This is a fun book to read to your children before bed. The animals at the zoo are all getting ready for bed and putting on their pajamas. The book also teaches the abcs with an animals for each letter of the alphabet. For preschool to kindergarten. I know my grandsons will enjoy it.

The illustrations in this book are really really lovely. The text is a little cumbersome, but the illustrations make up for it!

We love all books like this!! Bright colors, fun designs, and learning all in one. You just can't get better than that!! Loved reading this with my kids before bed and now its on their kindle to let them read whenever they feel like!!

Cute book for reading to kids at bedtime. My 5 year old seemed to enjoy more than the 3 year old..

Very colorful and imaginative book. Didn't love the flow of words, but this would be helpful in learning the alphabet.

This book is great for my preschooler. She loves books with the alphabet and all the bright colors and animals really made her enjoy the book. I think this will become a top read for us at bedtime.

I bought this book for my 3 year old nephew and my niece found another story in the book called Janie and Grandpa. The story is about a little girl and her grandpa dying of cancer. I find this very disturbing. I do not understand why the second story was included in the book. I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Such a cute book. I really enjoyed reading this to my LOI wish I had the hard copy though.

As a reader of history books from a young age, for some reason this is a period I had read very little about. Or rather most of what I have read about it focuses on naval and maritime activity instead of the landlubbers. I get the idea I'm not the only one, and compared to other eras there seem to be much fewer books written about it. That isn't to say this book is a big fish in a small pond, but probably those interested in the era of pike and shot warfare are grateful for any books written on the subject. The focus of this book isn't so much strategy and tactics, but how states changed to marshal the resources to field larger, better trained and more homogeneous forces. While perhaps not as exciting to many it is still interesting and important. To do so the book must survey wars of the time, so it is a good general military history as well. While not quite a gunpowder empires history, the books does go farther afield than most and covers Central and Eastern Europe in addition to Western, as well as the Ottomans ( though not much about the Ottoman / Persian wars ). That in itself makes it worth the read. Due to the organization of the book, the same subjects can get covered more than once, first from one side say for instance the Austrians & Hungarians, then from the Ottoman perspective. Once I grasped that my feeling of deja vu diminished. I doubt those interested in this time period will regret giving this a read.

Although he avoids using the term "revolution" as in the popular phrase "revolution in military affairs," and he certainly didn't create the concept, which was done for this period by Professor Michael Roberts in the 1950s, Urban has written a very readable narrative history of the era. This book is not so much about the strategy and tactics of the period as much as it's about now strategy and tactics evolved over these centuries and why and how they evolved. The first thing Urban does is set the stage by reviewing the status of warfare in Europe and around the Mediterranean in the 1500s. This is important because it establishes a baseline for his review of change over the next 200 years. The author then goes on to discuss the armies, weapons, cultures, politics, and the conflicts of the period.Although conceptually the book doesn't present anything new, as a historical narrative Urban does an excellent job of presenting the concept. If you're interested in the period, or if you're interested in military change during the early modern period, you'll want to read this book.(Note: for more on military change during this period also see, The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 1500-1800 by Geoffrey Parker, and The Military Revolution 1560-1660: An Inaugural Lecture delivered before the Queen's University of Belfast) by Michael Roberts.

Misleading title. This is a political history of wars from the 1500's to 1700's with little space devoted to actual evolution of warfare or firearms and tactics. Well written and researched though. Even covers the Ottoman wars.

Amazing. Military history at its best. Covers periods and locations I have rarely seen printed in English, or Spanish for that matter. I fully recommend it. Clear, crisp prose. A well told and interesting story.

Another of Urbans foundational works on military historyEnlightening perspective of great relevance to understanding conflict's pivotal role in history ; neglected as is far too much of our cultural legacy

Great book. Lots of military history I never knew. Highly recommend it to those interested in combat and to a lesser extent tactics.

Good read

Although not as detailed as expected, I enjoyed this book. On the other hand, the book covers 200 years of history. Would like the author to have covered the wars at the end of the 1600s / early 1700s in greater detail. Found it readable and worth the price; good companion to "Furies."

The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance

Review

“A family memoir written with a grace and modesty that almost belie the sweep of its contents: Proust, Rilke, Japanese art, the rue de Monceau, Vienna during the Second World War. The most enchanting history lesson imaginable.” ―The New Yorker“An extraordinary history...A wondrous book, as lustrous and exquisitely crafted as the netsuke at its heart.” ―The Christian Science Monitor“A lovely, gripping book.” ―The Wall Street Journal“Enthralling . . . [de Waal's] essayistic exploration of his family's past pointedly avoids any sentimentality . . . The Hare with Amber Eyes belongs on the same shelf with Vladimir Nabokov's Speak, Memory.” ―Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World“This is a book Sebald would have loved.” ―The Irish Times“At one level [Edmund de Waal] writes in vivid detail of how the fortunes were used to establish the Ephrussis' lavish lives and high positions in Paris and Vienna society. And, as Jews, of their vulnerability: the Paris family shaken by turn-of-the century anti-Semitism surging out of the Dreyfus affair; the Vienna branch utterly destroyed in Hitler's 1937 Anschluss . . . At a deeper level, though, Hare is about something more, just as Marcel Proust's masterpiece was about something more than the trappings of high society. As with Remembrance of Things Past, it uses the grandeur to light up interior matters: aspirations, passions, their passing; all in a duel, and a duet, of elegy and irony.” ―Richard Eder, The Boston Globe“Absorbing . . . In this book about people who defined themselves by the objects they owned, de Waal demonstrates that human stories are more powerful than even the greatest works of art.” ―Adam Kirsch, The New Republic“Delicately constructed and wonderfully nuanced . . . There are many family memoirs whose stories are as enticing as Edmund de Waal's. There are few, though, whose raw material has been crafted into quite such an engrossing and exquisitely written book as The Hare with Amber Eyes . . . One of the great triumphs of The Hare with Amber Eyes . . . is not just the assiduous way in which de Waal interrogates his raw evidence--scattered articles and newspaper cuttings, old paintings, forgotten buildings--but the way he summons up different eras so evocatively . . . [De Waal] is, too, as you would expect of a potter, wonderfully tactile in his investigations, interrogating the physical feel of the Ephrussis' different buildings, touching surfaces, assessing materials. This sensuality transmits itself also to his prose, which is beautiful to read--lithe and precise, crisp and delicate. The result is a memoir of the very first rank, one full of grace, economy, and extraordinary emotion.” ―Andrew Holgate, The Barnes & Noble Review“Remarkable . . . To be handed a story as durable and exquisitely crafted as this is a rare pleasure . . . Like the netsuke themselves, this book is impossible to put down. You have in your hands a masterpiece.” ―Frances Wilson, The Sunday Times (London)“From a hard and vast archival mass of journals, memoirs, newspaper clippings and art-history books, Mr. de Waal has fashioned, stroke by minuscule stroke, a book as fresh with detail as if it had been written from life, and as full of beauty and whimsy as a netsuke from the hands of a master carver. Buy two copies of his book; keep one and give the other to your closest bookish friend.” ―The Economist“What a treat of a book! It projects an iridescent mirage that once was real, a pageant of exquisite fragility, an aesthetic passion somehow surviving the brutalities of history. Mr. de Waal's nostalgia is tart, tactile, marvelously nuanced.” ―Frederic Morton, author of A Nervous Splendor: Vienna, 1888/1889 and The Rothschilds: Portrait of a Dynasty“A self-questioning, witty, sharply perceptive book . . . The Hare with Amber Eyes is rich in epiphanic moments . . . By writing objects into his family story [de Waal] has achieved something remarkable.” ―Tanya Harrod, The Times Literary Supplement“A beautiful and unusual book . . . [A] unique memoir of [de Waal's] family . . . De Waal has a mystical ability to so inhabit the long-gone moment as to seem to suspend inexorable history, personal and impersonal . . . A work that succeeds in several known genres: as family memoir, travel literature (de Waal's Japan is the nearest thing to being there, and over decades), essays on migration and exile, on cultural misperceptions, and on de Waal's attempt to define his relationship with his own kaolin creations. His book is also a new genre, unnamed and maybe unnameable.” ―Veronica Horwell, The Guardian“Part family memoir, part Proustian confession, subtle, spare and elegant.” ―Hilary Spurling, The Independent“A marvelously absorbing synthesis of art history, detective story and memoir . . . A nimble history of one of the richest European families at the turn of the century . . . Remarkable.” ―Kirkus Reviews

I was truly sorry to reach the end of this book. It is a mesmerizing tale of a Jewish family whose history begins in Odessa where the patriarch establishes the financial basis for a banking empire to rival that of the Rothschild family by cornering the market for grain exports. Like the Rothschilds, the Ephrussi family sends succeeding generations to establish branch banks in major cities of Europe including Paris and Vienna. The story opens in Paris in 1871, where the author's great-uncle becomes an art critic and collector. In addition to becoming an early supporter of the Impressionists, he also latches on to the then-prevailing Parisian enthusiasm for all things Japanese. He amasses a collection of 264 netsuke which he sends as a wedding present to his cousin Victor in Vienna in 1899. The story of the succeeding generations is told through the netsuke, which become one of the few art treasures that the family was able to recover after World War II because a gentile maid who had been in their employ since the age of fourteen secreted them away in her mattress. But this is much more than a chronological history of lost wealth. The author, an accomplished potter with an international reputation who has lived and studied in Japan, has created a detailed study of the relationship between the netsuke and where they have been. He researches his family's history and visits the homes where the netsuke have lived. In so doing, he creates vivid portraits of both the netsuke's surroundings and the family members who interacted with them over the years. The result is a unique and captivating story that transports the reader back in time to the spaces inhabited by the netsuke and his family.

I studied Japanese history and netsuke in college, which is why I bought this book. But it is so much more than that. The family on which it is based are fascinating (thanks, author, for the family tree at the start of the book, something that Tolkien taught me to appreciate). It's fun dusting off my French here and there. The many references to specific artworks were nearly all works I didn't know, which made me feel left out. So I started pulling them up on my phone as I came across them in the book. (e.g. Monet's portrait of his wife Camille in a red kimono with a Samurai on the side just so). WOW! Doing that gives this book an extra dimension that is out of this world. It's like a guided tour of far countries and cultures, and very well done indeed. The aforementioned Monet is sometimes mentioned as part of a necessary conversation about cultural appropriation and sexualization... akin to the history of the Confederacy in some ways, and as I write this "Crazy Rich Asians" is being discussed in this contest. Just as Ron Chernow's book "Washington" demonstrates that politics today are just a high-tech replay of America's past, this book chronicles an art scene as it was, warts and all. I finally understand just how Asian objets-d'art ended up as part of my own Missouri-rooted inheritances. A book to savor. I'm not done yet and I'll hate to see it end. If anyone out there knows of similar books, LMK!

This book had such promise because it's a great story. But the promise was never fulfilled because of the way the author chose to tell the story. I found it very disjointed and very hard to follow. Thank God for the pedigree chart in the front because keeping the characters straight was difficult. This book would have been much more successful if it had been chronologically organised. But we dive into one part of the family then we're thrown into something else and it feels as if we lurch from topic to topic. I know the author probably had difficulty distancing himself from the story because it is his family and he knows details which fill in the cracks. Unfortunately, we're not always privy to those details. Or they are revealed much later in the story. As it is a story of a Jewish family in Europe w/ vast wealth, we know the rise of the Nazis to power is going to be devastating. That part of the story is well told. The sparse, mostly unemotional facts are told and the reader is left to respond. I did feel that was well done. But the title of the book and the expectations of a discussion about 264 netsuke are misleading. The uniqueness of the hare w/ amber eyes is never really elaborated upon. Perhaps the paperback edition of the book omitted the detailed photos of the objects and this skewed my reaction. But I did expect more about them. I strongly feel that Mr. de Waal was not done well by his editor. A better editor would ahve added more coherence to the structure of the story and provided more focus. This story could have been told so much better and should have been told so much better. I was disappointed,.

Edmund de Waal, a well-known potter, inherited a collection of 264 netsuke, small delicately carved Japanese objects, originally intended as a counterweight with a small bag on one side and the netsuke on the other, worn around the sash of a man's kimono. At the end of the 19th century they became all the rage in Europe as collectors' items. The author desribes how the collection got into his family and what happend to it over the years. By doing so, he traces back his family's fascinating history. He conjures up the atmosphere in Paris and Vienna, describes in great detail homes and daily life of a super rich family, from their beginnings as bankers in Odessa to their dispersal into various countries. Especially the period around the second world war, in which everything is taken away from this Jewish family, is very moving. I found the beginning a little slow reading, but after a while I really got sucked into this story and often felt like a fly on the wall.

Another great story by Wendy Meadows!!! I have enjoyed everything I have read by Wendy. I like the premise of this new series. Gift baskets are a fun storyline. I love Spot the bird. He is hysterical. I like Preston the police chief a lot. Hope the next book is ready soon 😊👍

The plot was okay but it was very confusing when the point of view changed every couple of sentences. One paragraph would be from the main woman's mind and then the next sentence from the police chief's.

I liked the. Storyline. It made you guessing who might have been involved.....and as one door opened another one closed. The writer kept you guessing while you did twists and turns. I enjoyed reading the story.....!!!!

I enjoyed the quick, easiness of this tale. The characters are believable and the plot just thick enough to keep you interested. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries.

This is the first book in this series and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading additional books as they become available.

Loved the characters in this new series

What a mystery! Nothing seemed be fit to solve the crime. Thanks to the parrot,it all works out! Liked the interactions of the characters.

I only remember giving one book, out of the hundreds that I have reviewed, a one star review. This book was almost the second. The only reason I gave it two instead, was because I realize how hard it is to write a book, and to actually finish one, deserves some kudos. But I do not recommend this book, unless the author does some serious editing. The biggest problem with it is how Meadows wrote the point of view. In one paragraph there can be three different people’s points of view. I found myself having to reread many parts to figure out who was talking. The books that I’ve read that have different points of view, often will have the new chapter with the person’s name, and then go from there. But this book would not lend itself to that style since it’s a very short book, and usually that style is done in Thrillers, not Cozies.Perhaps an easy fix would be to separate the story into more paragraphs, add some more better dialogue, and another round of edits. The other problem I had with this book was with the shop owner, Hillary, and how often she mentioned her husband’s death. If this book was a 350 page cozy that would be one thing, but when a quarter of the 90 pages is her talking, thinking, or remembering the past in regards to her late husband, it’s just too much. The mystery itself was pretty easy to figure out, it practically tells you in the description on Amazon. But at this point, an easy mystery is the least of this books problems. To end on a positive note, I think the older lady that helps out in the basket shop, and Hillary’s parrot, have a lot of potential has fun characters in this series. This storyline could be the basis of a very entertaining cozy.

I purchased this book to help me with planning a meditation class for children. I have used it several times and have LOVED it! The activities are simple and easily lends itself to further discussion with the children. I have found it to be appropriate for younger children as well as early teens. I would recommend any one using this with children to use actual rocks or pebbles this enhances the kinesthetic learning aspect of the activities and gives them something tangible to hold on to which increases memory. The message and method found in this book are well worth the purchase.

This is a fantastic book to teach your kids about mindfulness, giving, calmness and more. I highly recommend this book to share with your children. My son was reluctant to read this at first but after sometime he began to realize the positive lessons he could learn. Unfortunately we lost our copy so I will be purchasing another one soon.

My kids like the stories, although they aren't exactly written well for reading aloud.

The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and inspiring. Young and older people will find it useful and enjoyable.

Bought this for my daughter. She enjoyed it but be prepared to answer questions about life and death and beyond. I recommend it to enlighten a child if you are a follower of Buddha.

Ok so I just got the book despite the fact it said it was delivered yesterday. The book itself seems amazing. Perfect for a young boy struggling with pre puberty stress. I love it!!!!!

I have admittedly been resistant to reading books by TNH in the past, I thought "that is not really my style of zen" But then I saw a pebble in your pocket in the books recommended for children section. I picked this one out and I am quite impressed. This book makes for great bed time reading to my six year old girl and it hasn't got a whole lot of jargon or difficult vocabulary requiring breaks for explanation. Thanks TNH for creating the opportunity for me to change my mind.

This book is for older children then I was looking forI teach 3-5 year olds but I'm sure it will come in handy in the future

Shakespeare's Words: A Glossary and Language Companion

From Booklist

The main lexical references for Shakespeare scholars in the twentieth century were first Alexander Schmidt's two-volume Shakespeare Lexicon (1874) and later C. T. Onions' Shakespeare Glossary, which appeared in 1911 and was revised by Onions in 1919. A further revision in 1986, by Robert D. Eagleson, kept Onions in print but failed, to some extent, to satisfy scholars. The new Shakespeare's Words seems likely to fill the void created by the superannuated Onions.Using the New Penguin Shakespeare as their text, the editors, linguist David Crystal and his actor son Ben Crystal, first collected all of the "problem" words flagged by the Penguin editors and then scoured the plays and sonnets for additional "difficult" words--especially words that are no longer current or that have developed a different sense since Shakespeare's time. After a few further additions, their entries totaled 21,263 under 13,626 headwords.Rather than defining a word by listing a single near synonym, the Crystals decided that a system called lexical triangulation would better reflect the complexity of Shakespeare's language. Most entries have three glosses, each providing a slightly different slant. For example, englut is glossed as "swallow up, gulp down, devour." Each entry includes part of speech, an illustrative quotation (with text and context identified), and selected references to other occurrences. Sidebars contain brief tutorials on address forms, money, weapons, and more. Readers newly acquainted with Shakespeare will benefit greatly by browsing through the Crystals' list of 100 frequently encountered words, which are accompanied by more illustrative quotations than are provided elsewhere. Other useful features are a chronology, plot synopses, diagrams illustrating interactions of characters, and 16 appendixes providing brief definitions for historical people, places, foreign terms, and other vocabulary not found in the A-Z section. This is a most ambitious work that will be of immense value to student and scholar alike, a worthy successor to the landmark volumes that preceded it. Although one can never get quite as much out of reading Shakespeare (except for the sonnets) as on can from seeing his works performed, most of us cannot see performances of many of the plays even once, much less regularly, so we can only read them. And since it was written over 400 years ago and the English language has lost much of its formerly extensive vocabulary, it is very helpful to have a lexicon that provides the reader with a better understanding of the story, characters, events, and, even, humor of these wonderful works.

My favorite reference book. Not for casual devotees of Shakespeare. But if you’re going to be writing about the Bard or, like me, trying to recreate his character n fiction, this book is indispensable. The authors call it a ‘glossary’, but it’s really a comprehensive encyclopedia of every word Shakespeare ever used in his plays and poems. It’s a Shakespearean Rosetta stone. And more than dictionary, it includes charts, tables and sections categorized by topic. Shakespearean exclamations! Shakespearean curses! Shakespearean herbs? Yes. If you go to my blog at richnovotney.com I can recommend a bunch of other Shakespeare-related books, all available at Amazon.

This resource has become indispensable when I sit down to read a play or preparing a role. It is thorough and easy to use. My one quibble comes from placement of the page numbers on the upper inside corners of the pages. What? the Upper outside corners list the first and last words of the page, but the page numbers are buried by the spine. This makes finding something by page number (like one of the many interesting and useful sidebars) rather inconvenient, as one cannot simply flip through at the bottom outside corner to find the page quickly. I hope the authors will consider changing this in future editions. But this one tiny flaw in no way negates the massive usefulness of the information and scholarship this book contains!

Bought this as a gift for my boyfriend as he writes classic style poetry. He was extremely excited when he opened the package to find this in there. I myself have taken a look through it and if you're a writer of ANY kind I would recommend this book.

Wonderful ! It's very updated! I bought this for my dad, and he's going to use it to teach his college Shakespeare course! He was excited when it came, and said it's "perfect."

This book is very helpful for anyone who has to read Shakespeare or just want to read it. I bought it to use in my Shakespearean Literature class, and it has saved my brain a number of times, helping to clarify sentences that can get confusing because of one or two words. It even gives exact examples of where the Bard uses them in his plays, giving sentence, as well as play, act, scene. It's also holding up quite well, despite being brought to class every weekday in a bag with many other things. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to make reading Shakespeare easier.

The book is excellent, as the other reviews testify.People have given the Kindle version low marks, but I've found it quite serviceable. The various parts of the book are in the contents, and each letter of the lexicon is a separate chapter, so one can move among letters by swiping up and down. To find a term, simply search for it, and use your judgment in selecting the appropriate result.Usually I'd use this book by having it open on my phone or tablet, and referencing it while reading Shakespeare on my Kindle itself. This moots the issue of switching back and forth.

Great resource for Shakespeare scholars and fans alike

Review

“Engel has made an important contribution to the debate about the future of tort law. He presents an exceptionally clear and compelling explanation of why most injurers are never asked to pay compensation for the harm they have inflicted on others—and why most injury victims never receive justice. In showing how and why this happens, he also offers us a way to change it.” (Former US Congressman Henry Waxman)“An insightful and thought-provoking investigation into what people in America really do when someone injures them, why, and what we can do about it. Engel examines the facts and exposes the truth: the vast majority of people injured by others’ wrongdoing don’t sue or even consider suing. He then explains why—and the high price we’re all paying as a result. The Myth of the Litigious Society calls for public policy based on reality and dedicated to making sure the law compensates, deters, and does justice as it should.” (Arthur Bryant, chairman of Public Justice)“Engel provides an important counterpoint to the rampant irresponsible reporting on civil justice, arguing persuasively that the oft-repeated claims about the litigious society are wrong. We’re a nation of lumpers—not a nation of litigants—and Engel shows both why this is so and why our tendency to ‘lump it’ is a serious problem for us all.” (Tom Baker, University of Pennsylvania Law School)“In this well-crafted book, Engel undertakes an incisive and engaging examination of a puzzling aspect of our legal culture and issues a profound challenge to our notions of the efficacy of legal remedy.” (Marc Galanter, University of Wisconsin–Madison)Engel writes well and makes a strong case. How sound is his thesis? Sachin Pandya, a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law has pointed out that Engel’s thesis is supported by studies that show that a good percentage of people choose not to sue for injuries. This may be so even when they have a winning case. He calls this reaction 'underclaiming,' and he finds Engel’s explanations for underclaiming an important contribution." (The Federal Lawyer)"Using references to movies, fiction, and personal accounts, [Engel] makes a theoretical subject more accessible. Though at heart, this is a sociological treatise, so expect a dollop of theory. . . . Clearly written, the book sets forth the author's position in nine short chapters and contributes to the debate." (Library Journal)"Engel presents a convincing argument for a shifting of the dominant narrative based on evidence of the insufficiency of the civil justice system and social science studies that explain why human nature and societal forces have led to the current predicament." (London School of Economics Review of Books)

This is a very insightful and satisfying book about the miracle season of the Mets. Stanley Cohen paints a vivid picture against the backdrop of the wider state of affairs of that era, from baseball to national events. I came away with an understanding of how baseball operated in a more innocent time and how it was about to irrevocably change. And I learned a lot of details about my favorite Mets players from my youth. My only wish was that the book included more artwork, including color photos.

This is the perfect book for a Mets fan suffering through a horrible season. The author perfectly mixes game recaps with interviews. I liked that he didn't dwell on the sociological significance of the season or related world events, instead emphasizing how the Mets won the Series. Even if you think that you know everything about the '69 Mets, you will learn something. I loved this book.

Any book about the Metsies will hold my attention, but his present day interviews with the players and coaches make this a very special book.

I am a Baseball Historian and this is one book that I truly treasure and can read over and over again.

I've read a few books about my favorite baseball team without ever discovering one I'd call my clear favorite. But there is no doubt this is the happiest, easiest book I know about featuring the New York Mets.Established in 1962, the Mets had losing records in each of their first seven seasons, mired at the bottom of the National League for all but two of them. But a change was slowly building in the organization, with a firm but flexibly minded manager having taken stock of his young and talented team. They would be called "The Miracle Mets," though one theme of this book is the players, or at least most of them, don't see it as a "miracle.""Our winning the pennant and the Series was not as complicated as people sometimes make it out to be," explained pitcher Tom Seaver, who won the Cy Young Award in 1969. "We were the best team in baseball, and that's why we won.""There was nothing miraculous about it," shortstop Bud Harrelson said. "We went out each day with the idea of winning, and most of the time we won."Cohen's 1988 account of the Mets' 1969 season includes original interviews with 23 of the 25 players who were on the Mets' postseason roster. When he first researched the book in 1986, all of them were not only still alive, but two of them, Seaver and pitcher Nolan Ryan, were still on player rosters. Another, Harrelson, was a coach on what would become in October 1986 the only other Mets team to win it all.The book is well-organized that way, with Cohen alternating between an account of the season as it unfolded and interviews with the Mets who share their thoughts about how it happened and what they were feeling in often unguarded and charming ways. The team had great pitching, solid fielding, and hitting that wasn't spectacular but very timely. The only voice really missing here is manager Gil Hodges, who died in 1972. Cohen's interviews make clear the players saw him as the difference maker, especially during the regular season when the Mets came from behind to catch the early-surging Chicago Cubs. The Cubs' manager, Leo Durocher, pressed too much and his team wore down from the strain. Hodges knew how to push the right buttons at the right times without taxing his players so much."I think Gil would have won with the Cubs in '69," claimed catcher J. C. Martin, who played for both managers after being traded to the Cubs in 1970. "I think it was the manager that made the difference."The book reads a bit thin in places, especially when it gets to the post-season. Cohen says he spent a lot of time reading the New York Times day-by-day accounts of the games; I wish he had given more attention to what the city tabloids were saying, especially The Daily News, which was the heart of sports journalism in New York City then. But if you want to get beyond the shots of sliding outfield catches and tickertape parades to find out what the Mets were all about that summer, this is a book worth reading. If you are a Mets fan like me, the story gets better when you read it more than once.

I didn't mind the content of the book, if you READ it. The audible book is absolutely terrible. The narrator, Ian Eugene Ryan, doesn't know how to pronounce the names of most of the players, many of whom are in the Hall of Fame.. His pronunciation of some basic English words is like a fifth grader. I don't know how the author or the publisher can allow this to happen. Doesn't anyone edit these books? It really made a great story a very bad listen.
