A former wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, Leland Melvin is an engineer and NASA astronaut. He served on the space shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist and was named the NASA Associate Administrator for Education in October 2010. He also served as the cochair on the White House’s Federal Coordination in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Task Force, developing the nation’s five-year STEM education plan. He is the host of the Lifetime show Child Genius and a judge for ABC’s BattleBots. He holds four honorary doctorates and has received the NFL Player Association Award of Excellence. He lives in Lynchburg, Virginia.

I had the honor to meet him and hear him speak about his life and experiences.This book is more than the memoirs of an astronaut - it's a lesson about the importance of persistence and passion. It is also a great read. I purchased the Young Readers edition for my grandson and another copyfor his 4th grade teacher. They were both thrilled.

An excellent look at how setbacks can turn into success in people's lives if they continue to work hard and dream. Leland Melvin's life is an inspiration to all, no matter what their age. The STEM section is a fun way to engage students.

A delightful book by a real astronaut about his adventures in space. Melvin has taken his adult book and designed it for the young reader. It is the perfect book for any young reader.

This interest was more s after finding out she was moving back to Catalina Cove if onky he could convince her that a relationship between them would not lead to scandal and disaster. Take the journey into this story of love, deciet, betrayal, forgiveness, secrets, and scandal. You will be amazed, appalled, and awed. Keep the amazing stories coming Mrs Jackson.

I'm so glad that Vashti found out the truth in the end, was reunited with her daughters, and found sweet love. I had a strong feeling that Kia was going to be Vashti's daughter but it was a total shock that Jade was as well but at least she had already established a relationship with her. Vashti's parents were so cruel and I'm glad that Vashti had Sawyer to stick by her side through it all. I can't wait to read Kaegan and Bryce's story.

I have always enjoyed the creative, genius writing of Brenda Jackson--since "Delaney's Desert Sheik". Each new continuity line she develops has me anticipating more!This story had so many elements that reach the heart--for the young and old, and addresses real-life issues, like teenage pregnancy, divorce, dementia, and reuniting adopted children.It was emotional and hopeful all at the same time. Who wouldn't love to see a woman reunited with her child(ren), who thought they were gone? Who wouldn't love to see a widowed man, who mourned his wife and son, learn that he does have grandchildren to dote on and leave his legacy to?And of course, no one can dispute that Mrs. Jackson definitely knows romance, and the relationship between Sawyer and Vashti was nothing short of brilliantly written.This is definitely in my re-read library--like all of Mrs. Jackson's books!

Vashti left Fl at an early age. Her heart and spirit were broken at 16. She had a marriage that stripped her emotions as well. However, because of her aunt's death in her hometown and a speeding ticket led her to truth's that had been kept from her.Read in this wonderful book how two souls that needed love found it in a most unlikely way. Read how lies that never needed to be told nearly destroyed lives.Ms. Jackson has woven a tale that has you cheering at the end for truth and celebrating love and restoration.

WOW! This had to be one of the best series starters I have read in a LONG time. Catalina Cove is a quaint town an hour outside of New Orleans. The most influential resident, Reid Lacroix, wants the town to stay as it is, while others wish to move it into the 20th century. Vashti left Catalina Cove because she could no longer handle the small town censure after her teenage pregnancy. Sawyer is the new sheriff in Catalina Cove. These three lives become entwined and with Catalina Cove as the backdrop what other stories lie within?

I couldn't get enough of Vashti and Sawyer! I knew immediately part of the hidden truth and the other part was a question until it was mentioned by Sawyer and the investigator.... But the level Vashti's parents went was sadly not unheard of, but still very sad and heartbreaking.... I'm just glad that everybody was happy and moving on to happily ever after by the books end... I just cant wait to read Ray's book next although I thought it would've been KG and Bryce. I'm waiting for their book!

Vashti and Sawyer are both passionate people who tried to fight their strong sexual attraction. Just a look across the room and sparks were flying. You could feel the hot chemistry. Once they accept their attractions, the journey begins to let love in. Along the way, surprises from the past come to hurt their hearts. Sawyer's strong compassion for family, push him to fight for love even when Vashti loses hope. As you read,you will see love does conquer all. Ms. Jackson has once again left you wanting more. I could not put the kindle down. Great story.

The “infidel” is David Hume and “the professor” is Adam Smith, two Scottish philosophers whose influence in shaping the early American republic cannot be overestimated. The fact that Hume and Smith were good friends makes for a fascinating story and is a good reason to read this book. The author, Dennis C. Rasmussen, an associate professor of political science at Tufts University, has done a bang-up job in researching and writing it. My qualm is he doesn’t go far enough in explaining their influence on America’s Founding Fathers, particularly it’s two most far-reaching thinkers—Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. What Hume and Smith did was order up a new world, which took form as the United States. More about that in a moment.Hume was born in Edinburgh and spoke with a decided Scottish burr, while Smith, who was born a few miles to the north, in Kirkcaldy, Fife, did not. Both were highly gifted students. Hume attended Edinburgh University, but did not graduate. Smith attended Glasgow University, and did. Both suffered temporary breakdowns as a result of overstudy. Hume did not teach, and spent most of his adult life writing, which came easily to him. Smith taught at Glasgow U, and struggled with the pen. Neither married (few great philosophers do), although Hume did fall madly in love with a lady of Parisian society but ended the relationship fearing it would draw him away from his true passion, study and writing. Hume wrote about human behavior, ethics, religion, political theory, economic theory, and a stellar six-volume history of England. Smith wrote two books, one concerning political theory, and one concerning economic theory.At various times, Hume and Smith called London home, and spent considerable time in Paris, where Hume and later Smith were the toast of the town. Hume was born in 1711 and died in 1776, age 65. Smith was born 1723 and died in 1790, age 67. Hume did not believe in God (thus the sobriquet, “infidel”) while Smith presumably did. They maintained a lively correspondence over the years, of which about half of their letters survive (most of Smith’s letter were burned on his instruction after his death). Compared with other Enlightenment writers, particularly Parisian “philosophes”, neither Hume nor Smith were radicals. They did not advocate grand schemes for radically restructuring society. They embraced the benefits of the rule of law, limited government, religious tolerance, freedom of expression, private property, and commerce, while insisting that necessary societal changes should be implemented in a gradual, measured way. Unlike revolutions to come, this was exactly what the American Revolution ushered in--gradual rather than sweeping change.“The Infidel and the Professor” is almost as much about Hume’s and Smith’s friendship as it is about their books. The author devotes approximately two chapters to Hume’s writings and two chapters to Smith’s: one to “The Theory of Moral Sentiments” and one to “The Wealth of Nations.” Of the two, “The Theory of Moral Sentiments” was more popular in Smith’s day. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Hume’s and Smith’s books were widely studied in America by the Founding Fathers, which brings us back to Hamilton and Madison. Thanks to the scholarship of historian Douglass Adair, we know that Madison was greatly influenced by the political theories of David Hume. Writes Adair: “It was David Hume’s speculations on the ‘Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth’ . . . that most stimulated James Madison’s thought on factions.” He goes so far as to say Madison had a copy of Hume’s book at his side while writing Federalist No. 10. For his economic ideas, Madison drew upon Smith’s “The Wealth of Nations.” According to historian Forrest McDonald, it was the opposite with Hamilton. For his economic theories, Hamilton drew more upon Hume’s economic theories, and for his political theories drew more upon Smith’s “Theory of Moral Sentiments.” Unfortunately, Rasmussen does not discuss in any depth the actual influence Hume and Smith had on America's founding. That said, I enjoyed his book, and recommend it to anyone desiring to know more about two of the greatest and most influential writers of the 18th century Enlightenment. To learn more about their impact on America’s founding, I suggest “Novus Ordo Seclorum: The Intellectual Origins of the Constitution” by Forrest McDonald; “Explaining America: The Federalist” by Garry Wills; and “Fame and the Founding Fathers” by Douglass Adair.

A superior introduction to the lives and thinking of two great men and two dear friends, David Hume and Adam Smith. Hume was the unusual happy philosopher, while Smith was the unusual economist not beholden to dense, obtuse mathematical calculations.Professor Rasmussen writes clearly, knowledgeably, and with grace. He has produced a lively book that should be of interest to any reader desiring to learn about Hume and Adam and the motivations, impulses, and struggles over basic questions of life that are common to us all and to the societies in which we live. Is free trade by a nation an unalloyed good? Is faith in God necessary for a good life?As an aside, I recommend "Adam Smith: His Life. Thought, and Legacy" (2016) edited by Ryan Patrick Hanley for those seeking more about Adam Smith.

Yes, this book requires more time and thought from the reader than most. But, the effort is rewarded brilliantly. The story of the long friendship of these two giants of political philosophy is engaging and makes me envious. How marvelous it would have been to spend a few evenings with them.Nevertheless, the real joy of reading The Infidel and the Professor is being reacquainted with work of these extraordinary men and inspired to take down long-shelved volumes or their works and revisit them.Dennis Rasmussen's books reminds us of how important works of Hume, Adams and their contemporaries are to our 21st century political and economic systems. Their thoughts and words are harbingers of today's headlines. Our politicians should all be required to read Hume and Adams (as well as a few others of their ilk). Since that's unlikely, perhaps they could be convinced to read The Infidel and the Professor. It would improve them immeasurably.

This is a wonderful book...elegantly written, very well researched and a useful and original guide(as far as I can tell) to each of their ideas...I would give it to anyone approaching either man for the first time as well as those of us who are more familiar with their work...

This book offers a unique and delightful look at the Silurian and Devonian periods, suitable for school children but including some funny bits and cool facts that will help adults learn or recall the main events of this pivotal time in our planet's history. It also is the only book I've seen for kids that provides some information on my favorite predator, Dunkleosteus, incidentally playing it conservative and assigning a length of 6 meters where some books say 8 and a few old ones say 10. There are short, clear explanations of everything from the creation of soil to the adaptations needed for plants and animals to invade the dry land environment. Recommended to my by no less than paleontologists Matt Mossbrucker and Dr. Robert Bakker, this is just a terrific book: order one for your kid's library and another for yourself. Rumors of Existence

This short book by National Geographic introduces the reader to the diverse forms of the original plant and animal life that originally appeared on Earth. The book starts with the Ordovician period, and ends with the Permian period before the dinosaurs appeared. The principal topics covered are the appearance of fishes, the rise of bony fishes, the greening of the Earth's surface, and the appearance on land of the first arthropods and tetrapods. The level and detail of text is appropriate for anyone above 6 years old. This book contains no photographs, only color illustrations and an occasional graph or timeline. The illustrations of the plants and animals are not overly detailed, and match the style and detail of the cover art. The book is interesting to read, and I myself enjoyed reading it as much as my children

I was immediately taken with this wonderful book. Although intended for younger readers, the charm of the illustrations (both 'realistic' and 'cartoony') and humor makes it a delight for older readers as well. This book covers the Silurian and Devonian periods, giving a good overview of the Earth and it's life in those time eras. It should be enjoyed by both children and adults. My highest compliments to Hannah Bonner for writing and illustrating this book. I highly recommend it for old and young paleontologists everywhere!

Ever try to go to the natural history museum and get stumped on those things in the dioramas next to the t-rex? I do and I could barely pronounce their names correctly with my son... this is a great intro to that story - which is in some ways more interesting than dinosaurs. We like the information, the cute ideas... I wish the drawings were a bit better without the corny talking animals/species. But all in all, good book to have for the budding naturalist/paleontologist/scientist.

What a wonderful format for presenting a lot of information about the prehistory of the earth. This heavily illustrated book is very "readable" and humorous. A good gift for a 7-8 year old budding paleontologist.

My only beef is a wish that more pronunciation hints were in the text.More, please, more and more and more.

My son loves this book! It is intelligently written, wonderfully illustrated, and funny!

Never judge a book by its cover, or in this case, what people on "my side of the aisle" were saying about the author. Coming from a somewhat similar background as Rachel and not having moved as far to the "left" as her on many political and theological questions, I was naturally very skeptical about ordering her book. Many of my more conservative friends bashed her as a radical, "liberal enemy" who was hell bent on taking us all down and systematically destroying all that we held dear as either conservative Christians or even slightly left-of-center Evangelicals. It wasn't until a few more years went by and I began going through my own period of doubt, faith crises and depression that I reconsidered my opinion on the book, and after I saw that another Christian friend was reading it, I decided to give Searching for Sunday a chance.Initially I expected, going on my earlier fears and misconceptions, that the book was going to be a long, blasaie diatribe about how my friends and I were the "bad guys" for disagreeing on various issues and how I wasn't a true Christian unless I supported a whole host of controversial ideas on both politics and theology. I couldn't have been more wrong.Instead, what I found in those pages was a story about someone who wasn't all that different from me, and in fact had many of the same doubts and questions I still wrestle with today. Rather than an argument or treatise to quit your faith and understanding of Christianity, most of the book is her telling her story and how it has influenced her own faith. Instead of attacking you, the author comes alongside in your spiritual walk to offer encouragement. At least that's how I read it. At many times, it felt as though I was looking in a mirror at my own struggle of faith as I read through the book.Now to be clear, Rachel Held Evans makes it abundantly plain what her views are on controversial issues, namely LGBTQ and other major divides such as Biblical inerrancy, ecumenicism and the exclusivity of Christ. However, she does not seem to outrightly condemn those like myself who disagree with her on certain questions, although in my opinion by sharing her experiences she does challenge us all to do some serious homework and soul searching, no matter what our views might be.She seems to view the church as one big, divided mess that will somehow all be sorted out in the end, and that she is ultimately no better and in need of just as much grace as her conservative counterparts she claims to be at odds with. Honestly, for all the negativity I heard about her, I felt a real sense of humility in the author throughout the book, whether I agree with her on everything or not.So, there it is - I'm giving this book a 5 star rating and recommending it no matter what my conservative circles think of me for it, because I'm not bought out by any political or religious party and I speak my mind freely about what I read. If Rachel Held Evans ever ends up reading this review, I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to her for writing this book and helping me along my journey in a difficult time.

This is a good read that talks about Evans struggle with her faith. How she was all in, began to doubt, wanted to run, left for a while, and is now figuring things out. There are lots of powerful and poetic passages in the book and she offers some great insights into the mixed bag that comes with one's relationship with their faith community.Below are some of my favorites from the bookOn how the litmus test of belonging is belief:"Belief, after all, is the language of evangelicalism. Not sacrament. Not spirit. Not liturgy. Not tradition. Not discipleship. Belief. We’d been taught all our lives that it was shared belief that kept us in this community of faith, so we just assumed difference in belief left us out of it."A quote of a quote on priesthood:“To be a priest,” writes Barbara Brown Taylor, “is to know that things are not as they should be and yet to care for them the way they are.”On one's commitment to their religious heritage:"I realize I can no more break up with my religious heritage than I can with my parents. I may not worship in an evangelical church anymore or even embrace evangelical theology, but as long as I have an investment in the church universal, I have an investment in the community that first introduced me to Jesus. Like it or not, I’ve got skin in the game."Rejecting cynicism:"Cynicism is a powerful anesthetic we use to numb ourselves to pain, but which also, by its nature, numbs us to truth and joy. Grief is healthy. Even anger can be healthy. But numbing ourselves with cynicism in an effort to avoid feeling those things is not......if we want to heal from our wounds, including those we receive from the church, we have to kick the cynicism habit first. We have to allow ourselves to feel the pain and joy and heartache of being in relationship with other human beings. In the end, it’s the only way to really live, even if it means staying invested, even if it means taking a risk and losing it all...."This is by far my favorite quote from the book and found in the first few pages. It exemplifies the blunt desires of the millennial generation regarding their religion:"I told them we’re tired of the culture wars, tired of Christianity getting entangled with party politics and power. Millennials want to be known by what we’re for, I said, not just what we’re against. We don’t want to choose between science and religion or between our intellectual integrity and our faith. Instead, we long for our churches to be safe places to doubt, to ask questions, and to tell the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. We want to talk about the tough stuff—biblical interpretation, religious pluralism, sexuality, racial reconciliation, and social justice—but without predetermined conclusions or simplistic answers. We want to bring our whole selves through the church doors, without leaving our hearts and minds behind, without wearing a mask."

Gosh, I loved this book. As someone who's struggling with an evangelical background, and striving to both embrace that past and find a more accepting church home, I found myself nodding vigorously constantly throughout the book. At times, it felt like passages had been copied directly from my thoughts and feelings. It was truly uncanny how closely I identified with the author's attitudes and flaws.If I had one complaint, I wish the author had found more closure. I've succeeded in finding a warm and welcoming church where I can joyfully contribute my time, talents, and treasure. I feel like if the author had delayed publication by a couple of years, perhaps she could have found a similar level of resolution, and thus offered hope to her audience by showing that a successful transplant is possible. But then again, this is real life -- messy and fraught and unresolved. Kudos to the author for being unafraid to show that.
