...then this is the book for you. *finger-blasting spoilers ahead* The best thing I can say about this book is that the sex scenes reduced me to tears of helpless mirth. Or not so much sex scenes as depictions of "the one-eyed uppercut" as my husband hilariously dubbed the romantic sections, when I read them aloud to him. I mean the hero literally kisses the heroine and a sentence later goes for the (finger) gold. Have any of you ever been on a date??? What the holy heck???Also, have you ever heard of the weird French intellectual writer who wrote an entire novel without employing the letter "e". Well, and that's the only explanation I can come up with for Anita Hughes' torturous disdain for commas. Or maybe the Oxford comma people royally pissed her off? I do not get it. By the end of the book, I was ready to snip commas out of newspapers and paste them to plain sheets of paper and mail this vageuly threatening and oddly reminiscent of tadpoles oddity to her agent. "She slipped on earrings and a white dress and beige sandals and grabbed a white Gucci tote. She pictured Phillip's large knuckles and hairy wrists and other bony appendages and a shiver shook her."Okay, I made that up. Kinda. It's all pretty much like that. Also, I should mention what Phillip was wearing if I want to be fair and even-handed or if I want to mimic her to greater effect-- tan slacks and a white shirt with a collar-- aka the MOST BORING OUTFIT ON THE PLANET. WHO CARES?Honestly, that super boring detail is mentioned without fail every goshdarn time we encounter a new character.And oh GOOD GOD, does this woman love the word "lovely". Can anyone with a Kindle do a word-search and catalogue how many times the adjective is (over) used. The concierges think everything is lovely. Okay, his English is probably limited. He gets a pass. But the hero, a supposed writer and a heterosexual, American male who favors the frat guy gear of tan trousers and white button-down shirts, can think of no better way to describe ANYTHING in life than employing that godawful adjective. And don't get me started on the lovely-obsessed heroine . A weepy-eyed, cappuccino-snorting, shopaholic who must have some kind of unhealthy secret based on the serious, non-stop gorging and drinking that goes on while she's filming and who has been waiting all her life, not for a starring role in a movie, but to be finger-blasted by the hero, a whiny, dishonest, self-pitying trustafarian with a finger fetish. At least he didn't dub her "nether regions" lovely, the one saving grace of this tiresome, silly read.Do yourself a favor and just read the Eternal City edition of a Zagat's that this silly book is based on.
I couldn’t make it to Rome this summer, but reading this book was the next best thing to being there! Rome in Love tells the story of actress-on-the-rise Amelia Tate who’s been cast to play the Audrey Hepburn role in a remake of Roman Holiday. This is a dream come true for Amelia, but she’s overwhelmed by all the media attention when she arrives in The Eternal City to shoot the film. Wanting to escape the crush of a press conference at her hotel, she dons a maid’s uniform and takes off to explore Rome. While off on this adventure, she meets a handsome American journalist who doesn’t recognize her and she lets him think she works at the hotel. She also crosses paths with a young woman named Sophie who seems to be on the run. Amelia bonds with Sophie, and after confiding their secrets to each other, they agree to discover Rome together.Amelia tries to resist the charms of Philip, the reporter, because she has a boyfriend back home, but it’s hard not to fall in love in a place where the wine is always flowing and there are so many opportunities for romance. Unfortunately, there’s a problem in that Amelia continues to lie to Philip about who she is, and he’s not being totally upfront with her either. Will their relationship be able to survive when their truths are finally revealed? And how will Amelia’s experiences in Rome change her?Both Amelia and Sophie’s stories in the book mirror the journey of the heroine in Roman Holiday, which was fun. I liked Sophie and her budding romance with the young, idealistic doctor who treats her sprained ankle so much that I would’ve liked to have seen more of it in the book. Unfortunately, most of what happened to Sophie, including her falling for the doctor, happened off-page. Because I’m a fan of classic films and stars, my favorite part of the book was the old letters of Audrey Hepburn’s that Amelia finds stashed away in her hotel room. There was a whole, fascinating story in those letters that detailed Audrey’s time on the set of Roman Holiday, including her friendship/crush on Gregory Peck and her meeting of her future husband, Mel Ferrar.If you enjoy holiday romances, then this is the book for you. Reading it is a very pleasant way to spend a few hours.
A fun book that circles around the actress who is in a remake of Roman Holiday. Her own adventures mirror that of Princess Ann from Roman Holiday including two reporters, one who has a romantic interest. Add a real life princess and found letters from Audrey Hepburn to a friend when she was filming Roman Holiday and this is a great book for any fan of Audrey Hepburn or Roman Holiday! My only complaint is that there is some pre-marital sex which is totally unnecessary and the only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars.
A light- weight read , nice touches of Rome and environs tourist attractions. Interesting "letters" from Audrey Hepburn from back then....the descriptions of attire were fun at first, but got tiresome and then humorous! I'd say this little novel is geared to teenage girls and or to being made into a movie. Maybe that's author's intent overall, in keeping with the parallel!
One of the things I love most about Anita's writing is how details the locations & scenery. Especially here you get a real sense of the beauty of Rome & its' surroundings. She takes time to describe what the characters are wearing as well as their overall appearance and it helps to get to know the characters better. Here in this story as part of the book refers to Audrey Hepburn during her filming of Roman Holiday it is especially important as she was a fashion icon and all manner of dress in the 50's was glorious. I love how the characters evolve and find the importance of love in life.
I enjoy a light love story, especially one set somewhere I am planning on travelling to, but I do not appreciate descriptive sex scenes. I have read only several chapters, and do not plan on finishing it.
Waste of time and money. Ridiculous, childish writing. I'm quite certain this author has never even been to Rome.
