If you can handle 400 pages and hundreds of end-notes explaining why Sunday is NOT the "new" Sabbath of the Decalogue, and have plenty of time on your hands and a burning hunger to settle issues that may seem minor or taken for granted, this book is for you!Seriously, it tackles the subject like I've never read before, with penetrating insight into the biblical and historical meaning of the Sabbath from creation until now, and the genesis and growth of Sunday's significance from New Testament times until now. It covers the sticky subject of the purpose and relevance of the Law of Moses, and touches on other subjects as well, to reach a conclusion that is iron-clad and more relevant to worship practices than one might think. Sources are taken from any and all traditions, sacred and secular, as well as firm bible exegesis. D. A. Carson did well to lend his time and formidable name to this study.

Though Carson contributes to this work, it contains a number of other contributions from excellent authors. In my opinion A.T. Lincoln does a masterful job of honing in on key issues in an evenhanded exegetical manner. If you want a top of the line scholarly work on the Sabbath issue, this is it. Unfortunately, two of the other reviews are very misleading. First, though I can see his passion, one reviewer either failed to read the book, or didn't understand it. He attempts to post a defense of the Sabbath (seventh-day) view in his review. Sadly, it contains many less than convincing points that are thoroughly dealt with in lessor works such as Perspectives on the Sabbath - 4 views, which actually does have a good defense of the seventh-day view by Skip MacCarty. The second review suggests that one must first read Samuele Bacchiocchi before reading this work. Though he is referenced over 50 times, let's put it in perspective. These authors reference close to 1000 works according to their Bibliography, not including Scripture. So, to say one must read Bacchiocchi is very much untrue, however helpful it might be to read his title and others.Lastly, the title of this work is could be somewhat confusing. This book is NOT an argument for transferring the Sabbath to Sunday. It fact it refutes such a transference theology.Overall, this is a very solid book written by outstanding scholars who do an excellent job of handling the Biblical text in an evenhanded, exegetical manner. It's a must have.

This book is not for the faint of heart. This is no cursory treatment of the issue of the Sabbath. It is an in-depth, academic treatment. If you're really looking to dive in deeply, this is a great tool. If you're looking for something lighter, look elsewhere. This is long and heavy.

It gives great insight to the initial responses and interpretations to the finished work of Christ and then how things would ebb an flow during later periods of time. It was done in a spirit of relating observations for what substantiated their evaluation and not trying to prove another understanding wrong. However, it did a good job of presenting their observations that made it clear what the differences were and why. It has been very helpful for me in that it provided solid reasoning for what I thought I believed, yet i would not have been able to articulate it even to my self.Unless you have the time, the gift/skill, and motivation for research into the depths and you want to understand why anyone could possibly say that there is a difference about how one commandments requirement could change, then it is a great resource.

I did not know I had this book sitting in my kindle to be read until one day after finishing the box set I had I was looking for my next read and came across this story and I was over the moon. Pulling all the events that lead up to Izzy and James’s hook up aka an amazing one nighter, lead me to fall in love with these two. Hating each other because of the fast connection that they found when just being around each other, without talking about the shock wave that rushes through their bodies when they touch!!!! For those that have not read this book it is a must read!!!Thought about the writing and layout of the book: The book over all was a great read. The author did a great job of keeping me as the reader wanting more to the point that I could not put the book down!What I liked: The story as a book over all was great and like I said the author did a great job tell the story at hand. Being able to link piece that I though I was missing to their true story in Resist Me.What I didn’t like: There was not much that I didn’t like about this book. Like I had said I wish I came across this book before reading Resist Me, I feel like I would have had a better set up before going into their story.Would I recommend: I would to all my friends.

It is sad that this book is not available anymore. I was lucky and got a chance to get it will it was still out there for sale. This gives a little inside into Izzy and Flash’s relationship and also Izzy and James’s relationship.When reading the bonus chapter that was in Throttle Me if you were like me you had to wonder what was going through Izzy’s mind when it came to Flash. I even had wonder about the history of Flash and Izzy as well. This is sort of Izzy and James’ side of the story in the bonus chapter of Throttle Me.In this story we get to see a little bit of the time during Thanksgiving were Izzy invite Flash to her brother Joey’s house. We get to see the love that Flash had for Izzy and the lack of love that Izzy had for Flash. Oh, don’t get me wrong. Izzy cared for Flash but only as a friend. This was hard for Flash to except since Flash was in love with Izzy. Every time she is with him it is like it messes with his heart.I also had wondered about what happen at the wedding between James and Izzy. This fills a lot in the empty space in that story. We get to see the connection that James and Izzy had for one another. We get to see the denial and battle that Izzy was going through. We also get to see the spark that these two had.I am so glad I took out time to read this story.

Describes a simple technique that can transform both the individual and society. Essentially Transcendental meditation for the masses who are intimidated by the Eastern mystic roots or cost. Elegantly explains a natural physiologic response that has been scientifically validated and universally applicable. Only scratches the surface of its benefits which go far beyond blood pressure control and feeling good. A must read for anyone interested in improving their health, happiness, well being, intelligence, intuition, compatibility, skills, and spiritual growth. I am a physician who regularly recommends this book to my patients but it is equally beneficial to the "healthy".

I read the 25th anniversary edition of this seminal work on stress reduction, which was released in 2009. Obviously, that makes this an oldie, but it’s clearly a goodie as well. The new addition has a substantial introduction, providing updated information.The body’s “fight or flight” response to stressful conditions has long been recognized and it’s virtually a household term. However, despite the equally alliterative name and the fact that Dr. Benson’s original book came out well over 30 years ago, the relaxation response remains a lesser known phenomena. Decades ago, Herbert Benson, a Harvard physician, recognized that patients’ coping ability influenced their health outcomes--specifically with respect to hypertension (a.k.a. high blood pressure.) This led him to investigate how a state of reduced stress could be achieved, and whether this could have a positive impact on health outcomes.Benson and his co-investigators found that Transcendental Meditation (TM) could trigger the relaxation response, and from that they further uncovered specific aspects of TM that were generalizable in achieving this state (i.e. an object of concentration and a passive / non-judgmental attitude.) From this it followed that activities such as yoga, chi gong, walking, and some types of exercise could achieve the same physiological state as meditation. There was scholarly pressure to establish that the relaxation response was more than a placebo effect. In proving that the relaxation response didn’t hinge on a patient’s beliefs and that it had a predictable effect (and hence it was inconsistent with the placebo effect) Benson also realized that maybe doctors shouldn’t be so dismissive of the placebo effect—people were getting better, after all, and there was some mechanism by which that wellness was achieved that would be worth understanding.In the first chapter, Benson describes an epidemic of hypertension, the fight or flight response, and its opposite number: the relaxation response. The next chapter delves into the specifics of hypertension and related topics like cholesterol consumption. Chapter 3 makes a connection between stress and the proclivity to develop hypertension. The following chapter lays out various approaches to achieving a more relaxed physiological state, including: biofeedback, yoga, zen, progressive relaxation, and hypnosis. Chapter 5 is about altered states of consciousness, and, specifically, the meditative state. Various age-old methods of achieving a meditative mind are examined. That’s followed by a chapter which lays out the results of relaxation response training in reducing hypertension and drug use. Chapter 7 is an explanation of how to achieve the desired state that generalizes beyond the specific approach of TM. The last chapter is a brief summary.I found this book to be both interesting and informative. It’s useful both as a practical guide to practice and an explanation of related information.I’d recommend “The Relaxation Response” for anyone who is interested in learned to de-stress. It’s a classic, and the new edition offers substantial updates.

This is a great book to learn about methods of controlling stress and perhaps relieving pain. I purchased the first edition in 1975 and this edition has been updated and should be a valuable asset to living. The Relaxation Response itself has worked for me for a very long time. There has been a great deal of research that has gone into this book and worth the read.

I understand why some say this could be shorter and why some say not. For those struggling with anxiety this could be an overwhelming read. Please read chapter 7 and nothing else if that is the case. If you are really wanting all the information given that's great but I wasn't really wanting a lesson on how stress effects the body.I am excited to actually start using the technique but wish the book would have been more about that. Like going through each point given about the technique and what could be used as a mental device. Like if you chose to "gaze" what would be a good thing to look at?I wrote out on paper the notes I need to actually do the technique because that's all I really wanted from the book anyways!I do think this has great potential and the entire book was an easy read but like I said for some could be overwhelming or even cause anxiety.

One of those books that should be in everyone's library; has been on mine since originally published. We are always told, "relax." This book teaches how to relax and ultimately what it takes to sleep restfully.

Good information but the techniques you are looking for are really in one or two chapters. If you are not aware of relaxation methods and the science behind it, then the book will be very informative for you.

Wonderful introduction to mind/body medicine, this book helped immensely to take meditation out of the fringe “counter-culture “ and into the mainstream. It seems somewhat dated today, but its message is no less important today than it was when it was first published. As a Zen and MBSR teacher, this is not where I would start in learning about meditation, but for many people, it may be the right way to get started.

Still relevant, if not more so, over 4 decades after the book first published. A great foundational book for any student of meditation who wishes to understand it from a scientific perspective. Content aside, I really liked Dr. Bensons writing style, eloqent and dignified.

David Lebovitz's book might better be re-titled: "The Self Absorbed Self Pitying Life In Paris: Semi Acceptable Experiences In A City That Would Be Beautiful If It Was More The Way I Wanted It To Be And There Weren't So Many French People There". The author's preciousness is insufferable, and I can see from his many anecdotes why he has had so much friction in his life with French customs and behavior. I don't care how good a cook he is, or how close he once was, during his prior life in Berkeley, to the ground zero of ALL THINGS RIGHT AND VIRTUOUS in American cookery. I cannot imagine a book about cooking in France more contrary to the kindness, humility and good humor of Julia Child's "My Life In France" than this self-conscious whine by David Lebovitz.Mr. Lebovitz's book is a prime example of a minor literary genre that might be best described as "Memoir of a Paris loving French hating Anglo-Saxon and/or American". There are many examples of this, many of them British, that combine a love of things that the author thinks wonderful in Paris with a Francophobic dislike of all things about the French that -- the author always seems to willfully ignore -- make the place the way it is, make it the way that caused the author to want to be there. A good example of this sort of noxious schizoid writing, pretending to be witty and observant, would be "A Year in the Merde" by Stephen Clarke.American and Brit audiences love this kind of drivel, because it at once allows them to feel they are sophisticated and partaking of all that is good in exotic romantic Paris, while maintaining all their prejudices and ignorance. It's all rather like an 18th century British writer saying something like "I loved India, a magnificent country in every way, although one must be careful of the bloody wogs!" Lebovitz's book is in this line, with updated politically correct attitudes about food and a lot of self aware nattering on about minor offenses, fragile emotions and stress levels.Mr. Lebovitz rhapsodizes at length about actually being proud of being rude in public -- this in a city where the word "pardon" is spoken endlessly by everyone at the slightest suggestion of offense in public, where loud talking (usually by thoughtless and oblivious Americans) is considered rude and abrasive, and where people go out of their way to observe common courtesies that have all but vanished in the US. The fact that he seems proud of not understanding what people are saying to him in French, after living for six years there, stressed that the people of Paris have not thought of him in designing their customs and habits, and annoyed endlessly that the French seem to behave like incompetent staff at his own personal theme park, is appalling.Speaking as someone who lived for many years just a few steps from where Mr. Lebovitz lives, and who knows exactly the neighborhoods and places and culture that he reports on, all I can say is that he is the new age, Berkeleyfied replacement for the classic "Ugly American". He is, instead, the Precious Bobo (Bourgeois Bohemian) Narcissistic American. I won't even start on a litany of the complaints that he makes in his book, while purporting to praise Paris and recounting how beautiful his own life has been there.But I know that if I were to run into him at the Bastille Market, or witness some of the attitudes in practice that he display in his book, that I would conclude that the Marais had, finally, been ruined beyond repair by the toxic bobo sludge spreading east from the Centre Pompidou.Are there "beautiful" thoughts and experiences in this book. Of course there are. Lebovitz writes well, and can be funny and charming in a prissy, put out with things sort of way. But if Lebovitz thinks he has become Parisian then he obviously must also think that he has become "African" when he visits Disney's Animal Kingdom, or "Chinese" and "British" when he tours Epcot. No one who complains about the things that he complains about is Parisian. They are, at heart, no matter how long they have taken up residence, a tourist.

What an utterly fun book!It took me a long time to read this book, not because of the writing, but because of the exceptional writing. The book is full of gems that you'll want to highlight, not to mention the numerous recipes that make me wish I had the physical book and not the Kindle version. To those who love to cook--especially desserts--get the hardcover book!David writes straight out about what it's like for an American with a smattering of French language skills to pick up and move to France. He dove into the culture, the people, the place and made his own way. He admits to the mistakes he made and the corrective lessons the French were only too happy to provide.If you think a relocation is in your future, I'd say to read this book and ponder what you'll really be up against--and the delightful gifts you'll receive.Here's a quote from near the end of the book: "What helped was that I understand the food and tried my best to adapt to the culture, rather than trying to make the culture adapt to me. More important, though, I learned to take the time to get to know people, especially the vendors and merchants, who would patiently explain their wares to me."He's all about learning and learning some more and waking up the next day to learn again. And there's a lesson we all need to cling to.

I have always s liked David Lebovitz, enjoy his recipes and newsletter, so I was ready to enjoy his book about Paris. I have been to Paris 20+ times, twice for long stays, so I at least have a feel for the city. I have never had anyone cut in line in front of me, never had anyone, except another American be rude or disdainful to me, had no problem getting change back so I am at a loss as to some of the “problems” he has in Paris. Please don’t think he has the last word on this glorious city!

Enjoyable read. I have been to Paris a handful of times and always seem to desire a return trip. I have never felt the French were "rude", or "standoffish", just themselves. Cultures in this world are all unique -- it's always up to the beholder. Thank you for sharing the up close & personal details of your new life in Paris and the adjustment it takes in a different society from one into which you are born. Your recipes are an added bonus!

Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years like an episode of My So-Called Afterlife. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family, and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on Earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow." Though sentimental at times, The Lovely Bones is a moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in the living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing characters. Sebold's first novel after her memoir, Lucky is a small but far from minor miracle. Sebold has taken a grim, media-exploited subject and fashioned from it a story that is both tragic and full of light and grace. The novel begins swiftly. In the second sentence, Sebold's narrator, Susie Salmon, announces, "I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973." Susie is taking a shortcut through a cornfield when a neighbor lures her to his hideaway. The description of the crime is chilling, but never vulgar, and Sebold maintains this delicate balance between homely and horrid as she depicts the progress of grief for Susie's family and friends. She captures the odd alliances forged and the relationships ruined: the shattered father who buries his sadness trying to gather evidence, the mother who escapes "her ruined heart, in merciful adultery." At the same time, Sebold brings to life an entire suburban community, from the mortician's son to the handsome biker dropout who quietly helps investigate Susie's murder. Much as this novel is about "the lovely bones" growing around Susie's absence, it is also full of suspense and written in lithe, resilient prose that by itself delights. Sebold's most dazzling stroke, among many bold ones, is to narrate the story from Susie's heaven (a place where wishing is having), providing the warmth of a first-person narration and the freedom of an omniscient one. Yes, we survivors can tell in a second of eye contact.Alice's courage may be appreciated by many, but is viscerally appreciated by other victims.Her prose and the rhythm of her writing makes this memoir all the more powerful--as if the story weren't horrific and devastating enough, of the rape and of being forced to live the rest of your life with the flinching and rage of someone who has been forever altered by having been raped.Thank you, Alice Sebold.

Frankly, you'd have to be sick to "love" this book. It opens with a horrifyingly detailed description of the author's rape when she was a virginal college freshman. Then it describes her experiences with a police/court system that put rape at the bottom of it's priority list. It's brutal and depressing. It's also a book that you'll be glad you read and that you'll never forget.I bought this book over two years ago because it was on sale and the description sounded fascinating, if forbidding. It took me two years to work up to reading it and another six months to work up to reviewing it. It's a hard book to read and an even harder book to talk about.I DIDN'T buy it because it was written by a best-selling author. I was vaguely aware that there was a much-talked-about movie "The Lovely Bones" and that it was based on a novel. But I never read new fiction and I failed to connect that book and it's author with this one. Now, of course, I see the connection. Ms. Sebold first fictionalized her rape, then (when she was able) she wrote about it as the shocking truth it was and is.Because rape is a crime that no victim walks away from without deep, lasting scars. Even a strong, confident woman must deal with the anger, fear, and shame of being forcibly, brutally raped. And Alice Sebold was as vulnerable as any young woman who ever lived.I DID love the beautifully told, deeply sad story of her childhood in a suburb in Pennsylvania. It was a neighborhood of families who had "made it" and their children should have been living "Leave It to Beaver" lives. But the Sebold parents bore no resemblance to the warm, loving Cleavers. Both husband and wife were running from the demons of their own childhoods - poverty, harsh parents, unreasonable expectations. Two people who are drowning in their own inner turmoil have little left to give their children.Mr. Sebold was a brilliant academician. Absent physically much of the time and absent emotionally ALL the time, he left the care of his two young daughters to his wife. The fact that she was an alcoholic did not (in his mind) disqualify her from raising their children. When she was drunk, he closed the door to their bedroom and told his daughters "Mommy has a headache." Then he went back to his books.Eventually, Mrs. Sebold stopped drinking, but she never dealt with the cause - her anger at being forced into a role that she didn't want and wasn't able to fulfill. If times had been different, she and her husband might been a contented childless professional couple. But that wasn't how things were done in the 1950's. Mrs. Sebold retreated from life as a full-time mother into the comfort of alcohol. Deprived of booze, she replaced it with crippling anxiety attacks. Her husband retreated into his professional life and their daughters got along as best they could.Having been raised by a woman who loved being mother to a large family and a father who felt at least SOME some responsibility for parenting his children, I cannot imagine the sadness of the author's childhood. As she says, they were NEVER a family, but "four solitary souls" living in the same house. Alice Sebold was raped emotionally many times before a stranger dragged her into a secluded tunnel.Her older sister Mary was a pleaser and an achiever. She was taking her final college exams when her younger sister was raped. Alice was more of a rebel than her sister, but neither of them escaped their mother's strict rules and her obsession with sexual purity. Was she hoping to keep her daughters virgins so that they didn't make the "mistake" of having children of their own? If so, it worked.Sebold's story of her family's reaction to her rape is almost unbelievable and yet it's probably more common than otherwise. Typically, her mother focused on creating the proper outfit for her daughter to wear to court. Clothes make the rape victim, right? Her father made painful and sometimes surprisingly effective attempts to comfort his daughter, but nothing in their history made it easy for him to give love or for her to accept it.Equally fascinating were the reactions of the young people around her. Expecting little support from her parents, she reached out to her peers with sometimes startling results. And she was forced to come to terms with the fact that her rape was NOT a passing phenomenon, but a last legacy. She had joined a club that no one wants to be a member of.The story has a happy ending. Alice Sebold went on to find a rewarding life as a teacher of creative writing. She says her students "saved" her. And she eventually became an acclaimed writer. No one could be more deserving of her "luck."I'm glad I read this book. It's one I'll never forget.

Reading this book after watching the movie adapted from it was enjoyable. I seek these out and am usually rewarded. As I read..reflecting on the changes that were made adds a level of comfort to the read. Highly recommend this book and the movie.

Very well written and the little details of human interaction and observation are what makes this story so unique and special. As a new mother, the beautiful parent-child perspectives caused me to stop and look at my parents anew. I also look at my little baby girl and can't imagine this happening to her but that's the world we live with, I suppose. Horrible and lovely all at once. Well done.

This book is in no way easy to read. It starts out with a graphic account of 18 year old Alice Sebold's rape. I say account because it is mostly just facts, but that doesn't make it any easier to read. However I do think it was necessary to know the details to be able to understand how a horrible ordeal that lasted an hour affects the victim forever in so many different ways. It's a story of courage but without a halo. Sebold doesn't come off as having all the answers. She just explains how she got through the rape, trial and its aftermath. And she didn't do it without difficulty.The book strikes me as clinical in many ways, in particular Sebold's account of the trial and the defense attorney's attempt to exonerate his client. The facts themselves are enough to indict the legal system that always tries to blame the female victim. However, in this case, the prosecutors had a nearly perfect victim. Sebold was a virgin before the rape, was brutally beaten in easily photographed ways, had not used drugs or alcohol and after a few initial stumbles, is able to catch on to the defense lawyer's attempts to cast a bad light on her or twist her words. I really appreciate that the book didn't become a raging diatribe at any point. It simply points out ,as Sebold says, that being a woman can suck, because they are always trying to smash you down. Even the aftermath of the rape and Sebold's trying to get on with her life after the rapist's conviction rings very true and is touching without trying to emotionally manipulate.If you want to know how such a brutal crime can affect you or simply read about someone who made it through, it's worth reading this book.

I would recommend this book as it was recommended to me . It made one think about what becomes of us when we die. It lets our imagination go to more possibilities of what our life could be like when we pass on, whether a terrible death or at the end of a long and happy life. As many believe the dead can return and influence these we leave behind. It makes life after death not as scary if we can see what how such a terrible death can change those wee care about.
