so perfectly real.I loved the interviews and while I knew most of the history already, this is a great book for anyone in derby or just interested in derby. You should buy this book... and I dont tell people that very often.

A little cheesy at times, but overall it was a decent read.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my best friend last Christmas because she was part of a roller derby team. She LOVED her book!!! She said she could not put it down and finished it within the week. She even let her sister read it, and she fell in love with it too! I haven't read it but since they loved it so much, I decided to give it 5 stars!

Down and Derby is comprehensive narrative of the sport -- its rules, history, cultural impact, personalities and evolution -- written in an intelligent and light style. Every Saturday for the last two months, I've started my day with a few chapters. Now that it's done, I'm looking for my next off-the-track derby fix, but I know I'll regularly cracking this one open for tips, anecdotes and as a reference source.

I thought this was very well done. It is a great tool for anyone from the expert all the way down to the casual fan. It gives a great perspective for those thinking about joining derby at every level and in every area. It also gives a good idea of what those involved have to go through to put on the bouts for the fans. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone.

This is a great history of derby with some "do's" and "don'ts" about getting involved in derby. It reads a little like a sports history written by a player as opposed to a writer, but it's still readable and well edited.

#338,933 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I read the 2nd in the series through my local library, and enjoyed it so much that I purchased the rest of the series. This book is the first in the series, and it is about a group of young girls who attend and live at an old ballet academy where strange things happen. In this particular one, the girls start getting their stuff stolen from their rooms and they decide to solve the mystery of who is behind all of it. The ending was pretty far fetched and a little strange, definitely went in a different direction than I was expecting. I did not enjoy it as much as the other book but it was still a quick, fun read.

The climax and resolution were not compatible. The story needed at least 25-50 pages more to do character development, conflict development and a satisfying resolution. BORING!

This starts with a mean girls vibe, and it looks like it may just play itself out as a "scholarship-student-tormented-by-the-less-talented-rich-girls" drama set in a ritzy ballet school. Wrong. That gets turned around very quickly and the book morphs into a "school-girl-besties-chase-the-ghost" romp that's just right for a middle grader who likes a little bit of creepiness with her girlfriend bonding. No plot spoilers here. Anyway, the plot hardly matters. It starts as a mystery and takes a sharp turn into "eeevil", but it's evil the way "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" was evil. That's O.K. by me; how creepy do you want your middle graders' books to be?What we do get is a nice cast of BFF's. Madeleine is the super talented ballet student who is a new scholarship student at a prestigious residential ballet school. Right off the bat she crosses Ophelia, the reigning prima donna. Ophelia has a sidekick who is pretty independent, and there are two twins who are secondary sidekicks. Madeleine proves her mettle in a skirmish with the head mistress, and the fearless five are formed. Now, I'm being a bit of a wiseguy, but actually it is very nice and entertaining to have a book where the new girl is nervous, has a bumpy start, shows the right stuff, and forms a bond with some people who will be her real friends. I know that's a little out of fashion, currently, in middle grade books, but I'm happy to find it when I can. It helps that all of the girls have a sense of humor, a little vinegar, and engage in good-natured and rather clever banter. So, it's cheerful, high energy, deeply implausible, and zips right along. A nice middle grade find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Madeleine's mother had made a lot of sacrifices to get her into the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance, the "most prestigious ballet school in the country." She had that scholarship and that was going to be a big help. Dario was kind of a creepy looking place and Madeleine was definitely going to be homesick. It was going to be more difficult because instead of being by far the best dancer at her old school, they all were here. Madame Puant would be the instructor, but soon trouble would erupt. Madeleine touched her "mother's antique gold necklace" for comfort, but she'd need a lot more than that soon.It wasn't long before one of the girls was giving her the stink eye and pummeling her with criticism. "I told you not to crowd me, you freak." Making friends would be pretty difficult for Madeleine at Dario, but making enemies seemed easy. That aside, everything about the place was weird and gave her the chills. "Something was wrong," she thought to herself, the house had a touch of evil in it somewhere. Madeleine was shocked when she found someone had actually stolen her necklace from her room. It had to be that nasty bully, Ophelia, or was it?There was a "thief at Dario," but whomever it was, it wasn't of the human kind. All the girls were missing sentimental items, including Ophelia. "I think it's the house itself. I think we are dealing with a ghost." Perhaps Ophelia was right. Emma and Sophie, the twins, and Kayley were ready to join Ophelia and Madeleine in the search for answers. They were going to head into the tunnels underneath the school. "The smell of mold, mildew and graves crept into Madeline's nose," but there was something or someone else down there. Their midnight search was about to uncover evil lurking beneath the school, but could they face it?This is a creepy new tale at the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance young readers will love. This tale, of course, has just the right amount of fear factor to keep readers turning those pages. The book is perfect for confident or reluctant readers who are just embarking on a quest for the eerie and unusual. The characters and plot are not particularly well-developed, but will definitely encourage a move into the next in the series, Stolen Luck, to find out what goes on in that creepy academy. The new kid on the block, the bully, the quest for friendship, rivalries, and the ghostly unknown will be of high interest to some readers. It's a quick, fun read for young readers.THE DARIO QUINCY ACADEMY OF DANCE:#1 Leaping at Shadows#2 Stolen Luck#3 The Cursed Ballet#4 Twin DangersThis book courtesy of the publisher.
