This book is different. If you are a young actor struggling with understanding playing action, sense memory, substitutions, or if none of these things are part of your process, then don't buy this book.... YET! Instead look into Uta Hagen's book, Respect for Acting, or perhaps even Robert Cohen's book, Acting One.This book assumes that the reader has been trained in modern acting theory, that the actor reading it has understanding of how to play and build a character, and yet still struggles (as we all do) with forms of "block". The author often uses the phrases/teachings of other acting teachers to point out that it is in fact the framing of some of these "tools" that leads to block. Not that the other theorist's ideas are incorrect, but rather that each actor needs to frame his/her process differently, and that the "target" dictates more of the game than we often think. Little of this is plainly stated in the book, much of it is implied, and if the reader hasn't the breadth of experience much of the potential firepower in this text may be missed. Each time you read it you will see another layer.It's a fantastic book for any actor trying to re-evaluate, or sharpen his/her process. It is loaded with truth.

As an actor, if you take the trouble to really assimilate what this author explains, you'll find it's not just obvious but a most invaluable source and thus unquestionably one of the clearest, most ingenious means of "finding yourself" amidst the occasional confusing acting scenes that could have you feeling you're lost. THAT in and of itself qualifies it as a brilliant road map for getting you back on track so you don't stay mired in "not knowing" how to proceed with whatever text you're struggling with. So glad my current acting teacher recommended it but then his own technique could very well be influenced by it. However, I would add that for as insightful and practical as the book is, the occasional digressive musings of the author can make the material dense and a little bit incomprehensible but despite all that do not at all detract from the book's overall greatness.Something in the book particularly resonated. When he stated the uselessness of the actor attempting to answer the classic "Who am I?" question I thought immediately of Daniel Day Lewis who operates in that very manner which at least in part accounts for his being the great actor he is.

This technique in this book is very similar to David Mamet's non-technique. The joy of both is how freeing they are onstage, the text of the play becomes like the net below you and the words and your fellow actors are all together in a high-flying trapeze game. It works even if you don't have any text -- in an improv situation for instance. It's hard to describe, actually, but it makes what could be a dead process come alive every night... and can scare the hell out of everyone around you if they don't understand what is going on. A lot of actors like the old way -- hit your marks, say the word, cock the eyebrow, turn here, pause...curtain. But if you use this technique, and play for the life-or-death stakes that Donnellan and Mamet espouse, well, you'll never be the same again. I highly recommend this book, it is easy to read and understand, but it deals with a highly sophisticated concept that, properly applied, will propel the actor right up off the high bar.

Of course I am not a high profile actor. It is my craft though and I seek as many avenues of improvement as warranted. The Actor and the Target is like a jewel in the sea of stage craft books. It is as stated by others not a book for the casual actor or many professional actors. I have sat in contemplation on many of the threads of exploration.If follows the narrative and practices of traditional methods of acting then turns it on edge to reveal a process of thinking that is new and practical, if you can step aside and improve your craft.

This book is really useful when looking to increase your skill in acting. It's an easy-to-understand, down-to-earth guide to some really helpful principles to base your acting on. I am studying acting at college right now, and our teacher is incorporating this book into our classes. Sometimes the author gets a little too dramatic and serious about his opinions on life and humanity, but if you just take what is useful to you from this book it can give you some good insights. I would recommend it.

'Use whatever works and throw the rest away', as they say. Unfortunately, I found this to be a very convoluted theory of the actor's craft - overly dense and hard to decipher. But if it works...

Best acting book! get it

I an still reading it and plan on reading it again. The author really knows what he's talking about and how to explain it so you can understand. I feel more confident, sure and understand more to acting thanks to this book.

Wonderful story! I really enjoyed her approach to sharing events in her life. What a tough cookie! I had no expectations that the book would be any more than what it was, a young, amazing girl telling her story as an athlete. Every once in a while I would remember that she is deaf and that would add to the incredible story, but she did not focus on that challenge; it was more about her journey in a very difficult and dangerous sport that she loves! I am so glad she retired in one piece and is giving back by teaching motocross to girls and women. You go girl!

My 16 year-old daughter is a reluctant reader at best, but a great motocross rider, riding since the age of 4. She has been fascinated by Ashley Fiolek since she was about 12, but never knew of her deafness until a couple of years later watching her on the podium! This is a well written biography that will interest most any child or parent for that matter. It shows the ups and downs of a child's motocross career from the first ride to a Pro career. It isn't a difficult read, but contains plenty of technical terms for readers familiar with motocross, while not confusing non-riders. I really enjoyed reading about Ashley's family's choices that helped her deal with her deafness and encouraging her unique talent. Well worth the read.

Bought this book for my 6 year old Daughter. Ashley is her all time favorite rider!!Ashley is her idol!!Great read, lots of encouraging words for younger girls as well as TRUTH and the hardship and sacrifices that goes into being a serious motocross competitor not just for the rider but their family as well. Ashley is an amazing talented rider and an absolutely wonderful role model for the younger female riders.

I absolutely loved this book! It's a terrific read for fans of motocross, but also tons of fun for those who don't know a lot about the sport - Fiolek does a wonderful job of explaining what certain motocross terms mean to welcome new fans. I've already read it twice. Fiolek's memoir is detailed and fun to read. It was worth every penny.

I enjoyed every page of your book; the ups and downs of motocross life, the successes, the setbacks all make it what it is. Your positive attitude and reflective nature make this book beautiful to read. As a woman who came to dirt bikes late in life, I crave female role models in this sport. Thank you for sharing your story, and I look forward to your next book! :-)

Good book

I was recommended this book by a friend. I knew nothing about motocross before reading it but love biographies about fascinating personalities. Ashley's story is really cool and inspiring and it's a great example of someone who took a disability (her deafness in this case) and was able to turn it into an asset.Great read, I recommend it!

About the Author

Dominique Smith is the director of student services at Health Sciences High & Middle College, where he also serves as a culture builder and student advocate. He is the co-author of Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management and holds a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California.Nancy Frey is a professor of literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. Before joining the university faculty, Nancy was a special education teacher in the Broward County (Florida) Public Schools, where she taught students at the elementary and middle school levels. She later worked for the Florida Department of Education on a statewide project for supporting students with disabilities in a general education curriculum. Frey is a recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Early Career Award from the National Reading Conference. Her research interests include reading and literacy, assessment, intervention, and curriculum design. She has published many articles and books on literacy and instruction, including Productive Group Work and Better Learning Through Structured Teaching.Ian Pumpian is a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University and has taught, supervised, and chaired dissertations of several San Diego lead principals and area superintendents. He cofounded Health Sciences High & Middle College and currently serves as the CEO/President. Pumpian served as the Executive Director of the City Heights Educational Collaborative where he assumed superintendent-level responsibilities over the educational programs of these 5,000 students, professional development for their 300+ teachers, and a comprehensive professional development school that annually involved more than 125,000 hours of SDSU faculty and student credential and advanced degree teaching, research, and practical activities. Pumpian has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and books. Douglas Fisher a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and is the recipient of a Celebrate Literacy Award from the International Reading Association, the Farmer Award for Excellence in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, and a Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Easy to read!

This book leads the education leader through a hierarchy of things to achieve: Physical integration, Social-emotional engagement, Opportunity to learn, Instructional excellence, and Engaged and inspired learners. The logic model works for me. The book includes useful examples of equity audits, which can supply useful data for forwarding the cause of your school. This is a significant contribution to the literature on social justice and equity, and provides an antidote for educators struggling to function in the current hostile political environment.

Required for a class, but was a good read.

Has many strips from authors other than Schulz.....and it is very obvious which are original and which aren't. None of the non-original ones claims to be by him but just a heads up that not all the strips are Schulz. I'd guess 1/4 are original, the rest done by others.It mentions this in the description but not in a way that let me know just how much was done by others

This is one of my favorite reference books as a Plant Manager while taking Lean initiatives, such as Standard Work and Continuous Improvement. I found that the quantitative sections are very useful to enhance analytical skills to take effective actions.Two suggestions to future versions. Firstly, a CD-ROM containing the working sheets in book will reduce work to duplicate by readers. Secondly, more quantitative examples are required to clarify concept in detail so that it might expedite learning (at least in Chapter 2 to 4).Overall, I recommend it to Lean leaders and Plant Managers.

I bought this book on a whim, persuaded that I had read it before. I was mistaken and pleasantly surprised by the book. For a change, it features a hero with body image issues and a heroine who is intelligent and active. The titular character is big. And dark. And ugly. He broods about this, not believing that anyone can look beyond this and see the beauty and love that lies beneath, just waiting to be awakened. Until he meets Jessica Trent, that is. She has the insight to realize what is hidden beneath the cover of a devil, and the ability to waken the angel buried inside.A truly delightful read, with enough spice to make the readers' hearts flutter, and enough smartness never to insult their intelligence. This is the first Loretta Chase novel I've read, but it is far from the last.

LORD OF SCOUNDRELS is without a doubt a beautiful love story and surely Loretta Chase's most beloved and popular romance of all time. It's a touching, humorous, and truly endearing romance and a re-read for me. The attraction, chemistry, passion, and love between Dain and Jessica is utterly breathtaking... Jessica is easily one of the top, if not best heroine I've ever come across. Dain on the other hand I never completely fell in love with and while I felt compassion for him as a child, the man was an entirely different matter. Overall he came off as too self-absorbed and pitying for me personally.With that being said, I still thought this was a breathtaking romance and can see what so many readers love about it, I just didn't think it was perfect. The ending seemed rather rushed, and I couldn't quite buy into Dain's turnaround regarding his son. Then there were the troublemakers who seemed silly and not quite fitting... All in all however, this is an unforgettable tale of true love and soul mates. Simply a remarkable story told by an amazing author, and one that will surely touch your heart. I would definitely recommend this book as well as its sequel "The Last Hellion" which I absolutely adored!

Lord of Scoundrels is a delicious, complex, wickedly fun and outrageous story.Lord of Scoundrels is also the story of an unloved boy who became an unlovable man. Or so Dain thought. From the heartwrenching prologue -also one of the best I've ever read - we learn exactly why Dain is who he thinks he should be. This dark and unforgettable prologue is always hovering in the reader's mind, so that when Dain acts like an overbearing brute, you know exactly why. As a reader, Dain never lost me, even at his worst.And, Jess. In all my life, Jess is going to go down as one of the best, most remarkable, strongest, smartest, and unabashedly stubborn heroines I will ever read. The way she worked to understand the man beneath Dain's beastly facade, her patience at working to the very root of his internal struggles, her unwillingness to be complacent, a victim, and the very fact she freaking SHOT HIM IN THE ARM, makes Jess unforgettable. Then there's the way Jess loved Dain. By the standards of Regency England, Dain was considered a big, ugly brute. He'd been ridiculed for his looks since childhood, and he believed that. But here's the deal: I didn't have a clear image for him in my mind, but I knew he WAS beautiful. And the reason why is, Jess thought he was the most beautiful, virile, overwhelmingly masculine man who'd ever existed. I don't honestly care what Dain looked like. I don't know or care if the hero is handsome or appealing, as long as the heroine does.I loved Jess and Dain. I loved them together. Theirs is very much a story of when Beauty tamed the Beast. It was a battle of wits, of two people who each wanted the upper hand, which almost always went to Jess. I love how she mentally tied him in knots, knew exactly how, when, and what to say to Dain, to bring out the man, the abandoned and unloved child, behind the beastly demeanor. I love how Dain tried so hard to hold the line on Jess, but almost immediately contradicted any harsh words or actions he directed her way.And Dominick's story, and how it changed Dain? Forget it. I was reduced to a crying fool.Lord of Scoundrels turned out to be one of my favorite books I've ever read. I cherish it, and will reread it many times in my life, as well as recommend the heck out of it. My only regret is that I will never again get that first time back.

SPOILERS INCLUDED BELOWThere have been worse heroes that I have read about then Dane but thankfully not many.He treated women, including the heroine, and his son, like dirt. He called his illegitimate son "it" as well as nasty other names ,for the sole reason that his child reminded him of himself. Just because Dane was neglected and bullied as a child does not given him a pass to treat others that way. He had to be forced by the heroine to providing his son with a home. If not for the heroine he would have ignored his son even though his son was basically homeless and living on the streets.Before the heroine Dane would only have smex with prostitutes. All women, even those who are not ladies of the night, he refers to as tarts and trollops.The heroine may have been "strong" when it came to a lot of things, she wasn't when it came to Dane. She bent over backwards for him while he was verbally abusive to her. She basically forced him to marry her. On their wedding night he got drunk with friends and ignored her and it was not until days later that she seduced him, giving him her v-card. She would not leave him but rather after married insisted on following him everywhere.I like my heroes to be jealous and possessive but the heroine was more jealous and possessive than Dane was, which made sense since before she married him she saw a lot of prostitutes on his lap and getting physical with him.The only thing that I liked about the hero was that he stopped having smex with OW after meeting the heroine. However it was not for lack of trying. Poor baby.
