They Drew as They Pleased - Vol 3: The Hidden Art of Disney's Late Golden Age, by Didier Ghez, is a must have, for animation fans as well as Disney fans! This third volume is chock full of some incredible, never-before-seen artwork created by the Disney studio artists in the 1940s and as the studio prepared for films like the breakthrough Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. There are chapters on artists such as Eduardo Sola Franco, Jack miller and several others. With preliminary sketches, background paintings, first hand commentary and artists' diary entries, we see the great momentum that Disney inspired in his artists. Much of this art never appeared on screen but made the Disney films some of the most important films ever made. Walt's Character Model Department is showcased, with the maquettes of characters and props that would be used in the films. The book is a meticulous record of just a portion of the Disney's legacy!

Next to the Story Department, The Character Model Department was also the heart of creativity at the Disney Studio. John Canemaker wrote a chapter in his book "Before The Animation Begins" about the inner workings of the department and the key personnel. A book on this topic really needed to be written and Didier Ghez was just the person to do it. Didier had told us that this would be the best entry in the series and for good reason.In addition to giving more in depth insight and understanding to the origins, functions, and personnel who worked in the Character Model Department, we're also treated to some insight on the development of features that were shelved for several years. Many dedicated fans know that most of the Disney features released in the late 40's and 50's were actually in production by the start of the 40's, but shelved due to economic setbacks and WWII. There are many model sheets and story sketches from those features and the features released during that timeframe. Chief among them are character model sheets for Peter Pan that are dated 1940. Michael Sporn posted those on his blog over ten years ago, but its nice to have them in published form. One of my favorite pieces is for a proposed Goofy short "How To Become Hep", in which Goofy learns the then current dance trends. Complete with Goofy in a zoot suit. That surely would have been an interesting period piece from Disney.What would have been cool to see in this volume, is previously unpublished art from Joe Grant, one of the most creative and inspired artists and storytellers ever. As the head of this department, his contributions are especially worth noting.This series has gathered lots of concept art from the Disney studio, several unseen by the public. What would be cool to see is an additional series, which shows concept art by film and even give further insight on unproduced films.This volume covers a wide array of feature films and unproduced films. This and the new information presented make it a must have for the Disney connoisseur.

This is another gorgeous entry in the They Drew As They Pleased series, this time looking at the Character Modeling Department at the Disney Studios, which officially existed from 1938-1942, though the artists may have been with the company before or after that span.As with the other volumes, Didier Ghez presents an introduction to the artists' group at the studio and what their general focus was, followed by brief biographies of a half dozen artists and examples of their work. From what I understand, the Character Modeling Department was tasked primarily with inventing characters and creating artistic inspiration that would be distilled into animation-friendly drawings. This is in contrast with the Story Department concept artists profiled in volume 2 of the series (1940s - Part One), who worked with a lot of mood pieces, background art, and more general character inspiration. I felt like the introduction to what exactly the Modeling Department was supposed to do was a little confusing, and like I was missing some vital background information on the politics and organizational structure of the Disney Studios, which is not something I felt when reading the other volumes, and feels a bit strange because I'm not unfamiliar with the topic. I think, though, this is at least partly because the department itself wasn't entirely set on a single task, as is demonstrated in the biographies for how the artists were hired in. That the lack of clear purpose is historical and not a lack in Ghez's writing is supported by the artwork included. It is primarily character studies, with occasional further concept art to develop the characters.I was a little disappointed that there are only a couple photos of the maquette sculptures that were created, even though one artist's profile specifically calls him out as being a sculptor, and the maquettes were something of an invention by the group. I was also disappointed that none of the women in the department were featured, even though there were at least two explicitly named and included in the men's profiles, but that could be explained by space constraints and their relatively shorter time or smaller repository of work in the archives. Three or four of the artists were very close friends, they even shared a house together for a while, and it was nice to read about each of them, but that does take space away from Fini and Sheila.I love this series for the quality of the books, for the interesting look at how artists' unique skills and styles fit into an animation studio's needs, and also for the wonderful artwork. It is as much an art book about artists and their paying-the-bills jobs as it is about Disney history. In fact, I forgot that I had won a copy through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program and bought my own when I happened to see it was newly released, because I found the previous installments to be such excellent work. Despite I would have liked to see a more expanded look at the Character Modeling Department artists and role, this third volume continues to be excellent, and I hope that Ghez will continue with a fourth volume that picks up after the mass layoff that ended most of these artists' careers at the Studio.

About the Author

Nick Verreos grew up in Venezuela as the child of a Greek-American Diplomat father and a glamorous Panamanian mother. During these early years, he began his love affair with fashion, but always considered it more of a hobby instead of a potential career. After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science, he eventually decided to pursue his true love: fashion. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) from the Advanced Fashion Design Program and worked for 10 years in the fashion industry before launching his own clothing line, NIKOLAKI, in 2001. Celebrities such as Heidi Klum, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood and Beyonce have all worn his designs. As a TV personality, he has enjoyed great success as a red carpet fashion expert and correspondent for E! Entertainment, Style Network, NBC and CNN International. I enjoy listening to Nick and following his lessons on ine; it makes me feel as if l am back in the classroom. Further, it gave me a clearer understanding of drawing the "croquis" for sketching. Nick's instructions are very clear and it is such fun to listen and follow. I have purchased his book, "A Passion for Fashion"; it is super! The book is challenging me to get back into pattern making and sewing...l am a big fan of NICK!!

Interesting read though it resembled more a rough autobiography than a book with fashion tips. While those were also present I had bought it under the impression that was more in line with the youtube turorials where the recommendation had come from.

Informative and inspiring. It must be a lot better if there's less personal narrative.

What a Gem, love Nick to pieces, taught me so much. love, love, love and more love.

Some great business and personal principles in this book. Not as good reading as its successor, but still a good book to have in your business library.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Some books I read are entertaining, some are inspiring, some are educational, and some are life changing. This book has been life changing for me. I have purchased several copies that I have given as Christmas presents and plan to give some as wedding gifts as well.Some of my favorite quotes are:"We can treat our children fairly but if our hearts are warring toward them while we’re doing it, they won’t think they’re being treated fairly at all....As important as behavior is most problems at home, at work, and in the world are not failures of strategy but failures of way of being.""We first need to find our way out of the internal wars that are poisoning our thoughts, feelings, and attitudes toward others. If we can’t put an end to the violence within us, there is no hope for putting an end to the violence without.""And we have seen how one warring heart invites more "object seeing" and warring in others."...."No one can force a warring heart upon us. When our hearts go to war, we ourselves have chosen it.""Because when I betray myself I create within myself a new need-a need that causes me to see others accusingly, a need that causes me to care about something other than truth and solutions, and a need that invites others to do the same in response.""As painful as it is to receive contempt from another, it is more debilitating by far to be filled with contempt for another.""A heart at war needs enemies to justify its warring. It needs enemies and mistreatment more than it wants peace.""Whenever we need to be justified, anything that will give us justification will immediately take on exaggerated importance in our life. I can't say enough about this book. I am a clergyperson and it was recommended by our Bishop. Somewhat reluctantly, I decided to read what I anticipated would be a boring book. I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is set in a two day seminar for parents whose "Problem" children are enrolled in a behavior modification program. That setting and the dialogue as people processed the material kept me interested initially. As I got into it more, I no longer needed that construct. I recommended the book to our book club and our members were unanimous in their praise of the book. When we came together we were all eager to share what we had learned and how we could see it applying in our lives. We decided that it would be great if we could engage more of our congregation in discussion of this book over a longer period of time. I purchased the kindle edition and my only concern about that is that it was difficult to read some of the diagrams. I found myself copying them into a notebook for quick reference. I am fairly certain that I will also purchase a hard copy of the book because it is a book that I think would be worth owning in hard form. I have recommended it to several other people and can easily imagine reading this book multiple times. The principles apply all across the spectrum of human relationships and situations.

I love books written in story form that teach and change the way we look at the world. This is such a book. I love that you got to experience the change of heart of each person in the story and that your own heart is changed. I am trying to change the way I feel about myself and others and too look at everyone with love. I have a long road but I really feel this book has helped open a door.My absolute favorite quote from the book is " Acts of self -betrayal such as those I've mentioned are so common they are almost ho-hum. But when we dig a little deeper, we discover something fascinating about self-betrayal". He looked around at the group." A choice to betray myself". he said "is a choice to go to war".I have learned that my heart has been at war for a long time, with myself mostly so it reaches out to all around me. It stops us from seeing people as human and they become objects or other negative things. I like to remind myself that everyone is my bother or sister and we are all connected. Would I yell at my brother if I didn't get my way at a restaurant, I wouldn't, but if you look at that waiter as an object not giving you what you want you might yell. Not because you are a jerk but because your heart is at war and you don't know another way. I loved the justification boxes and will be studying those for a while I don't want to fall back into those boxes.This was an awesome book and now I add to my prayers that my heart be a heart of peace not war.If you liked this book you might like Zero Limits and Remembering Wholeness and You can Heal Your life.

George won the Harry Hay award in 2005 for his decades of inspiration to young activists and writers. He has received numerous literary and theatrical awards, including a 2008 Lambda Literary Foundation book award for his contributions to Return to the Caffe Cino, published by Moving Finger Press.George began writing during the Great Depression, trying to tell his story in prose: a story of abandonment by his mother, the death of his Communist father, years in a Catholic orphanage, and brutality at the hands of a homophobic society. After writing five very bad novels he wrote a play with a gay theme. Insecure about his lack of formal education, he had discovered an art form in which he didn t have to worry about his grammar. With excellent reviews in the Village Voice and the New York Times for his Daddy Violet; a world of creativity opened up to him. George moved to San Francisco in 1980. George Birimisa is one of the pioneers of alternative theater in the U.S. It used to be called "off-off-Broadway," since the movement started in New York City, as a reaction to the commercialization of Broadway. Starting around 1960, low-budget productions of experimental plays with defiantly unconventional themes began to be pop up around New York City in impromptu performance venues like coffee houses, church halls, clubs, lofts. Birimisa was one of the emerging playwrights on this scene --and one of the first to deal openly with homosexuality, in his "Daddy Violet," produced at the now-legendary Caffe Cino in the mid-60s. Among his admirers was Tennessee Williams.This anthology includes his best-known plays, a number of his short works about his life -- and profiles by people who know him best. One of the most vivid threads is about the time Birimisa spent in the U.S. Navy during World War II.For those who have no idea that the Sixties were about way more than hippies and LSD, this anthology plunges the reader into the social flavors and language and groundbreaking creativity of the times. It's well worth the read.

This is amazing to look through. The art is stellar and the lore is captivating. While not all faeries were given proper descriptions, you could clearly tell their characteristics just by looking at them. There is some partial nudity, but nothing beyond that. The book is pretty big, so it can't actually fit in my shelf; that's a bummer.The odd thing about the book is the way they chose to divide the Good Faeries from the Bad Faeries. Instead of seamlessly going from front to back (as usual), you actually have to flip the book around. This makes it very inconvenience for me, since my desk space is rather limited.

Froud's art is, as always, tremendously beautiful. There is a uniqueness to his work which makes it exceptionally poignant and unforgettable. He, along with Tony DiTerlizzi, is one of the only artists I know of that have such talent. The reason I'm only giving this four stars, though, is that I was expecting it to be more of a field guide of the Faery world. It's more a collection of Froud's art than anything else. The writing is rather light, and not very fleshed out. Some images don't have an explanation as to what they are representing, and when they do, it is often only a few lines that doesn't tell the reader much. If you're more interested in the art aspect than the lore of the Faery world, or a huge fan of Froud like myself, then buy this book!

Ordered this and got it promptly shipped. Was absolutely beautiful, the book in perfect condition. I adore Brian Froud's work! I would suggest that if you're buying this for children that you understand that many of the faeries are in the nude, so if you are a bit more on the conservative side, please take that into consideration. My family has excitedly perused the pages and begun their journey on learning everything from water fay to faeries named Grig, and love the artwork exceedingly. Mr. Froud's enchanting prose to accompany the fanciful and whimsical artwork, allowing us a peek into his mind and state as he created this world of faeries for us, has been really enjoyable. Highly recommend this to anyone looking to learn more of the world of the Fae!

I love the art of Brian Froud and this book does not disappoint his fans or readers who seek to learn about the many types of fae-beings he has imagined. His voice even alternates in his writing with the voice of faeries from the realm. The book defines Good Faeries and Bad Faeries and there is a section in the middle that delights! The Good Faerie can be turned upside down to see a completely different (probably bad) faerie, and vice versa as the Bad Faeries section approaches the Good Faeries. There is some nudity among his fae-beings. The drawings and paintings are beautifully rendered and informative.

Brian Froud has found his place an authority on the fae for good reason. This was a fun read with numerous depictions of the faerys populating Mr. Froud's world. I had to take one star because I began to notice that so many of his faery's looked so much alike. After all, if they each have the own agenda and culture why would they mostly have the same body type and facial features. I decided to accept it as a slice of faerys inhabiting Mr. Froud's world.

I love the artwork - it brings back alot of happy memories to have this book again. I had it years ago when I was 14 but my sister let a friend borrow it and I never saw it again. So it's exactly as I remember. Love it!

This book is sensational. I'm a huge Froud fan to begin with, but this book is by far...my ultimate favorite. It is put together so ingeniously, the writing and images leave you with a haunting feeling that is reminiscent of childhood imagination and pure Faery Magic. Will induce a case of the goosebumps each time you flip through it's pages, if you believe in Faeries, then you'll know what I mean ;-) Good Faeries/Bad Faeries is presented in such a unique and imaginative way that you cannot help yourself but to get lost within it's amazing World of Wonder.

An amazing book filled with mysterious faeries both good and bad. The art work is beautiful. The folklore makes you think of a time of magical beings. This leads you to wonder … Could I see them today? Are they there just beyond the veil?

This is an excellent resource for those who need some brushing up on algebra skills AND for those currently taking algebra. The step by step solutions are a big plus for students just starting out. For old has-beens like myself this is a great text to keep up with my skills even though the chances of me ever using them at this stage of my journey in life are next to nil. I just solve a few problems daily for the heck of it. This is a far better investment for me than blowing the amount at Starbucks or other such frivolities.An excellent resource at a reasonable price.

I found book to be nothing special. The majority of the problems are way to easy and can be solved using standard solutions for quadratic equations. Overall level is second grade highschool (not sure about other countries but that is 16 years old students in Serbia). Could be that I expected a bit more challenging problems.The one thing that really bothered me about the style of writing was that when the solution is calculated using algebraic methods there would be "proof" of results by ways of substituting the solution into the original problem and stating "the solution holds" - well of course it holds when you just used proper methods to obtain it! It kinda undermines the authority of the writer like he is not sure about the methods and maths he just used so let's test the solution "just in case"...Again, nothing special here, it is early highschool level.

Better off just with the free stuff off the Internet.

I really enjoyed this book. I got it, not because I'm some kind of math "geek", but just because I thought it could be interesting, and it definitely didn't let me down. It was very interesting and informative if you have any interest in math, and obviously algebra. I have to say it's not for a beginner, but if you've at least taken even high school algebra or higher you should be able to follow along and learn some new info and skills.

Good challenging problems. Let me know how rusty I was. The solutions were very clear. Was able to solve about half of them correctly, while the other half came back eventually after going over the solutions. Was a lot of fun. Hope he writes another one.

This is a great book for either developing good conceptual understanding and technical problem-solving skills or maintaining them. The problems are a good selection of both straightforward equations/inequalities/systems of equations, or word problems leading to them. The level of challenge is consistent and a successful solution requires focus and facility with numerical techniques. Moreover, the solutions are detailed, the explanations clear, and the conceptual clarifications important. Overall, a great book and highly recommended for advanced students.

I just got the book today. After looking through it,there are definitely hard and easy problems. It’s a good book if you want to review or just do for fun.

I love this little book! Lots of practice problems and their solutions. Sneak a little fun into any situation no matter where you go- paper, pencil, and an algebra problem! Fun, fun. Fun!!!
