Another great story by Wendy Meadows!!! I have enjoyed everything I have read by Wendy. I like the premise of this new series. Gift baskets are a fun storyline. I love Spot the bird. He is hysterical. I like Preston the police chief a lot. Hope the next book is ready soon 😊👍

The plot was okay but it was very confusing when the point of view changed every couple of sentences. One paragraph would be from the main woman's mind and then the next sentence from the police chief's.

I liked the. Storyline. It made you guessing who might have been involved.....and as one door opened another one closed. The writer kept you guessing while you did twists and turns. I enjoyed reading the story.....!!!!

I enjoyed the quick, easiness of this tale. The characters are believable and the plot just thick enough to keep you interested. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries.

This is the first book in this series and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading additional books as they become available.

Loved the characters in this new series

What a mystery! Nothing seemed be fit to solve the crime. Thanks to the parrot,it all works out! Liked the interactions of the characters.

I only remember giving one book, out of the hundreds that I have reviewed, a one star review. This book was almost the second. The only reason I gave it two instead, was because I realize how hard it is to write a book, and to actually finish one, deserves some kudos. But I do not recommend this book, unless the author does some serious editing. The biggest problem with it is how Meadows wrote the point of view. In one paragraph there can be three different people’s points of view. I found myself having to reread many parts to figure out who was talking. The books that I’ve read that have different points of view, often will have the new chapter with the person’s name, and then go from there. But this book would not lend itself to that style since it’s a very short book, and usually that style is done in Thrillers, not Cozies.Perhaps an easy fix would be to separate the story into more paragraphs, add some more better dialogue, and another round of edits. The other problem I had with this book was with the shop owner, Hillary, and how often she mentioned her husband’s death. If this book was a 350 page cozy that would be one thing, but when a quarter of the 90 pages is her talking, thinking, or remembering the past in regards to her late husband, it’s just too much. The mystery itself was pretty easy to figure out, it practically tells you in the description on Amazon. But at this point, an easy mystery is the least of this books problems. To end on a positive note, I think the older lady that helps out in the basket shop, and Hillary’s parrot, have a lot of potential has fun characters in this series. This storyline could be the basis of a very entertaining cozy.

I purchased this book to help me with planning a meditation class for children. I have used it several times and have LOVED it! The activities are simple and easily lends itself to further discussion with the children. I have found it to be appropriate for younger children as well as early teens. I would recommend any one using this with children to use actual rocks or pebbles this enhances the kinesthetic learning aspect of the activities and gives them something tangible to hold on to which increases memory. The message and method found in this book are well worth the purchase.

This is a fantastic book to teach your kids about mindfulness, giving, calmness and more. I highly recommend this book to share with your children. My son was reluctant to read this at first but after sometime he began to realize the positive lessons he could learn. Unfortunately we lost our copy so I will be purchasing another one soon.

My kids like the stories, although they aren't exactly written well for reading aloud.

The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and inspiring. Young and older people will find it useful and enjoyable.

Bought this for my daughter. She enjoyed it but be prepared to answer questions about life and death and beyond. I recommend it to enlighten a child if you are a follower of Buddha.

Ok so I just got the book despite the fact it said it was delivered yesterday. The book itself seems amazing. Perfect for a young boy struggling with pre puberty stress. I love it!!!!!

I have admittedly been resistant to reading books by TNH in the past, I thought "that is not really my style of zen" But then I saw a pebble in your pocket in the books recommended for children section. I picked this one out and I am quite impressed. This book makes for great bed time reading to my six year old girl and it hasn't got a whole lot of jargon or difficult vocabulary requiring breaks for explanation. Thanks TNH for creating the opportunity for me to change my mind.

This book is for older children then I was looking forI teach 3-5 year olds but I'm sure it will come in handy in the future

Shakespeare's Words: A Glossary and Language Companion

From Booklist

The main lexical references for Shakespeare scholars in the twentieth century were first Alexander Schmidt's two-volume Shakespeare Lexicon (1874) and later C. T. Onions' Shakespeare Glossary, which appeared in 1911 and was revised by Onions in 1919. A further revision in 1986, by Robert D. Eagleson, kept Onions in print but failed, to some extent, to satisfy scholars. The new Shakespeare's Words seems likely to fill the void created by the superannuated Onions.Using the New Penguin Shakespeare as their text, the editors, linguist David Crystal and his actor son Ben Crystal, first collected all of the "problem" words flagged by the Penguin editors and then scoured the plays and sonnets for additional "difficult" words--especially words that are no longer current or that have developed a different sense since Shakespeare's time. After a few further additions, their entries totaled 21,263 under 13,626 headwords.Rather than defining a word by listing a single near synonym, the Crystals decided that a system called lexical triangulation would better reflect the complexity of Shakespeare's language. Most entries have three glosses, each providing a slightly different slant. For example, englut is glossed as "swallow up, gulp down, devour." Each entry includes part of speech, an illustrative quotation (with text and context identified), and selected references to other occurrences. Sidebars contain brief tutorials on address forms, money, weapons, and more. Readers newly acquainted with Shakespeare will benefit greatly by browsing through the Crystals' list of 100 frequently encountered words, which are accompanied by more illustrative quotations than are provided elsewhere. Other useful features are a chronology, plot synopses, diagrams illustrating interactions of characters, and 16 appendixes providing brief definitions for historical people, places, foreign terms, and other vocabulary not found in the A-Z section. This is a most ambitious work that will be of immense value to student and scholar alike, a worthy successor to the landmark volumes that preceded it. Although one can never get quite as much out of reading Shakespeare (except for the sonnets) as on can from seeing his works performed, most of us cannot see performances of many of the plays even once, much less regularly, so we can only read them. And since it was written over 400 years ago and the English language has lost much of its formerly extensive vocabulary, it is very helpful to have a lexicon that provides the reader with a better understanding of the story, characters, events, and, even, humor of these wonderful works.

My favorite reference book. Not for casual devotees of Shakespeare. But if you’re going to be writing about the Bard or, like me, trying to recreate his character n fiction, this book is indispensable. The authors call it a ‘glossary’, but it’s really a comprehensive encyclopedia of every word Shakespeare ever used in his plays and poems. It’s a Shakespearean Rosetta stone. And more than dictionary, it includes charts, tables and sections categorized by topic. Shakespearean exclamations! Shakespearean curses! Shakespearean herbs? Yes. If you go to my blog at richnovotney.com I can recommend a bunch of other Shakespeare-related books, all available at Amazon.

This resource has become indispensable when I sit down to read a play or preparing a role. It is thorough and easy to use. My one quibble comes from placement of the page numbers on the upper inside corners of the pages. What? the Upper outside corners list the first and last words of the page, but the page numbers are buried by the spine. This makes finding something by page number (like one of the many interesting and useful sidebars) rather inconvenient, as one cannot simply flip through at the bottom outside corner to find the page quickly. I hope the authors will consider changing this in future editions. But this one tiny flaw in no way negates the massive usefulness of the information and scholarship this book contains!

Bought this as a gift for my boyfriend as he writes classic style poetry. He was extremely excited when he opened the package to find this in there. I myself have taken a look through it and if you're a writer of ANY kind I would recommend this book.

Wonderful ! It's very updated! I bought this for my dad, and he's going to use it to teach his college Shakespeare course! He was excited when it came, and said it's "perfect."

This book is very helpful for anyone who has to read Shakespeare or just want to read it. I bought it to use in my Shakespearean Literature class, and it has saved my brain a number of times, helping to clarify sentences that can get confusing because of one or two words. It even gives exact examples of where the Bard uses them in his plays, giving sentence, as well as play, act, scene. It's also holding up quite well, despite being brought to class every weekday in a bag with many other things. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to make reading Shakespeare easier.

The book is excellent, as the other reviews testify.People have given the Kindle version low marks, but I've found it quite serviceable. The various parts of the book are in the contents, and each letter of the lexicon is a separate chapter, so one can move among letters by swiping up and down. To find a term, simply search for it, and use your judgment in selecting the appropriate result.Usually I'd use this book by having it open on my phone or tablet, and referencing it while reading Shakespeare on my Kindle itself. This moots the issue of switching back and forth.

Great resource for Shakespeare scholars and fans alike

The Myth of the Litigious Society: Why We Don't Sue (Chicago Series in Law and Society)

Review

“Engel has made an important contribution to the debate about the future of tort law. He presents an exceptionally clear and compelling explanation of why most injurers are never asked to pay compensation for the harm they have inflicted on others—and why most injury victims never receive justice. In showing how and why this happens, he also offers us a way to change it.” (Former US Congressman Henry Waxman)“An insightful and thought-provoking investigation into what people in America really do when someone injures them, why, and what we can do about it. Engel examines the facts and exposes the truth: the vast majority of people injured by others’ wrongdoing don’t sue or even consider suing. He then explains why—and the high price we’re all paying as a result. The Myth of the Litigious Society calls for public policy based on reality and dedicated to making sure the law compensates, deters, and does justice as it should.” (Arthur Bryant, chairman of Public Justice)“Engel provides an important counterpoint to the rampant irresponsible reporting on civil justice, arguing persuasively that the oft-repeated claims about the litigious society are wrong. We’re a nation of lumpers—not a nation of litigants—and Engel shows both why this is so and why our tendency to ‘lump it’ is a serious problem for us all.” (Tom Baker, University of Pennsylvania Law School)“In this well-crafted book, Engel undertakes an incisive and engaging examination of a puzzling aspect of our legal culture and issues a profound challenge to our notions of the efficacy of legal remedy.” (Marc Galanter, University of Wisconsin–Madison)Engel writes well and makes a strong case. How sound is his thesis? Sachin Pandya, a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law has pointed out that Engel’s thesis is supported by studies that show that a good percentage of people choose not to sue for injuries. This may be so even when they have a winning case. He calls this reaction 'underclaiming,' and he finds Engel’s explanations for underclaiming an important contribution." (The Federal Lawyer)"Using references to movies, fiction, and personal accounts, [Engel] makes a theoretical subject more accessible. Though at heart, this is a sociological treatise, so expect a dollop of theory. . . . Clearly written, the book sets forth the author's position in nine short chapters and contributes to the debate." (Library Journal)"Engel presents a convincing argument for a shifting of the dominant narrative based on evidence of the insufficiency of the civil justice system and social science studies that explain why human nature and societal forces have led to the current predicament." (London School of Economics Review of Books)

This is a very insightful and satisfying book about the miracle season of the Mets. Stanley Cohen paints a vivid picture against the backdrop of the wider state of affairs of that era, from baseball to national events. I came away with an understanding of how baseball operated in a more innocent time and how it was about to irrevocably change. And I learned a lot of details about my favorite Mets players from my youth. My only wish was that the book included more artwork, including color photos.

This is the perfect book for a Mets fan suffering through a horrible season. The author perfectly mixes game recaps with interviews. I liked that he didn't dwell on the sociological significance of the season or related world events, instead emphasizing how the Mets won the Series. Even if you think that you know everything about the '69 Mets, you will learn something. I loved this book.

Any book about the Metsies will hold my attention, but his present day interviews with the players and coaches make this a very special book.

I am a Baseball Historian and this is one book that I truly treasure and can read over and over again.

I've read a few books about my favorite baseball team without ever discovering one I'd call my clear favorite. But there is no doubt this is the happiest, easiest book I know about featuring the New York Mets.Established in 1962, the Mets had losing records in each of their first seven seasons, mired at the bottom of the National League for all but two of them. But a change was slowly building in the organization, with a firm but flexibly minded manager having taken stock of his young and talented team. They would be called "The Miracle Mets," though one theme of this book is the players, or at least most of them, don't see it as a "miracle.""Our winning the pennant and the Series was not as complicated as people sometimes make it out to be," explained pitcher Tom Seaver, who won the Cy Young Award in 1969. "We were the best team in baseball, and that's why we won.""There was nothing miraculous about it," shortstop Bud Harrelson said. "We went out each day with the idea of winning, and most of the time we won."Cohen's 1988 account of the Mets' 1969 season includes original interviews with 23 of the 25 players who were on the Mets' postseason roster. When he first researched the book in 1986, all of them were not only still alive, but two of them, Seaver and pitcher Nolan Ryan, were still on player rosters. Another, Harrelson, was a coach on what would become in October 1986 the only other Mets team to win it all.The book is well-organized that way, with Cohen alternating between an account of the season as it unfolded and interviews with the Mets who share their thoughts about how it happened and what they were feeling in often unguarded and charming ways. The team had great pitching, solid fielding, and hitting that wasn't spectacular but very timely. The only voice really missing here is manager Gil Hodges, who died in 1972. Cohen's interviews make clear the players saw him as the difference maker, especially during the regular season when the Mets came from behind to catch the early-surging Chicago Cubs. The Cubs' manager, Leo Durocher, pressed too much and his team wore down from the strain. Hodges knew how to push the right buttons at the right times without taxing his players so much."I think Gil would have won with the Cubs in '69," claimed catcher J. C. Martin, who played for both managers after being traded to the Cubs in 1970. "I think it was the manager that made the difference."The book reads a bit thin in places, especially when it gets to the post-season. Cohen says he spent a lot of time reading the New York Times day-by-day accounts of the games; I wish he had given more attention to what the city tabloids were saying, especially The Daily News, which was the heart of sports journalism in New York City then. But if you want to get beyond the shots of sliding outfield catches and tickertape parades to find out what the Mets were all about that summer, this is a book worth reading. If you are a Mets fan like me, the story gets better when you read it more than once.

I didn't mind the content of the book, if you READ it. The audible book is absolutely terrible. The narrator, Ian Eugene Ryan, doesn't know how to pronounce the names of most of the players, many of whom are in the Hall of Fame.. His pronunciation of some basic English words is like a fifth grader. I don't know how the author or the publisher can allow this to happen. Doesn't anyone edit these books? It really made a great story a very bad listen.
