Caribbean volcanoes have produced some of history s most noted eruptions. Early last century, the 1902 eruption of Montagne Pelée on Martinique focused scientific attention on pyroclastic flows that devastated St. Pierre, and the town was the site of a recent International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth s Interior (IAVCEI) conference on the centennial of the eruption. Also in 1902 was the lesser known, but simultaneous devastating eruption of La Soufrière volcano, St. Vincent. Two other eruptions at soufrière ( sulphur ) volcanoes caused major economic disruption. A minor eruption at Soufrière de la Guadeloupe that did not proceed beyond the phreatic stage prompted the long-term evacuation of the island s capital city, with severe economic impact. The recent eruption of Soufrière Hills Volcano on Montserrat destroyed the capital city of Plymouth and underscored the devastating impact of eruptions on small volcanic islands. This volume, Volcanic Hazard Atlas of the Lesser Antilles, was created at the request of public officials in planning departments and those responsible for disaster preparedness at the time of a 2001 USAID-funded workshop on Volcanic and Seismic Hazards in the Eastern Caribbean organised by the Seismic Research Unit of The University of West Indies. The public officials and volcanologists attending the workshop recognised the value of a comprehensive summary of the volcanic histories and attendant hazards of these active volcanoes, and the project was subsequently endorsed by IAVCEI. Each of the dozen chapters summarizes the volcanic history of an island or, in the case of Kick em Jenny, a submarine volcanic centre, which also has an interesting sidebar discussing its unusual name. Past activity, including historical and radiometrically dated eruptions, is summarized, along with notable seismic swarms and the location and characteristics of geothermal areas. Discussion of hazards from specific volcanic processes, such as pyroclastic flows and surges associated with lava dome growth, are used to generate a colour-coded hazard map for each volcano. These data are then synthesized to provide an Integrated Volcanic Hazard Zone map showing areas of low to very high hazard. A bibliography provides a resource that includes citations for difficult to obtain unpublished reports, some of which were commissioned by regional governmental officials and only recently made available to the scientific community outside the West Indies. The colour used throughout the Atlas, including graphics, photos of the island s volcanoes and their deposits, and location and hazard maps, provides a visually appealing summary of the volcanology of the Lesser Antilles arc. The Volcanic Hazard Atlas of the Lesser Antilles provides an up-to-date summary of the current understanding of the evolution of West Indies volcanoes. It is pertinent to a broad audience ranging from island residents wanting to learn about the nearby volcanoes, to volcanologists from other regions interested in these impressive volcanoes. Jan Lindsay Jan Lindsay is co-leader of the IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth s Interior) Commission for the Mitigation of Volcanic Disasters. She is a former member of the Seismic Research Unit and is currently based at the Department of Geology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand as an Honorary Research Associate. She holds a BSc and MSc in Geology from the University of Auckland and a PhD from the GeoForschungsZentrum in Potsdam, Germany. Her recent work has focused on understanding the volcanic history and hazards of the islands of the Lesser Antilles arc, and she has a particular interest in the islands of Dominica and Saint Lucia as well as the submarine volcano Kick em Jenny. Richard Robertson Richard Robertson is currently the Geologist and Acting Head of the Seismic Research Unit of The University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. He holds a BSc in Geology from The University of the West Indies, an MPhil from the University of Leeds and a PhD from The University of the West Indies. His research interests include the impact of volcanism on human society and focus strongly on the assessment and communication of volcanic hazard and risk and on the integration of techniques used in volcano monitoring. John Shepherd John Shepherd is the former Head of the Seismic Research Unit and Professor of Geophysics at The University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad. This is the most comprehensive book of volcanoes in he Caribbean. It goes into detail of all volcanoes in all the islands in the Lesser Antilles and it is unlikely that any other publication will be able to match or contribute more information. I have visited many volcanoes in the Caribbean including Soufriere in St. Vincent, Soufriere in Saint Lucia and many in Dominica.. The book is a first class publication and considered to be an excellent buy at that price.

I expected explosive action and a fast-paced plot from the cover, but the inside was a sore disappointment. The characterization of the lead male character was quite poor. The plot was non existent...just a series of unrelated pictures strung together.

I bought this having little knowledge of php and mysql other than what the combo is used for and what I wanted it to do for me and the projects I had in the works. The progression, for anyone with a working knowledge of programming/coding, is great; there is enough detail and examples for drilling down but it moves at a fairly quick pace. That said, knowing other prog languages and having experience will help greatly, mostly from the standpoint of being able to look at all the code for the examples and being able to extract the theory of what's going in order to adapt it to your own situation. A true beginner will most likely have difficulty with this, but the extensive examples are where the true power lies with these type of books. The syntax and semantics are the referential part (for people who already know how to code), and are also contained within this book, but being able to design an application requires some skill and insight which is hard for a book to teach/impart. Practice and experimentation are the best way.In summary: This book is great, if you know how to code and want to learn how to use php and mysql to develop web-based applications and sites I highly recommend it.

Awesome Book. Would recommend for anyone learning any of the languages they have books for. I own their PHP/MySQL, HTML5/CSS3, and their Javascript/JQuery books. Cannot say enough good about them. Murach's is definitely the way to go.

The book flows very nicely, with gradual progression of concepts and solid use of example code.It is a great resource for teaching yourself how to make websites that are easy to hack. There should be an entire 2-4 pages devoted to the subject of SQL Injection. Instead, you get it mentioned very briefly in the section about prepared statements, with a suggestion that more about such attacks can be found "on the internet". If you're actually planning to code PHP/mySQL websites for anything more than academic purpose, handling the possibility of injection attacks is essential.I'm just glad a I had an expert friend that was here to be shocked at the code I was writing based on my experiences with this book. You can use this book as long as you have someone to fill in the gap on the sql injections.

I must state that normally i hate learning anything about programming. I'd much rather do anything design. Most tech books about programming never keep my interest and seem pretty difficult to read but something about this author's style allows this book to be an easy read for me. I am using this for a PHP course for a web development degree and This allows me to get through the chapters. Some of the chapter may seem repetitive to some but for beginners, this is just what we need. The book assumes no prior knowledge and again, this is great for beginners. Those just needing basics to start with PHP if they programmed before can probably pick up with chapter 2 or 3.

If I had been using PHP for 5+ years, or already know another programming language, this book might have been useful then. For an introductory book to the material, the book assumes way too much about your understanding. It is quite difficult to follow, and the exercises are a lot to unpack before even understanding what needs to be done. Every one of my classmates have had similar issues with the book as well.Again, it may be useful for more advanced users, but I would never recommend it for your first PHP book.

I like the book so far! Great tutorials! Gotta have some real-world projects to be able to grasp the concepts, and this book delivers.

Murach's texts are excellent for the professional programmer who is in the process of acquiring a new skill or wants a quick reference with code samples for common daily development tasks. A programmer whose role is mostly data processing would be well served by this text plus a complete PHP and SQL reference. Murach's works would not fit well in an academic environment, because they lack the necessary material on computing fundamentals such as algorithm analysis. But they are an excellent choice for a mature student of computing who needs basic training in a specific area.

Best PHP reference manual ever. Still using it after buying it for school. Bought others, but this one is the best by far.

WELL. First of all. I am 17. I'm a junior in high school. I KNOW.I took the ACT using this book as my only prep work. No tutors. No classes. I learned this stuff BY MESELF!!! XD!! Much interesting detail but flawed with too much on events west of Mississippi, bad Stonewall bios and excessive coverage of film and TV. Most offensive was comment about Grant as one of our worst presidents- Grant's "presidency " was one of the worst because Grant trusted people to a fault but the man Grant was way ahead of history on civil rights and humane treatment of the Indian tribes. The more I have read about Grant the more I am convinced he has been underrated as a critical contributor to the success in bringing the war to an end as well reconstruction.

A lot of good information, and insight. I liked the info on Jefferson Davis, and his relationships with his generals. I especially liked the insight on Joseph E. Johnston, its a no holds barred beat down. I have only seen historians\authors destroy McClellan in the same way, but again great insight. As indicated in the title, the book gets to the core of some of the issues, of the Confederacy. I also love how it handles the myths of how the Confederacy could have won, by showing the potential Union reaction.Now for the bad. It get way too bogged down with the Trans-Mississippi Theater. It has typical General Lee hero worship. After seeing how bad his peers were, maybe it is deserved, but after just reading another book that contained a valid, and very critical military analysis of General Lee, it just seems out of place in a myth\reality book. Part 4 of this book, which is about Stonewall Jackson is just a mess. it hints at some insights, but never revels anything, and leaves you hanging. It does not even mention the controversy of how Jackson got his nickname. For those that don't know it is believed to have been an insult, because Jackson stood like a stonewall, instead of moving up, and helping another brigade which was being slaughtered. Again Jackson's lack of initiative, and tendency to blindly follow orders is hinted at, but again no new insight. Then it goes off on a tangent about the historical accuracy of Civil war movies, and ends up in left field.

The book provides a lot of information on the politics in the Confederacy during and, to some extent, after the Civil War. The relationship between Jefferson Davis and this generals was interesting. The book ends with a review of movies and TV show made about the war. Some of the myth busting seems to be based on the authors own authority, but much of it is documented.

Very factual but about 2.5. Times longer than needed.Too much repition. Not what I expected.

Enjoyed the second half of this book.Thought it had a slow start with some repetition. Once involved with specific arguments(states’rights) and individual characters,the pace picks up.The Hollywood reaction chapter is a winner!

Very interesting. Is it the first book about the truth? Why are the masses mislead by politicians and journalists caught for suckers even when families war amongst itself.

Any serious reader of Civil War history cannot claim to be unless he or she has read William C. Davis, and this book continues on par with his previous endeavors. The Cause Lost is not heavily researched, and it need not be. Instead, the books contains, what I would call, several essays dealing with all the ponders and “what ifs” of any seasoned Civil War buff.I once heard a “myth” that Davis only writes one draft, then submits to publication. (I put myth in quotations as a not so subtle nod to a chapter in this book). True or not, it remains to me believable, for his research and narrative come through with a simple brilliance and sound logic that would seem as if he is dissecting all the complexities of this complex war to any casual listener, and they walk away getting it.
