The textbook arrived well within the window it was set to be delivered. It came via USPS, not UPS, and that was great because the latter tends to leave packages on my doorstep and it could create risks from thefts, etc.The paperback was in good condition. It is wrapped carefully by the seller and thus well protected and for reading purposes unblemished.Having said that, the recent edition of K. Ogata's excellent textbook seemed like it underwent a considerable transformation. Why? It has got Matlab all throughout as the preferred way of solving problems, whereas in the 1st edition dating back to 1970 or thereabouts, Ogata stressed intuitive understanding - he went through thick and thin to explain classical feedback control theory, the so-called Single-input Single-output (AKA SISO) systems by citing engineering and related examples and took pains to use diagrams to illustration various concepts. To do justice, he included at the end of his early landmark work then (circa 1970) some important analysis for more "futuristic" control analysis utilizing the modern State variable approach, now regarded within the realm of Linear Multivariable Control Systems. This was carefully done with Ogata painfully laying out the usage of vector algebra and multivariate calculus toward the applicable analysis. The positive part was that he avoided the heavy set theoretic and highly mathematical analysis approach which was then quite vogue and considered very much "in-style" during that era – I say that because the mathematical approach may not be appropriate for all readers, be they students, researchers or practicing engineers since they might not always be sophisticated in the abstract mathematical sense.Fast forward some 40+ years, Ogata comes up with his updated textbook. The original edition, I must say, was highly successful and readable for decades, accessible to the average Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical and Nuclear Engineering students hoping to master Control Theory and possibly apply it to his or her field of engineering analysis and design. And, as I said, the textbook was written without becoming heavily involved in abstract mathematics utilizing set-theoretic methods and various "spaces" (Hilbert, Banach, etc.) along with related topological implications. Why? This is because the more abstract mathematical approach can obfuscate the average student who is not all that well-trained in Mathematical Analysis - Real, Complex and Functional. Moreover, those who are frankly disinterested in the heavy use of mathematical artillery would be "turned off" in the aforementioned manner.The plus side of the newer edition appears to be the addition of examples illustrated with Matlab because the latter software package is simply indispensable in the sense modern control engineers cannot do without it. Furthermore, the inclusion of the very important concepts behind Robust Control Theory for Linear Systems seems to add value for his time-honored textbook. Although robustness is not always straightforward and readily explained with intuitive clear examples and related illustrations (or "obvious to the casual observer"), it is necessary to inculcate newcomers to the idea of robustness in control systems undergoing design and development. Much of robustness is connected to theory and more often than not require some degree of mathematical rigor. Another area that is noteworthy is the shift to and some emphasis placed on working examples using PID controllers which are more recently stressed because of their importance in the practical implementation of control design.The down side I must say is the length or "volume" of the 5th edition of the textbook. The relative brevity comes across as a surprise to me. Why? With increased knowledge and almost explosive growth in Control Theory over the last 4 decades come more ideas and newer concepts. The original 1970 textbook has 836 pages whereas the 5th edition here has 902 pages. This is a case where I believe the relative brevity is really uncalled for in the updated edition. Ogata is a fairly inspiring author. Being a Mechanical Engineer and longstanding professor at the University of Minnesota, he has always stressed at explanations the fundamental level with engineering intuition. Even if he often comes across detailed to the point of being tedious, none of his writings and underlying explanations are overdone, obvious, excessive, obfuscating, perplexing, repetitive and verbose. Also, Ogata does not spare pains and effort here in the 5th edition of the textbook here, albeit it is hard for anyone, even he, to expound on Robust Control concepts regardless of the individual author's style. The abstract ideas do show up and in some sense, so Ogata could have polished it further with his clear and lucid technical writing style to render the underlying ideas and concepts more readily understandable, i.e., for the struggling newcomer in the world of control engineering (and people such as I myself who are in need of updating my decades old knowledge and engineering education). In short, the first edition seems more self explanatory and complete with definitely more clarity for an older engineer as me even if the 5th edition covers a bit more material in stressing Matlab usage and PID design as I mentioned before. There is definitely a sacrifice of detailed explanation of underlying ideas in, say, challenging aspects of Nyquist criterion for system stability to allow for room to accommodate Matlab and current design involving PID controllers.All in all, a very good textbook given that author always makes a sincere effort to introduce and convey mostly difficult and often profound concepts to newcomers, particularly students starting to study Control Theory in a modern setting. Henceforth, I view this updated textbook as very decent if definitely unsurpassed relative to his very outstanding work in the original edition.

This text was difficult to get into and not recommended if you are looking to study the subject on your own. I purchased this for a class and the professor had a very good understanding of controls and both chemical and electrical systems which made the use of this book easier. If your professor is not providing supplemental information, this book may not aid in your learning of the subject. The use of MATLAB syntax written in the book provided great assistance in performing the problems at the end of the chapter.On another note, it seems that compared to the fourth edition, the fifth edition is missing some helpful subjects especially the review topics that were in previous editions.

A very practical, and clear educational reference. Made controls clearer not more complicated in my opinion. Many math and physic textbooks can be hard to follow if overly theoretical, and not practical. And problem workbooks cam be misleading. This us a logical step by step buildup in theory, problem solving, and even the programming syntax.

Decent book, info is there. Very hard to search through by the inconspicuous format of secion titles. This makes finding information and using the text slow and aggravating. Definitely a topic that benefits by a good teacher.

Great book but lacks application problems. I am told this book is more for an indepth analysis of topics already learned from other coureses with the addition of Observers,state observer feedback, Intro to the use of Kalman filters, state variable feedback, and optimization. The optimization section could be better but if you have a great teacher its a good reference. I had used this book as an undergrad and told its a reference for grad students.

I love Christy, I really do, she has a passion for empowering women and I am able to connect with her. I bought this book hoping it would be a guide for my business or give me answers to questions I didn't know to ask but I couldn't get past the first few chapters. I guess this was my mistake for not reading the title correctly but everything was "you gotta love what your doing! love it! love it! LOVE IT!!" and honestly, I do get joy out of what I am doing but it's not my passion I don't LOVE IT. I do it because it gives me a creative outlet and well, mostly because it makes me money. I started to doubt what I was doing because based on this book, I felt that if I don't love it then it won't work and that's just not true. Maybe I'll skip ahead and see if it really gets in to talking about business but I needed to take a break from it so I didn't quit something that is working for me. I think (most of the time) you have to decide if you want to live your passion or make money, very few people will find something that does both. For example, I LOVE baking! I could wake up everyday at 3 am and start baking BUT after much research, I know it won't make me money and as a family of 6, we need money over hard work and hardly any pay. So I would prefer to do something I LIKE so in the future I can do something I LOVE. Yes, my mistake for not reading the title, hopefully I am able to get some knowledge out of the next few chapters.

I felt like I was falling behind in a lot of the “business” side of my small business but, after reading this I feel more confident and empowered in my ability to make my small business a success! Christy’s writing style has a knowledgeable “big sister” feel. She makes learning about small business easy to understand by breaking it down in simple steps to follow! I got this book to brush up on my linear algebra. I'm looking to get into digital signal processing, and matrix operations are absolutely vital to pretty much everything a computer does. I approached this book as an engineer, meaning I just wanted a couple cheat sheets and quick algorithms to get out of it that I could then apply to a program, while chucking all the mathematical formality and notation out the window.And because of that, by the second chapter I was failing miserably. I thought I could skim over the first chapter because I legitimately did know and remember all the concepts in it. I know matrix multiplication, I know what row reduced echelon form is, I know the basics of solving systems of equations with matrices etc. As I went on, I found myself unable to understand any of the book. And then I went back, and right there in chapter 1.1, it explains exactly what every little notation is. I had to get myself into a mathematical mindset. There's all sorts of seemingly trivial little details, little caveats and exceptions and specific wording that's actually crucial.Trust me, if you use this book, you will understand every single little tiny detail of matrices so incredibly well. But! You have to work through it. Don't skip anything. If some proof looks scary and complex, it's because you skipped something earlier in the book. Sometimes it will go "And now from this equation we go to this equation" and some notation that you thought you knew what it meant but you really don't, and you'll wonder why he skipped like 10 steps. This book is a very good book for someone wanting to dive into Linear algebra. The author does a massive number of the proofs in the book and is fairly good at explaining the subject matter in each chapter. Given that every person learns a little differently, I'd still suggest using online resources to supplement the readings and exercises, especially for practical applications.

Charles Cullen's original goal was to "provide a text, requiring a minimum number of prerequisites, which would enable me, in a one-term course, to cover...linear algebra and matrix theory." This volume does so in the first five chapters and continues with four additional chapters designed to support a second term. He suggests as background "only" an introductory course in calculus and analytic geometry.The first chapter introduces basic matrix operations such as addition, multiplication, transposition and inversion. Chapter 2 covers vector spaces and the concepts of linear independence and rank. Chapters 3 and 4 introduce and elaborate matrix determinants and linear transformations. Chapter 5 develops the Jordan canonical form using invariant subspaces and direct sum decompositions. Chapters 6 and 7 take an alternative path to explaining the Jordan canonical form. Chapters 8 and 9 use concepts and tools from previous chapters to introduce matrix analysis and numerical analysis.I bought this book for an online matrix algebra course when I found the required text, Matrix Algebra: An Introduction, less than helpful. Even though the course text was targeted toward social scientists like myself, its explanations and formula derivations were less helpful than its examples. I found Cullen's book and it got me through the course. In addition to clear explanations, practice exercises with answers, and helpful organization, it was also less expensive and covered more material.I recommend this book to those needing a refresher in matrix methods or approaching them for the first time.

About the Author

Sylvia Plath was born in 1932 in Massachusetts. Her books include the poetry collections The Colossus, Crossing the Water, Winter Trees, Ariel, and Collected Poems, which won the Pulitzer Prize. A complete and uncut facsimile edition of Ariel was published in 2004 with her original selection and arrangement of poems. She was married to the poet Ted Hughes, with whom she had a daughter, Frieda, and a son, Nicholas. She died in London in 1963.

Basically, everybody should read this. I don't care if you don't like poetry.I paid a buck fifty for the paperback "Revised" edition (arranged by Plath's daughter Frieda in an attempt to be more faithful to her mother's arrangement, in contrast to the arrangement by Frieda's father, Ted Hughes), but this is a million dollar book.The poetry is rich in images, with ominous visions of Nazis and death sharing the pages with bees, puking babies, and other fixtures of domesticity. Plath is playful with language, but sharp and relentless in her deconstruction of the world around her. She does not give any illusion of her life as a mother and wife being a fairy tale ending; she readily admits that suicide is on her mind. So thickly layered are each of her poems, I will gladly reread them all a dozen more times to find more juicy double meanings and commentary tucked away in the lines.Some of my personal favorite poems were:Lesbos -- The kitchen is not a holy ground to Sylvia. She enjoys zero time spent with another woman, possibly the mistress who took her husband away, whose grating attitude makes idle chit-chat a living hell.The Applicant -- "First, are you our sort of person?//Do you wear//A glass eye, false teeth or a crutch,//A brace or a Hook,//Rubber breasts or a rubber crotch" This poem speaks for itself.Daddy -- Among the most well-known poems from this collection, it devilishly mixes childlike word play with black images of fascism, "The boot in the face, the brute//Brute heart of a brute like you". It reads like a scathing, adult version of Dr. Seuss. I love it.Just get it already!

Useful for serious students of Plath's work, or anyone who has fallen particularly under the spell of her most famous collection. It is interesting to see the volume the way she left it, with the poems in a different order and several other works of this period omitted, although it is not clear she might not have tinkered with the sequence and contents further before publication had she lived. As we have no notes regarding any plan or schema she had for Ariel, and her diary from that period was apparently destroyed, any further speculation regarding the structure of the book is pure conjecture. Frieda Hughes' 'Forward' adds an interesting new note to our general view of her mother and should diminish a bit her status as a feminist martyr, which is probably a good thing. I'm not sure that this volume adds much else to the average poetry lover's appreciation of Ariel, however: it isn't as if Hughes' reordering mangled the texts or destroyed some inner logic which had been present in the original typescript. Mostly, each poem stands on its own in either version.

This version of Ariel is restored to the way Sylvia Plath left it before her death. It differs from the earlier editions that Ted Hughes arranged and edited and it restores/replaces some of his additions and removals. It includes a wonderful and intricate foreword by Frieda Hughes, written personally and professionally (quite a feat.) There is a ferocity in these poems that wasn't found in earlier collections, and it's my favorite collection of Sylvia Plath's poems. We're lucky that her daughter is so carefully restoring the full Plath collection faithfully.

The Kindle edition seems to have some typos, as several sentences are repeated. I was disappointed that this edition did not include any interpretations of the individual poems, although there was a brief "about the author" containing less information than can be easily found online. Since Sylvia Plath was, famously, a confessional poet, knowing something about her life is almost essential to understanding her poetry. The main benefit of this edition is the introduction by her daughter, Frieda Hughes, who, though she was only 2 when her mother committed suicide, claims to have some memories of her, and sheds some light on the poet and discredits those who demonized Ms. Hughes' father, the poet Ted Hughes.

Saw this on an Instagram story, and I’ve been trying to hunt it down ever since. I work in a used book store, and have had my fingers crossed for a while. I eventually broke down, and messaged the person. They were kind enough to give me the ISBN! So so glad to finally have a copy of this, as it’s truly beautiful. The book is very well made, and the font is a reasonable size. A perfect gift for any lover of poetry or Sylvia Plath.

This is an amazing book. I'm very glad Ms. Hughes (Frieda Hughes) did this, because what Ted Hughes did was not what Sylvia Plath wanted at all, or else the manuscript would have been that way. I think that the poems are beautiful, and are written perfectly. It includes many great poems (i.e; The Applicant, Morning Song, Tulips, etc.) that show Plath's intelligence, but also her inner sadness, and misery that she was going through when she wrote these poems. This book also includes the real pages she wrote on her typewriter (They have her handwriting on them, and it's very interesting to see).My final comments:If you are going to buy Ariel, never buy the one that says "Sylvia Plath (Author), Ted Hughes (Editor)" or whatever it says that involves Ted Hughes. All I can say is avoid anything that has his name along with Sylvia Plath's, so if you want her journal for example, buy the one that I luckily noticed before I bought the one Ted Hughes edited, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath. Sylvia Plath is an amazing poet, and if you, for example, are new to her poetry, Ariel: The Restored Edition is the book to buy. I also recommend Anne Sexton, and Robert Lowell if you like the confessionals.

I read EllaMac’s review, which said that this version was not the Ted Hughes version, and also it includes a forward by Frieda Hughes. I ordered the book and it is in fact the Ted Hughes version with a forward by Robert Lowell. So much for getting the revised version.

The best Prolog reference work I have found. Well organized and concise, but with helpful examples. Not cluttered up with commands and options for a specific Prolog interpreter.

This book is a must for anyone doing serious Prolog programming. The book itself is a standard in clarity, concision and rigor.There are minor drawbacks: 1. Poor paper quality and binding. Any programmer striving to write portable Prolog programs would use it heavily and the poor qualify shows off in just a month of daily use. Unfortunately, the form is not at the same level as the content. 2. The predefined predicates lack a listing by page (although they are listed by topic). This makes finding a certain particular predicate rather cumbersome when looked up frequently. 3. Minor typos.Otherwise, no one serious about Prolog can afford to overlook this book.

The title of this book accurately describes its organization and content. Although numerous examples of each language feature are given throughout the book, it is definitely not intended to be a tutorial.For that purpose, a beginning user of PROLOG should look elsewhere.However, the book fills a definite need in the PROLOG programming community. Many dialects of this langugage exist in the academic world and this book provides standard definitions and usage of PROLOG syntax and functionality. Hopefully, it will provide more uniformity for the various implementations of PROLOG when referenced by the compiler writers. But it is definitely useful for programmers who are writing PROLOG programs.

About the Author

J. A. Cuddon was a writer, school teacher and academic. Best known for his Dictionary of Literary Terms, he also produced the large Dictionary of Sport and Games, as well as several novels, plays and travel books. He also edited two anthologoies of supernatural fiction. He died in 1996. M.A.R. Habib received his doctorate from the University of Oxford, and is Professor of English at Rutgers University. You get a lot of value for the money with this one. For a reasonable price you get almost 1000 pages of literary information. Every obscure literary term imaginable is here, but that's not why I am taking the time to praise this handy little volume. It's a browsers dream.What I found most interesting were the lengthy sections on genres. There are pages devoted to specific types of novels, dramas, and poems. There are luxuriously long sections on science fiction novels, crime fiction, pastoral writings, short stories, gothic fiction, comic drama, and a host of other such topics. When you go to the short story section, for instance, you will find 12 pages dedicated to coverage of authors and their works dating from biblical times to the present (1998). I quickly found recommended writers that I hadn't known along with those I was well acquainted with. Although this book was inexpensive, I have spent many times its purchase price buying new books that I found referenced in this Dictionary. There are no individual entries for authors or their works in this book. For that you need to go to books like the Oxford, Cambridge, New York Public Library or Benet's literature reference works.In poetry sections you will find examples of the type of verse being discussed. You will be amused at some of the entries provided under "light verse" and "limericks". There is even a heading for "shaggy dog story".Any weaknesses to the book? Well there are a few. This book has a single author, unlike many reference works that have a group of contributors. This can lead to weak sections that are outside the solo author's expertise. Every reader will find a favorite author or two missing from the genre sections. I was appalled, for instance, to find no mention of Flannery O'Connor in the section on American short story authors. As the author is English, there may also be a slight bias toward English writers. I was also somewhat annoyed that Mr. Cuddon often -but not always- didn't take the time to give a foreign title its English translation. Would it have hurt him to list the Victor Hugo novel as "Toilers of the Sea" instead of "Les Travailleurs de le Mer"?I am a hopeless book addict, and this little reference work really made my day(s).

I recently started an English MA program and wanted a book with a good overview of lit. theory. This one is great! It brings all terms and theories together in a nice, compact book (I also love the curved-edge pages for quick flipping). EVERYTHING is in here.Norton's Anthology of Lit. Theory is also very good, but it is a compliation of essays. This penguin dictionary provides quick access to basic tenets of theory schools. Big names in each school of theory are mentioned, as well as major works that reflect particualr movements and schools of thought. This book is absolutely essential for anyone needing a good overview of lit. theory, lit. terms, and the study of lit in general. Highly recommended! (get the Norton Anthology of Lit. Theory too so you can dig deeper once you find it in the Penguin).

Has loads of literary terms. Not sure about the theory.

Under twenty dollars for a well thought-out, expertly assembled dictionary of over a thousand pages makes this Penguin an excellent purchase. As for the content, I will simply "second" the observations of earlier reviewers - and recommend that you look through their notes below to be sure this is what you want. This review is just to offer...One CAVEAT: This inch-and-three-quarters paperback is extremely valuable and deserves to get well thumbed-over by any student of English literature or criticism in general. One could only wish that the publisher had released it in a "quality paperback" format that would better survive such thumbing. The present release (a 2000 paperback reissue of the 1998 hardback) is closer in quality to a mass market paperback, with newsprint grade paper, etc. Annotators and highlighters will find their inks bleeding severely through the pages.Unfortunately, few of us will have the C-note to lay out for the (presumably much better produced) hardback edition... which would be a *real* treat to keep at one's writing table. Until you win the lottery(or Penguin releases a quality paperback), grab the affordable paperback: it's rewarding enough to keep you *wanting* to highlight, although disappointing when you do.

This book hasn't let me down yet. Everything we've discussed in my British Lit class, as far as literary terms, not the actual stories, I have been able to find in the book. It's been incredibly helpful when writing research papers. It's a great tool to have at your disposal.
