This version of this book should not be on the list of greatiest religious books!Initially i was excited to find this text. Upon purchasing the book i discovered, from the authors introductory essays, an obvious lack of belief(even a hint of distaste) in the religion itself expressed by the author. Imagine an abject islamic scholar translating the torah. I would not trust the translations for the lack of heart behind the work. Try other more rare translations, perhaps The Holy Granth: Sri Guru Granth Sahib Vol. 1 thru 4 by ~ Kartar Singh DuggalThank you

i was born into a catholic based family. im a 21 yr old male mexican in hollywood. i found god through sikhism.sikhism changed my life.this book changed my life.-rrm

I have been looking for this book in local book stores, and have not been successful. Was great to find it here and at a really good price as well.

Good I like it

wonderful sacred text.

The Adi Granth is the Holy Book of the Sikhs. I must admit, it is a beautiful piece of poetry. I am a Christian and while I do not believe these scriptures are divinely inspired, they are inspired through a very beautiful form of creativity. I do appreciate it.

This is is not accepted as true translation by all the Sikh Scholars, any one who wants to read Granth Sahib in English should refer to the translation by Michael MacAuliffe, which is the most accurate translation ever attempted and took close to a decade to translate. This was also fully reviewed by Giani Pratap Singh and others. Other accepted translation by Indian Authors is also available (On Siknet, http://www.sikhnet.com/GuruTranslation and SikhBookClub, http://sikhbookclub.com/books/guru-granth-sahib-steek-english/1656/2903) Ernest Trump's attempt was considered the most damaging translation by often misinterpretation of real meaning as mentioned by others at this forum. Infact I would request Amazon to take this book off the shelf because of its not an acceptable translation. Here are comparison of English translation by Sikh Scholars:http://www.sikhnet.com/pages/siri-guru-granth-sahib-english-translation-comparison

I am a Sikh, and, as noted by others, this is a terrible translation of our holy scripture. I was torn between giving this a rating of 1 because of the terrible translation, or a 5 for it being at least somewhat of a representation of our holy scripture. I eventually decided to give it a 1 because lisa jones gave it a 5 for the same reason I would have, and because this is such a bad translation that I'm not so sure it is a good representation of our Sikh Philosophy, as I will describe. This traslation was done by a man, Trumpp, who, historically, had an unfavorable view of Sikhs. His goal, as noted in various historical references, was to engender the idea that Sikhism is just another sect of Hinduism and the Guru Granth is just another Hindu scripture. This is quite wrong so I would like to give you an example of how bad the translation is, and how Trumpp was trying to achieve his goal. To do so, you need go no further than the very first two words on the very first page. The Sikh scripture starts with the words "Ek Oankar." In this edition, Trumpp translates this as "Om." However, this is only one third of the complete translation. Here is how Ek Oankar should be translated: Ek is literally the numeral 1, ie One God. This is the most important belief in Sikhism, and what makes it drastically different than Hinduism's polytheism. The second word, "Oankar," can also be transliterated as "Omkar." To translate this word you need to break it down into its two parts; "Om" and "kar." The first part; Om has three syllables A-U-M. In Hindu philosophy each of these syllables represents one of the Hindu manifestations of God; Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu. The Second part; "kar" is the verb "To Do/Make." So Oankar means, in a very rough translation, "To make Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu." Now, when combined with the first word we get, also a rough translation: "The One that Made Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu." This is usually translated as "One Creator." Not quite Hindu is it? Here, Guru Nanak was emphasizing his belief in a truly monothseistic philosophy of meditating on the One that transcends all creation, and all human inventions of applying different faces (i.e. Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu) to understand the One God. If Trumpp can't even translate the first two words correctly then you know he got a lot of other things wrong as well. If you are interested in eastern philosophy then of course I recommend the Guru Granth, I am a Sikh after all. But, PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS TRANSLATION!!!!!!!!!! There are much better translations out there. Amazon, why are you still carrying this one? Free speech I suppose;)Below is a better translation of the Mool Mantra, the first few lines in the Guru Granth. Sikhs believe that the Mool Mantra encompasses all of Sikh philosophy written in the Guru Granth, and the words Ek Oankar encompass all of the Mool Mantra, but Ek is all you need. One CreatorTrue Name, Creator of Everything, Without Fear, Without Anger, Undying Image, Without Birth, Self-Illumined, Guru's Grace.Meditate.True in the Beginning. True in all the Ages. True Now. Nanak, This Will Always be True.

Review

"Author Didier Ghez...again displays formidable skill as a researcher and animation historian. His is an amazing, Sherlockian investigatory ability to sleuth out 'lost' Disneyana artworks, and info about its artists, in unexplored private collections, as well as the vast holdings of the Walt Disney Archives and Animation Research Library." The Animated Eye, John Canemaker"As someone who revels in the ability to peek behind the creative curtain, I loved diving into They Drew As They Pleased: The Hidden Art Of Disney's Late Golden Age - The 1940s Part Two. The third volume in what I hope continues to be an ongoing series, it deep dives into the Disney archives to unearth and present the artwork drawn by studio artists that served as inspiration for Disney's iconic films and shorts."-A Site Called FredHoliday Gift Guide pick "If you want to know about great animation, buy this book. You don't have to have the rest of the series (you should, if you can); it stands alone. If you want a gorgeous Disney art book, buy this book. If the world is terrible and you think there's no such thing as beauty, buy this book."-MiceChat"showcases hundreds of illustrations of Disney characters, including ones that never made it to the screen" -Wall Street Journal"offers a wonderful Disney History lesson on six artists who are mostly unknown to even the most well read Disney animation fans. Didier Ghez's research in creating this book is fantastic, with resources from the descendants of each artist and art collected from various institutions and private collectors. Not only does this volume make a great holiday gift, but Ghez is working on at least three more releases and this could become your gifting tradition to the Disney fan in your life."-The Laughing Place"This book tells the story of each of these artists - Eduardo Sola Franco, Johnny Walbridge, Jack Miller, Campbell Grant, James Bodrero and Martin Provensen - with ample examples of their artistry. The book also contains new facts and finds, uncovered by Ghez during the course of his research, including the only known photograph of Bela Lugosi posing as "Chernabog" for Fantasia, abandoned sequences for Dumbo, and a hilarious selection of unused screwball characters, created by Walbridge, for the Tulgy Wood sequence in Alice in Wonderland. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. These books are absolutely vital, visually delightful and masterfully written. Thank you, Didier, for all you do - and for this a series of incredible books. Long may they continue! "-Cartoon Research"These books truly show some of the "hidden" artwork from Disney. It's amazing to see these lush illustrations and paintings, some of which are far from what you imagine as "Disney animation." The stories of the artists are fascinating and, in some cases, heartbreaking. If you want to dive a little deeper into the history of Disney, these books are a great place to start."-Geek Dad"The third in Didier Ghez's extensive survey of concept artwork for films from Disney's golden age is another treasure-trove of beautiful drawings, along with intimate profiles of six artists: Eduardo Sola Franco, Johnny Walbridge, Jack Miller, Campbell Grant, James Bodrero, and Martin Provensen."-Leonard Maltin, Film Critic and Historian"The text is fascinating, offering a wonderful insight into the work and the period, and works well with the images. Any 'Art of' book (for most people anyway) stands or falls on the images included, and here the book is a triumph; digging deep into the rich history of a studio like Disney and managing to present us with both works that we haven't seen before and beautiful and interesting art." -Starburst Magazine"The histories alone are worth the price of admission for giving insight into these people but the sketches are something else and with a lot of sight gags as well. There are two more volumes in this collection and based on this one, I'm looking forward to an interesting read"-SFCrowsnest

Yet another amazing book from Didier Ghez. The artwork is incredible in its scope and beauty. I have over 350 Disney themed books, and I can attest to the fact that 90% of the artwork is indeed previously unpublished. It is eye opening to see concept art for "Peter Pan", "Lady and the Tramp", and "Alice in Wonderland" from the early 1940s and how this art is reflected in these movies over a decade later. The concept art for "Don Quixote" and "Fantasia" alone are worth the price of the book.Buy this book NOW to ensure the future titles in this series see the light of day...please!!!!

They Drew as They Pleased - Vol 3: The Hidden Art of Disney's Late Golden Age, by Didier Ghez, is a must have, for animation fans as well as Disney fans! This third volume is chock full of some incredible, never-before-seen artwork created by the Disney studio artists in the 1940s and as the studio prepared for films like the breakthrough Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. There are chapters on artists such as Eduardo Sola Franco, Jack miller and several others. With preliminary sketches, background paintings, first hand commentary and artists' diary entries, we see the great momentum that Disney inspired in his artists. Much of this art never appeared on screen but made the Disney films some of the most important films ever made. Walt's Character Model Department is showcased, with the maquettes of characters and props that would be used in the films. The book is a meticulous record of just a portion of the Disney's legacy!

Next to the Story Department, The Character Model Department was also the heart of creativity at the Disney Studio. John Canemaker wrote a chapter in his book "Before The Animation Begins" about the inner workings of the department and the key personnel. A book on this topic really needed to be written and Didier Ghez was just the person to do it. Didier had told us that this would be the best entry in the series and for good reason. In addition to giving more in depth insight and understanding to the origins, functions, and personnel who worked in the Character Model Department, we're also treated to some insight on the development of features that were shelved for several years. Many dedicated fans know that most of the Disney features released in the late 40's and 50's were actually in production by the start of the 40's, but shelved due to economic setbacks and WWII. There are many model sheets and story sketches from those features and the features released during that timeframe. Chief among them are character model sheets for Peter Pan that are dated 1940. Michael Sporn posted those on his blog over ten years ago, but its nice to have them in published form. One of my favorite pieces is for a proposed Goofy short "How To Become Hep", in which Goofy learns the then current dance trends. Complete with Goofy in a zoot suit. That surely would have been an interesting period piece from Disney. What would have been cool to see in this volume, is previously unpublished art from Joe Grant, one of the most creative and inspired artists and storytellers ever. As the head of this department, his contributions are especially worth noting. This series has gathered lots of concept art from the Disney studio, several unseen by the public. What would be cool to see is an additional series, which shows concept art by film and even give further insight on unproduced films. This volume covers a wide array of feature films and unproduced films. This and the new information presented make it a must have for the Disney connoisseur.

This is another gorgeous entry in the They Drew As They Pleased series, this time looking at the Character Modeling Department at the Disney Studios, which officially existed from 1938-1942, though the artists may have been with the company before or after that span.As with the other volumes, Didier Ghez presents an introduction to the artists' group at the studio and what their general focus was, followed by brief biographies of a half dozen artists and examples of their work. From what I understand, the Character Modeling Department was tasked primarily with inventing characters and creating artistic inspiration that would be distilled into animation-friendly drawings. This is in contrast with the Story Department concept artists profiled in volume 2 of the series (1940s - Part One), who worked with a lot of mood pieces, background art, and more general character inspiration. I felt like the introduction to what exactly the Modeling Department was supposed to do was a little confusing, and like I was missing some vital background information on the politics and organizational structure of the Disney Studios, which is not something I felt when reading the other volumes, and feels a bit strange because I'm not unfamiliar with the topic. I think, though, this is at least partly because the department itself wasn't entirely set on a single task, as is demonstrated in the biographies for how the artists were hired in. That the lack of clear purpose is historical and not a lack in Ghez's writing is supported by the artwork included. It is primarily character studies, with occasional further concept art to develop the characters.I was a little disappointed that there are only a couple photos of the maquette sculptures that were created, even though one artist's profile specifically calls him out as being a sculptor, and the maquettes were something of an invention by the group. I was also disappointed that none of the women in the department were featured, even though there were at least two explicitly named and included in the men's profiles, but that could be explained by space constraints and their relatively shorter time or smaller repository of work in the archives. Three or four of the artists were very close friends, they even shared a house together for a while, and it was nice to read about each of them, but that does take space away from Fini and Sheila.I love this series for the quality of the books, for the interesting look at how artists' unique skills and styles fit into an animation studio's needs, and also for the wonderful artwork. It is as much an art book about artists and their paying-the-bills jobs as it is about Disney history. In fact, I forgot that I had won a copy through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program and bought my own when I happened to see it was newly released, because I found the previous installments to be such excellent work. Despite I would have liked to see a more expanded look at the Character Modeling Department artists and role, this third volume continues to be excellent, and I hope that Ghez will continue with a fourth volume that picks up after the mass layoff that ended most of these artists' careers at the Studio.

I enjoy listening to Nick and following his lessons on ine; it makes me feel as if l am back in the classroom. Further, it gave me a clearer understanding of drawing the "croquis" for sketching. Nick's instructions are very clear and it is such fun to listen and follow. I have purchased his book, "A Passion for Fashion"; it is super! The book is challenging me to get back into pattern making and sewing...l am a big fan of NICK!!

Interesting read though it resembled more a rough autobiography than a book with fashion tips. While those were also present I had bought it under the impression that was more in line with the youtube turorials where the recommendation had come from.

Informative and inspiring. It must be a lot better if there's less personal narrative.

What a Gem, love Nick to pieces, taught me so much. love, love, love and more love.

Expected a little more for my money

The book very nice

Enjoying reading this book. For those who are interested in fashion, this is a must-read book! Nick's passion for fashion is admirable.

Love the book... Thank you...

Review

“A great contribution to our understanding of the interaction of international human rights norms and local culture. Sally Engle Merry succeeds in showing the complexity of this relationship through a solid grounding in a great deal of field research.” (Cynthia Bowman, Northwestern University School of Law 2005-07-01)“In this fascinating and important book, Sally Engle Merry provides an extraordinary account of the complex articulations of bureaucracy, policy, and local culture around the issue of violence against women. Human Rights and Gender Violence makes a convincing argument for taking seriously the notion of local cultures and provides a model for how context, translation, values, and the particulars of social and institutional life can be given consideration.”--Donald Brenneis, University of California, Santa Cruz (Donald Brenneis, University of California, Santa Cruz 2005-07-01)"Merry provides an excellent model of how to conduct multi-sited fieldwork in a deterritorialized world, demonstrating how ethnography permits engagement with the fragments of a larger global system. . . . Wonderfully clear and engaging writing." (Penny Van Esterik Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology)"A book that should be read by every sociologist interested in globalization, international law, or human rights." (Elizabeth Heger Boyle American Journal of Sociology)"Merry does an invaluable service by marrying a broad methodological prescription for the analysis of human rights issues to a multi-layered discussion of diverse, compelling cases. Indeed, Merry's lucid writing, diverse tiers of analysis and insightful case studies ensure that this book is appropriate for both scholars and undergraduates with even a passing interest in human rights, ethnography or contemporary women's activism. In the end, the book provides a forcefull call to enlist the nuanced tools of cultural anthropologists and others familiar with non-western law and politics in the service of a spirited defense of the continued political vitality and impact of universal rights law." (David Mednicoff Law and Politics Book Review)"A valuable contribution to our thinking about international human rights, both because it examines in empirical detail the interaction between the transnational culture of human rights and alternative cultural discourses in specific contexts and because it acts as a corrective to oversimplified assumptions about the meaning of international human rights and the meaning of culture." (Kimberly Hutchings Ethics and International Affairs)

From the Inside Flap

Despite the best efforts of the United Nations and advances in human rights law, violence against women across the globe is still perpetuated in the gap between legal principle and local practices. Human Rights and Gender Violence investigates the tensions between global law and local justice from an insider’s perspective. As an observer of UN diplomatic negotiations as well as the workings of grassroots feminist organizations in several countries, Sally Engle Merry shows how human rights law holds authorities accountable for the protection of citizens even while it reinforces and expands state power. Using an approach that is both legal and anthropological, Merry contends that international human rights law must be framed in local terms to be accepted and thus effective.

Book for Anth of human rights course.Great way to learn about how the UN really functions. To me, that's far more what this book is about than gender across the globe. It's about how the UN deals with issues and how countries put forth (or don't) their agendas.

very good!
