It's an OK textbook. Honestly, I found a few errors in it (namely, the convention of choosing a left-handed or right-handed coordinate axis system, since it didn't agree with the character tables in the appendix), and the notation wasn't very precise. I did learn a few things from it, but I learned more from "Group Theory and Chemistry" by David M. Bishop, and supplemented the information in Carter with that.Overall, if it wasn't relatively inexpensive, I probably wouldn't recommend it, but it is a good reference text. I appreciate the useful correlation tables in it (which you don't find in many group theory texts), and the character tables are always nice to have.

I used the product to do practice problems regarding the chapters pertaining to the Inorganic Chemistry lecture course. I learned so much from the course. This book is an essential must have for those studying inorganic chemistry.

The best book I've come across for group theory. Ideas are clearly explained, lots of examples, and wording isn't too technical that it's unclear as to what is being read. Cotton was so confusing that I always defaulted to this one. Highly Recommended by Chemistry Graduate student.

The chapters are well written, with images and illustrations abundant. The challenging end of the chapter problems enhance learning. I would recommend this book to someone who has had a short introduction to group theory already, but wants to dive deeper into the world of molecular symmetry.

I used this book for a class at university. It is a good guide for learning molecular symmetry. The textbook isn't super big, and makes for an easier read than many textbooks I have read.

This book was required for one my classes, and this book delivered in terms of explaining somewhat elusive concepts in a clear and concise manner.

Great book, I've compared with my classmates that got another version of this(and spent a lot more money) and everything is the same

The book is fundamentally great for organometallic chemists building up frontier ideas.

#377,183 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm constantly reading books on business, personal development and entrepreneurship. What I've found is that each book I've read is a part of a whole and the Creator's Code is no different. I'm thoroughly impressed by the research and the conclusions and I'd recommend this book to any fresh and seasoned entrepreneur on understanding how successful companies were built by those interviewed. What I would caution is that entrepreneurial success is far more encompassing than what this book outlines but like I said, it's an integral part of a larger picture. True success in business requires years of execution, analysis and the courage to go do it again quickly, over and over. What that also means is that there are other factors you'll need to incorporate in order to understand and execute. There is no end to success. Rather it is an endless path of improving through grit, consistency and the willingness to explore the unknown and learn from these experiences.

The book is very well written and very well explained on what it takes to create a business. The six skills are spot on; however, I do think there is one skill that I feel should have been there as a separate chapter is ability to sense the timing. I think Peter Thiel said this that "if you are one step ahead, you are a genius, but if you are two steps ahead, then you are a crackpot." I think successful creators have a knack of distinguishing between the two.I highly recommend this book. I learned a lot. I thought I knew it, but I know it better now.

You know that sense you get when something has the ring of deep truth to it? That's the feeling I got a couple of months ago when listening to Amy Wilkinson's talk about her upcoming book. So I pre-ordered the book, and when it came out, went through it like lightning through tofu, devouring it in 1.5 sittings. For my brain, this book is pure crack: stories of risk-taking, hard-working, talented entrepreneurs and their ventures. If that were all that "Creator's Code" were offering, I'd already be sold. But Wilkinson goes way beyond that and actually distills the wisdom of these unusually successful people into six principles mere mortals like you and me can use. Here are the 6 principles:1. FIND THE GAP: By staying alert, creators spot opportunities that others don't see.2. DRIVE FOR DAYLIGHT: Just as race-car drivers keep their eyes fixed on the road ahead, creators focus on the future.3. FLY THE OODA LOOP: Creators continuously update their assumptions. In rapid succession, they observe, orient, decide, and act.4. FAIL WISELY: Creator set failure ratios, place small bets to test ideas, and develop resilience. They hone the skill to turn setbacks into successes.5. NETWORK MINDS: Creators bring together diverse brainpower to come up with breakthrough solutions.6. GIFT SMALL GOODS: Creators unleash generosity by helping others, often by sharing information, pitching in to complete a task, or opening opportunities to colleagues. Here's what I like about the book:--The stories of the entrepreneurs: You may have used PayPal or eBay, or bought Spanx undergarments, or wished for a Tesla Model S for Christmas, but you may not know how these companies came into being. Loved hearing how Sarah Blakely started as a door-to-door fax machine saleswoman, how Pierre Omidyar and Jeff Skoll partnered to get eBay going, how Elon Musk was always mere millimeters away from disaster (or already in it) with Tesla and SpaceX, and how the PayPal guys beat out the competition and beat down international fraud rings through sheer determination and ingenuity.--The interviews: I hope Wilkinson has super-elite platinum molybdenum frequent flyer status by now, since she must have run up crazy miles to interview pretty much every single luminary of today's entrepreneurial world. Some of these guys I had heard of before; some of them I'm glad to know about now (e.g. Steve Ells, founder of Chipotle). The list is impressive: the aforementioned Musk, Omidyar and Blakely; Elizabeth Holmes, the elusive wunderkind of Theranos; Peter Thiel; genius inventor Dean Kamen (of Segway and Slingshot fame); Google's Larry Page; MIT's Bob Langer, head of the world's largest bioengineering lab; Hamdi Ulukaya of Chobani yogurt; Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky of Airbnb; Kevin Plank of Under Armour; Max Levchin of PayPal, Yelp, Affirm, Glow, and co-inventor of CAPTCHA; David Sacks of PayPal and Yammer; Jessica Herrin of Stella & Dot; the legendary David Kelley of IDEO.--The ideas: Wilkinson has combed the scientific literature to bring us some gems from psychology, anthropology and neuroscience relating directly to creative success. For example, from psychiatrist Albert Rothenberg: "Conceptual contradiction can lead to creative results." So, hire people with different opinions. Or psychologist Carol Dweck's notion of growth vs fixed mindsets, and how the former leads to a more can-do attitude and entrepreneurial drive. The importance of the "Yes, and..." rule of improv comedy in hatching and developing new ideas. And one of my favorite from the whole book: "Creators become comfortable with being uncomfortable. To fail wisely, they place small bets, set a failure ratio, believe enough to persist, and turn setbacks into strength."-- The implementation: Wilkinson doesn't just tell you what the principles are; she also gives you eminently usable methods for implementing them. For example, regarding Principle 5, Networked Minds: "To solve multifaceted problems, creators bring together the brainpower of diverse individuals through on- and off-line forums. They harness cognitive diversity to build on each other's ideas. To do this, creators design shared spaces, foster flash teams, hold prize competitions, and build work-related games. They collaborate with unlikely allies." Do you have any idea how much concentrated wisdom those 49 words contain? Amazing.-- Thoroughness: Amy did 200 interviews with founders and went through 10,000 pages of transcript notes, 5000 pages of secondary data and 4000 academic papers to come up with her stuff. Not sure how she boiled it all down to 6 concise principles (I suspect it involved some secret formula and goat sacrifices), but for all of us, I'm glad she did.-- Writing style: One reason besides my superhuman reading speed that I could get through this book so fast is that the writing is super-smooth, no snags. Heck, I'm already re-reading it because I know it's an easy read.In the end, the book is an embodiment of the spirit of generosity that Principle 6 (Gift Small Goods) advocates. Wilkinson does not glamorize rapacious money-grubbers but rather chronicles the work of well-intentioned entrepreneurs out to solve real problems facing humans. Her relentlessly positive tone and pro-sharing attitude can inspire us all to go out there and use these principles to make useful things. As such, "The Creator's Code" is no small good; it's a great gift to all who read it.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Happiness Engineer, Entrepreneur; Author, The Tao of DatingSan Francisco, CA

I saw Amy Wilkinson speak at an event which is how I heard about this book. The concepts were good, but I didn't think there was much instruction on how to apply to that to one's own life. What made me want to read the book, and what I really liked about it is that it included the stories of how a lot of entrepreneurs and companies got started, like Telsa, AirBnB, eBay, etc. Those stories are inspiring!

Amy Wilkinson made a great job picking the brains of today's greatest entrepreneurial heroes, telling amazing and inspiring stories, and conveying that knowledge into a practical framework to be used by anyone who aspires to be a high impact CREATOR.In my role as founder and CEO of a financial services company, my main concern is to bring great products to market and then operate them better than anyone else. It's dangerously easy to go with the flow and stagnate. Here's where some of the Creator's Code lessons kick in: be alert to spot opportunities, dare to create without fear of failure and never stop looking for a better future. As it is easier said than done, the lively and well told stories serve as a great source of inspiration, and also these make lessons stick.I also have the privilege to serve as a part time professor of Strategic Planning and Innovation at one of Latam's leading universities (ITESM). In the Creator's Code I found a great source of knowledge worth sharing with my students; I really wished I had access to such a treasure a decade ago. So, in the author's words, I flew the ooda loop and changed my teaching plan, replacing my former compilation of magazine articles, podcasts and youtube videos with this extraordinary book. Even my students loved it!I'm sure this book will make the difference to many "regular" people, who will get the inspiration and knowledge to create the great products of tomorrow and who will become our future entrepreneurial heroes. My congratulations and thankfulness to the author.

This type of book has been written many times: talk about some best ptactices of hot businesses and try to find some commonalities. However the problem is just shortly after this book, many of the examples are floundering. Not the author’s fault but it’s just the problem with this type of book.

Mao’s Last Revolution

Review

“The two leading experts in the West on the Cultural Revolution offer a powerful--and awful--tale, tackled on a grand scale. One can see the corrosive effect of Mao Zedong on just about everyone with whom he came in contact at this time. This perceptive study of the Cultural Revolution is a strong achievement.”―Jonathan Spence“Given the hostile biographies and debunking histories that have recently appeared, it's safe to say that Mao's overlong honeymoon is over. In this exhaustive critique of the terrifying Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution between 1966 and 1976, when Mao unleashed the Red Guards on his people, MacFarquhar and Schoenhals deliver the divorce papers. [They] cover the unceasing, pointless intrigues between Mao and his chief henchmen as the violence and denunciations, the staged humiliations and mass executions raged out of control, and the country lurched into turmoil.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Supple prose, impeccable scholarship, and a Great Wall of bibliography...MacFarquhar and Schoenhals confirm our suspicions that without the disaster of the Cultural Revolution, China would not have been so eager to motor down the 'capitalist road,' and that Mao himself, purging comrades with 'deliberate opaqueness,' called every bloody shot.”―John Leonard, Harper's“An exhaustive history of China's Cultural Revolution.”―Benjamin Healy and Benjamin Schwarz, The Atlantic“[A] detailed, important book...For anyone interested in the period it contains real insights into the Cultural Revolution, when hundreds of thousands were killed, many dying without knowing what they had done wrong. The book communicates an amazing sense of escalation as Mao's 'Red Terror' spread through the campuses and schools of Beijing and then into factories, the countryside and people's homes. Intent on preserving power, Mao constructed elaborate intrigues around himself and the book captures the hysteria of the era in its descriptions of Red Guards, leftist students and schoolchildren roaming the streets attacking intellectuals, screaming denunciations of 'rightists' and 'revisionists,' forcing their elders to wear dunce hats, beating them up and exiling them to the country...Mao's Last Revolution leaves the reader in no doubt that Mao was a monster, but its dispassionate tone points a way towards understanding the genesis of that evil. Showing how Mao conceived and carried out the Cultural Revolution is crucial to building a broader understanding of that tumultuous period in Chinese history and also what China's future means for the world. This book brings that understanding closer.”―Clifford Coonan, Irish Times“[MacFarquhar and Schoenhals’s] account is authoritative, and presented with powerful narrative sweep.”―Michael Kenney, Boston Globe“I expect this will be the definitive study in English for some time to come.”―Scott McLemee, History News Network“[Mao's Last Revolution], gracefully, and with a necessary forensic flair, weaves a web of fact from disparate sources. The result is a detailed mosaic of this baffling era. The two political scientists build a picture that shocks with its cool detail.”―Didi Kirsten Tatlow, South China Morning Post“What emerges from the exhaustive research in this book is an understanding of the Cultural Revolution less as a coherent ideological movement and more as divide-and-rule political tactics...Mao's Last Revolution is a fascinating study of Mao's colossal, yet cunning, misadventure.”―Ben Arnoldy, Christian Science Monitor“[A] sweeping panorama of the Cultural Revolution...MacFarquhar and Schoenhals are both leading authorities on Chinese Communist Party history...The story they do tell is absorbing.”―Jonathan Spence, New York Review of Books

"Mao's Last Revolution" is not about Mao. And it is not really about the Cultural Revolution. Instead it tells the story of how high governmental officials and organizations were affected by the Cultural Revolution and how they jockeyed with each other, and with Mao, in deciding how to react to it. The point of the title is that the revolution was Mao's idea and that even people immediately below him didn't know what was going on, what the point of it was, or what they were supposed to do about it. The book describes the actual events of the revolution indirectly, if at all. It seems at times to assume that the reader already has a good basic knowledge of the Cultural Revolution and of the Great Leap Forward; that knowledge is not essential but is helpful. The book is well-written and useful, though more for those with a special interest in the Cultural Revolution than for the general reader. The Kindle version does not contain any of the book's photographs. To add insult to injury it does contain their captions -- with an instruction to refer to the printed version for the photos themselves! Nothing on the product page (now, at any rate), reveals that. In my opinion this is essentially misrepresentation on Amazon's part. The Kindle version also contains the formatting errors that we are becoming accustomed to seeing -- hyphens between paragraphs, gaps between words, etc. I read it on an iPad but at least one other review here also complains about this so its apparently not an iPad-only problem. And the footnotes are not hyperlinked.I've been reading Kindle books since they were introduced. You would expect the technology to improve over time. But as Kindles are becoming more expensive they are also becoming shoddier.

I have only just started reading this book, but love it already. The introduction is GREAT! You can read about the first half of it in the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon. The book may be too detailed for a casual reader, but to anyone studying this period of history it is invaluable, and you must quickly memorize the single page of abbreviations in the front of the book. One problem I have is that there appear to be no "notes" in the footnotes-section, simply references to publications that most people will have almost no ability to access. Frequently, the text will state something as a conclusion, without any background on why that particular conclusion was reached. In many, many cases there should be anywhere from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs of elaboration, not merely a reference to a specific page in some obscure text.

Mao Zedong’s notion that the population of China was expendable for the cause of revolution, no matter how many suffered, warrants further examination into understanding the destructive events surrounding this complex man. Yet, explaining an event as complex and lasting in impact as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in China is no easy task, let alone doing it through a book with writing that can be detailed and impartial in its bias, whilst simultaneously remaining engaging. Luckily, for those who wish to better understand what is arguably one of the most important events of the twentieth century, authors Roderick MacFarquhar and Michael Schoenhals have crafted a work of research into both the madness and sheer calculation that characterizes Mao Zedong’s last attempt to claim control over the Party that tried to sideline him, and the nation which viewed him as a god. The authors’ greatest strength in regards to their presentation of this historical event is their ability to not sensationalize the horror and brutality of what the young people of the People’s Republic of China were instructed to do by Mao and the “Gang of Four”, but to simply present what happened at the multiple levels of stratification involved which ultimately led to and created the Cultural Revolution. The exhaustive research of the authors provides not only accounts of specific events, but indeed, what the perpetrators of such a calamity were thinking as they masterminded this event, through access to journals, letters, and conversations. This book is an excellent choice not only for those who wish to learn more about the Cultural Revolution, but for any teacher or professor of Political Science, International Studies, History, or Sociology who is looking to enhance their students’ understanding of this event.

The best book I have read on the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The authors have added a great deal of depth to the subject. Their analysis of Zhou Enlai's role was different then the usual approach that makes him the good guy saving Mao's victims. The book is worth reading just for this view. The view of Mao is no surprise and should make sure Mao is seen as a strange driven unstable person who was addicted to revolution and bored with the work of organizing a successful society. He needed to be the center of attention. The short biographies at the end of the book is useful to keep the players straight and there are many people to keep track of. I often flipped back and forth from the body of the work to the glossary. There are many biographies of Mao but this one focuses on the last decade of his life organizing one last revolution, this time against his own fellow revolutionaries. Reminds one of Stalin killing off the Russian revolutionaries. Liu Shaoqi loyal #2's purging, imprisonment and horrible end makes a sad comparison to the adulation given the leader who does such damage to so many Chinese. Leads one to think nothing more dangerous then being a Communist who isn't top dog. Book is a must for any library about the history of modern day China.

—Vale, me voy. Suerte. Y gracias, Ana. Espero tímidamente frente a ella. No puedo evitar sonreír. Es obvio que solo estoy de visita. Desentono completamente. Respiro hondo y me levanto.

This was for my wife and she totally loves it. Non stop reading, day after day, she finished the three books in about a week or two. I didn't read the books but i will since she told me it was great for any couple, and the good storyline, the characters and, well the point of view about the relationships in this story. Many coments about Christian Grey states that he is like a model or standart for the perfect loverman or something, i don't now why, but i think i'll figure it out when i read this trilogy. Conclusion: My wife loves it, and that makes me happy. I think it was a perfect gift.

I haven't read it because it is poorly written, porn for grandma. But I gave it as a present to someone who wanted it.

Who doesn't love Christian Grey, I love it. Excellent book and excellent quality. I'm so happy with my purchase. I definitly would buy again.

Stress is the feeling you get when you’re taking on too much, or people are demanding on you too much. —ZOE, AGE 17 I would define stress as being overwhelmed with a certain problem or person. —ALIA, AGE 16 Stress is tension, whether emotional or physical. You can be stressed out about friendship troubles, or you can be stressed out about lack of sleep. You can get impatient in a long line at the grocery store, or your body can be stressed out by overexerting yourself in an exercise or sport. —GWYN, AGE 15 All great definitions. Here’s how the American Academy of Pediatrics defines stress: “[Stress is] the uncomfortable feeling you get when you’re worried, scared, frustrated, or overwhelmed. It is caused by emotions, but it affects your mood and your body.” That definition might be straightforward enough, but stress sure doesn’t feel straightforward to deal with. Yes, it’s a normal part of life, but that doesn’t mean it won’t take a toll. Let stress run rampant and your mind, body, and soul will pay the price. The Origins of Stress Have you ever been in a situation where you went from calm to terrified in a split second? Maybe you were jolted awake in the middle of the night by a suspicious noise coming from inside your house. Or maybe you stepped into a busy intersection just as a car darted out of nowhere and narrowly missed hitting you. Maybe you were water-skiing, and, as you waited for the boat to swing around and pick you up, your mind turned to the movie Jaws, and you nearly freaked out big-time. When you’re thrust into a situation that feels dangerous, scary, or potentially life-threatening, your body switches to autopilot, and your nervous system takes over. Once your brain makes an internal announcement that something is wrong, your body responds by automatically releasing the hormone adrenaline into the blood stream. That’s when the party really gets started. The adrenaline affects you by: ■ increasing your heart rate (so you can take in more oxygen in case you need to run or exert yourself) ■ raising your blood pressure (a result of your heart beating faster and your blood vessels constricting) ■ sending more blood to your muscles so you’ll be ready to react quickly and with power Your body also releases cortisol, another hormone that works with adrenaline to: ■ give you a quick burst of energy ■ improve your memory ■ increase your ability to withstand pain If you’ve ever experienced a surge of adrenaline, or an “adrenaline rush,” you might have noticed that things suddenly appeared to be happening in slow motion. Maybe you felt a rush of blood to your arms, legs, hands, or feet. Or maybe you broke out in a sweat, or suddenly felt shaky and nauseous. These are all classic symptoms of the “fight-or-flight response,” a subconscious preparation by your body to do what it takes—stay and fight or turn and run—to survive any situation. They are also the classic symptoms of what we call stress. In emergencies, stress can be a good thing. It’s a survival tool, and a pretty efficient one at that. Stress isn’t always a negative in your day-to-day life, either. It’s stress that gives you that extra oomph while you’re playing in the state soccer tournament, or when you’re pushing to meet an impossible deadline. Small amounts of stress can keep you on your toes and push you to perform at your highest level. But what happens when you’re dealt too much? When Stress Doesn’t Go Away Just as your body’s stress responses switch on during an emergency, they’re supposed to switch off once the crisis has passed. Your heart rate should go back to normal, the sweating should stop, and the queasy feeling in your stomach should vanish. But the problem comes in when your body repeatedly gets tricked into responding to stresses that aren’t life threatening. Anxiety about next week’s midterm can trigger the same fight-or-flight response as a serious threat. But since you don’t actually need your survival hormones to get through your midterm, you’re left with extra adrenaline and cortisol hanging around. The result? Chronic stress. Your body starts exhibiting classic stress symptoms all the time. Instead of giving you a boost to power through an emergency, the stress starts wearing you down. And that’s when the trouble begins. What Stress Does Being seriously stressed out can cause all kinds of not-so-pleasant side effects, including: ■ trouble sleeping ■ tense muscles and muscle pain ■ stomachaches, digestion problems, and/or constipation ■ headaches, including migraines ■ irritability and moodiness ■ feeling down about everything ■ impaired cognitive functioning ■ unexpected emotional outbursts (such as crying or laughing for no reason) ■ an irregular heartbeat or rapid heart rate ■ lowered immunity (being more susceptible to illness or rashes) ■ difficulty concentrating ■ acne Dealing with even one of these symptoms on a regular basis would wreak havoc on your peace factor. And when your stress runs rampant, it’s also potentially damaging to your long-term health. Overstressed teens are at a much higher risk for developing depression, panic or anxiety disorders, and drug abuse problems as adults. The Stress Roller Coaster Once you buckle up for a ride on the stress roller coaster, it can sometimes be hard to climb off. Here’s an example of how stress feeds on itself in a vicious cycle: You feel anxious about something → you lose sleep → you’re constantly tired → you rely on sugar and caffeine to perk you up → you become nutritionally imbalanced → you lack the energy to do anything about what you originally felt anxious about → you feel more anxiety and stress (and back to the beginning again) You’ve probably already come up with some healthy ways to release your stress, but sometimes you might be coping in unhealthy ways too—getting into fights or lashing out at parents and friends, keeping your emotions and anxieties bottled up inside, bullying other people, or experimenting with drinking, doing drugs, engaging in risky sexual behavior, or cutting. You can’t always control the stressful situations that life throws your way, but you can control how you deal with your stress. To find your best stress solution, you need to figure out what it is you’re so stressed out about in the first place. Read on to find out what teens everywhere say are their biggest stress sources. Chances are, you’ll realize you’re not alone.WHAT’S YOUR SECRET FOR STOMPING OUT STRESS? I write a lot of poetry and songs to relieve my stress . . . it helps to get everything out. —DEVIN, AGE 15 My technique for relieving stress is running on the treadmill and listening to my favorite music. Also, just reading a book or magazine while listening to music is stress-relieving for me. —SAMANTHA, AGE 16 I’ve kept diaries since I was eight years old, and I write almost every night. It relaxes me and helps me fall asleep. —ABIGAIL, AGE 18 I make sure I have alone time. —ALYSSA, AGE 16TIME-OUT: FACING THE FUTURE During the writing of this book, the US was slowly crawling its way out of a recession. The job market, especially for entry-level positions, is particularly tight, even with a four-year college degree, and students are drowning in loan debt that makes it more and more difficult for them to have a decent standard of living as young, independent adults. There’s no way to predict what will happen with the job market and economy in years to come, but the not knowing can be just as stressful, especially for teens looking ahead to what’s next. The truth is, it can be hard to dream big when everywhere you turn there’s a reminder about just how hard things can be. It’s enough to make even the most self-possessed, optimistic girl have a bit of a meltdown. LET IT GO There are many strategies to help you deal with future stress freak-outs, but the most powerful one is to let go of what you can’t control. Remind yourself that what happens in the future is no more in your control than whether or not it’s going to rain Sunday or which numbers will be drawn in the next Mega Millions lottery. By holding on to worry and stress over the “what ifs” (What if I can’t find a job? What if my career dreams don’t pan out? What if the economy tanks again and I have to live at home until I’m thirty?), you’re essentially trying to control the future, as if your anxiety is actually a super power you can use to will the future to align with what you want. Um, that doesn’t work. In fact, as I write in chapter eight, dwelling on fear and negativity can actually bring more fear and negativity into your life. And that’s pretty much the opposite of what we’re going for when it comes to reducing stress. So, let it go. And yes, I’m aware this is one of those easier-said-than-done kind of situations. So here are some more tips to make letting it go easier and, as a result, bring you more peace about what’s to come: Stay in the here and now. Since the past has already happened and can’t be changed, and the future is a great big unknown, the best bet to experiencing more peace in your life is to stay in the present. How you choose to feel and what you choose to do in this moment is really the only thing completely within your control. To stay in the here and now, really be “in it,” whatever “it” is. If you’re baking cookies, enjoy all the smells and tastes and textures that go along with that. If you’re dodging puddles in a cross-country meet, think about how your body feels as it glides down the path. When you find yourself spinning off into future unknowns, snap yourself back to the present. Go back to gratitude. As I write in chapter seven, gratitude is a great way to bring attention to what is working in your life instead of focusing on what isn’t or dwelling on unknowns that might feel big and scary. The simple act of taking five minutes to appreciate even little things you are grateful for can result in an instant mind shift. Get inspired by others. Read the memoirs and biographies of people who’ve overcome challenges in their lives and gone on to accomplish incredible things. Not only will this help you reset your perspective, but it will give you a burst of inspiration and the reminder that you can do anything you set your mind to. Be curious. Turning your worry into curiosity will transform the energy surrounding your thoughts about the future. Curiosity is about things like possibility, unlimited options, and what could be. And unlike the heavy anxiousness of worry, curiosity is light and exciting and hopeful. So instead of thinking thoughts like, I’m worried I won’t reach my future dreams, think I’m so curious to see where my passions and interests take me! And lastly . . . Remember that you are creative, resourceful, and whole. It’s true. You have what it takes to create whatever you want to create with your life. Trust in yourself and in your ability to make smart choices and figure it out as you go along.

Stress isn't a condition reserved solely for adults. Everyone experiences stress, from a grade school student worrying about a quiz in math class to a high school teen trying to figure out how they're ever going to survive school long enough to make it to college. And adults -- well, adults might have more stress, but they can't claim they're the only ones who do.Author Deborah Reber breaks stress down and makes it a bearable condition in CHILL. First, we find out what stress is. Then, we learn how we can, if not get rid of it completely, at least make it bearable. There are sections of the book dedicated to taking action: getting organized, learning to manage your time, realizing that it's okay to say "no." Then we learn the basics of looking out for ourselves: creating a support network of family and friends, and gaining perspective into the fact that sometimes we're going to need other people's help in getting over whatever it is that's bothering us. Then there's my favorite part, that of turning in and getting physical: learning that nutrition and exercise can help balance out our stressful lives, figuring out do-it-yourself strategies that can help in just about any situation, and even the importance of writing things down in a journal. We might not be stressing every day of our lives, but there will always be times when we do. And when that happens, be thankful that you have a book like CHILL to remind you of what's important -- taking time for you!Reviewed by: Jennifer Wardrip, aka "The Genius"

As exams approach at a breakneck pace and all those deadlines loom ominously over your head, you may find yourself more stressed than ever. We've all heard the stories, the advice, and the do's and don'ts. But what it usually comes down to is cramming everything that needs to get done is as short of a time as possible, because let's face it: your technique works.Well, sort of.In Chill, Reber offers a practical, sensitive, and very down to earth advice that can be of use of anyone. She knows that teens live in a world where the competition for everything--from yearbook mock elections to spots in college--is tough, and what's more, she empathizes and doesn't try to talk down to her readers. Instead, she asks the questions that matter to determine just how much stress you add on to your life, and offers up sensible ideas to help keep you organized and relaxed--with minimal effort, and in easy to adopt practices. From tips on how to de-clutter your hard drive to ways to organize your social life, Reber's advice will motivate and inspire to do more than just get it done, but get it done in a laid back and relaxed fashion.

Chill: Stress-Reducing Techniques for a More Balanced, Peaceful You by Deborah Reber is a great non-fiction pick for teens. Chill talks about different causes of stress, like homework, parents, friends, and getting into college, and ways to relieve or minimize that stress, such as journaling and talking to others. It also discusses time management, organization, even exercise and nutrition.Readers will come away from Chill with plenty of positive thoughts and new ways to de-stress. The book never feels clinical or dry. The author never talks down to readers, nor does she try to talk like them and be uber-hip. The writing is straightforward and positive throughout the book.Even though this book was written for teens, adults should check it out as well. Chill isn't just about high school worries - there are plenty of other sections from which grown-up multi-taskers could greatly benefit as well. For example, Chill encourages people to recognize the need to take time for oneself. It's okay to take a breather now and then, even when and especially when you have a busy schedule! When you get Chill, also pick up a new journal and some new pens. You'll be making organized lists and journal entries before you know it!

The title and cover of this wonderful book are a bit misleading. At first glance you might think it's about tension reducing techniques such as meditation, or listening to music.Instead you will find a book about how to get organized, how to say no to the things that are not important, and how something like journaling can not only help you organize your thoughts, it can help you express those feelings that build up inside you. While the book is written for teen girls, the advice would work for boys (not to mention adults).
