A neat tying up of Jim Gordon's run as Batman for Gotham. Scott Snyder did a great job with Jim Gordon, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, and SPOILER Joker's short appearance SPOILER. However, Bloom as a villain, although powerful and terrifying, is rather shallow as a character as his powers seem undefined. I really liked the main story. Characters arcs get completed. Jim Gordon, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Jules, but Bloom and the other Robin seem unfinished. One of the better volumes in this Batman run. I recommend it.

This volume completes Scott Snyder's run as the main writer for the New 52 Batman series. I really liked it. Mr. Bloom is a pretty brutal villain. Jim Gordon does a fine job filling in as Batman while Bruce Wayne frollicks around with his amnesia. The end battle certainly has its epic moments. The only thing that I'm a little sad about is that this collection doesn't include Batman #51.This hard back collects Batman #46-50 and what is labeled as "A short story from Detective Comics #27" which is a short one-shot story that dabbles in pseudo time travel stuff.Although the main story concludes in #50, #51 gives a little more closure, it's not essential to the main story arc but it adds so much more to the ending of Snyder's Batman run. I consider Batman #51 a more suitable ending to this collected hard back, but you will not miss out on any major plot points if you don't read it.***********UPDATE**************There will be a Volume 10 that will include Batman #51, and #52.https://smile.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-10-Scott-Snyder/dp/1401267734

Even with DC Rebirth going on, i've been wanting to put my teeth into this volume for a while so that I could finally wrap up Scott Snyder's run on Batman before I moved onto the next phase of the Dark Knight. I was fairly critical of the previous volumehttps://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RMUUISVYAQO97/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1401266304which really came down to the fact that I felt as if it should have been longer. This volume fixes that. Place volumes 8 and 9 together in one book and you have a great story. The "Superheavy" arc as a whole is one of the best Snyder wrote in my opinion. I've seen a few people say that it had a lackluster finale, but I really didn't feel that way at all while reading it. The biggest point of contention for the arc going in is that fact that Batman is played not by Bruce Wayne or Dick Grayson, or even Terry McGinnis. It's Jim Gordon spending half of his time in a Batsuit that looks like some kind of robotic bunny. Give credit where its due though, it was certainly a new idea in a franchise that's been around for over 60 years. I myself didn't have much interest in it at first, but as I read volume 8 and as I was finishing up volume 9 I found myself really enjoying seeing Jim placed in this situation, having to stand up and not be the hero for Gotham City during the day, but the hero for the city at night. This is honestly the most interesting that Jim Gordon as a character has been in years now and its made even better because you've still got Bruce Wayne right alongside him, but its not the Bruce Wayne we know. As Alfred says, it's more like the real Bruce Wayne, the man that a young boy might have grown up to become had he never seen his parents gunned down in that alleyway one fateful night after a movie. So, not only do you get to contrast Jim Gordon between Old Bruce, you get to contrast Old Bruce with New Bruce, and you see the events unfold that eventually drive Bruce to once again become Batman. I particularly enjoyed how him deciding to do so was portrayed as both tragic and heroic, while at the same time not necessarily undermining Jim's time as Batman and what he was doing. Is Jim the equal of Bruce? Of course not, but he gives it his all and still manages to be just as integral to saving the day as Bruce is."But anyone could be who you are now! The one you were before, that guy, no one could be but you!"Numerous writers attempt to put their own spin on the Batman concept, to say something profound about the character that they believe to be unequivocally true. Snyder is no different and this is his statement in a nutshell. The core of this arc is about how no one can be Batman except for Bruce. Personally, I think that's bull, but I admire the way that Snyder goes about saying it and I think its well written. You really see this idea argued in-depth during the "Superheavy" arc by Jim, Duke Thomas, and a number of other people. The pinnacle of it is probably the machine that Bruce uses to restore his memories of being Batman, which is probably as comic book silly as you can possibly get. A machine imprinting random bodies/people with Batman's memories and skills so that there could not only always be a Batman, but so that there could always be a Bruce Wayne watching over Gotham City? Come on now lol I found that to be dumb, but like I said it wasn't badly written and it does say something about Bruce's dedication to the city and the idea that there must always be a Batman. Snyder even hints at tying the Joker into it as a constant presence in Batman's life.Speaking of the Joker, i've also been critical of how he continued using him as the major villain in different story arcs, so I liked how for the finale we got Bloom. Bloom really is the perfect counter to Snyder's Batman. Batman is someone that only Bruce can truly be, but anyone can be Bloom, which is why we never learn Bloom's real identity and Bloom's appearance and powers are unique and creepy in a way that draws the reader further into the story. You want to see more of him and hear more about what his plans are, but I also don't think he could ever work in another story after this one. Similar to Bane for Knightfall, this is probably going to be the best use of the character you ever get, the story that he was specifically created for. Everything that comes after is just going to fall short. There's another volume after this one, which i've already purchased, but it seems to me that you could probably skip it if you wanted to. By the end of this volume Bruce is Batman again, Jim is Commisioner, and everything is pretty much the same as it was before Snyder started, with a few things being altered, such as the Batsuit. Similar to Grant Morrison (And Snyder's miracle machine actually reminds me of a similar idea that showed up during Morrison's run) Snyder basically ends things by saying that the adventures of Batman will always continue, just under the pen of another writer. I could say more I guess, about how great the artwork continues to be, about the one shot that shows one of the future Batmen being "born" due to Bruce's machine, about Blooms seeds and the appearance of the Joker, but i'll leave that for future readers to discover on their own. Suffice to say that this is a great volume to read and have and a solid ending to Scott Snyder's Batman run. Overall, i'd say that this is probably my second favorite arc he wrote, right after Zero Year.

The villain, along with the artwork, make this story worth reading. It's from the days when Gordon on the mantle of Batman...which, strangely enough, did happen. Mr. Bloom makes a fearful bad guy and Scott Snyder writes really, really well.

Great art. Not a fan of the story. The clone machine side plot was terrible.

Incredible. This was just as intense, esoteric, and horrific as I was expecting, from Mr. Bloom's path of Doom to the secret machine that saves Bruce, I believe it is an adequate (re)addition to the Batman Mythos as well as a fine turnover to the new DC Rebirth. I'm really glad they included the "27" story of the secret to the reality of "Batman" at the end. -MIKE EYE

Bloom is a fine addition to the Scott Snyder Batman stories. Not as strong as Endgame or other previous works, but still great.

I have loved the previous 8 volumes, and this volume might be the one one I enjoyed the most. Mr. Bloom is a great character, very creepy. Amazing art, exceptional story.

Great closer for the new 52 run. Makes me want to re-read the entire story again. Only thing that disappointed me was Bloom. I wanted a more developed villain but instead I got more developed Jim Gordon, I'm ok with that. Awesome read though.

This is one of those books where I really did have fun reading. The book really try to help you understand the terms and provided flashcards to do so. The only problem I have is that the CD doesn't work and I bought the book as new. The book has a pretty comprehensive review session at the end of each section. Reading Chapter 1 and 2 really does help before moving on to other chapters.PROS+ Helpful+ Easy to read and find information+ Review sectionsCONS- CD doesn't work- Ordered new but came in the mail looking like it's been tossed around- Older edition of the book provide better flash cards than the Second edition. The flash cards on the Second edition feels cheap.

This is a good book for an introductory level course/self-study program. It breaks down the terminology by body system (one body system per chapter), so you know what parts of the body to relate the terms to as you progress through the book. This book is nicely organized, easy to follow, and easy to understand. It is extremely helpful if you are entering the medical field. It has flashcards in the back of the book that help you test yourself, but they are not indispensable. You could make them yourself. It is by far one of the best introductory texts available.

Was ok prefer the book.

This book is great. It is worth the extra effort to make this book work for you.

Perfect.

It's no exaggeration to say that Laura Vanderkam's writing has changed my life. Her earlier books forced me to confront my own part in procrastination, avoiding hard tasks and making excuses like "I don't have the time." This book - Off the Clock - crystalizes all her earlier writing into an easy-to-follow (though sometimes counterintuitive) set of principles for making the most of your time. The author is a busy journalist, speaker, wife and mother of four, so I suppose it makes sense that she's figured out the secret to feeling less busy while getting more done -- as the subtitle of this book says. If you only buy one productivity or time management book this year, make it Off the Clock. Highly recommended!

I consider Laura Vanderkam's work life changing. I took a cue from her book 168 Hours and created a 100 Dreams List the year I turned 40. I've been living fuller and more purposefully life ever since. With Off the Clock, she is helping me to tune into those experiences and helping me refine my approach to designing the life I want. With Vanderkam's help I am working to let go of the idea of time scarcity. It's an easy trap to fall into since busy seems to be a badge of honor. But my goal is to have more white space on my calendar (so I can be creative and experience the world around me) and to linger in moments that matter to me.If you can't remember on Monday what you did over the weekend, you need to read this book.If your days are flying by too fast, you need to read this book.If you feel like you never have time for the people or things you love, you need to read this book.

Both practical and philosophical, Off the Clock is my favorite Vanderkam book to date. It comes at just the right time -- as I'm trying to make the most of some big life changes. A great balance of interviews, data, and personal anecdotes, Off the Clock is full of ideas you can implement immediately, as well as ways to reframe the way you look at your time and your life. I'm a working parent with a creative side hustle, and this book makes me feel relaxed about what I want to accomplish, not anxious. Highly recommend, along with her life-changing older book, 168 Hours.

This is my favorite of Laura Vanderkam's books. It combines practical tips along with research and philosophical references and musings. This is so much more than a time management book. It really opened my eyes to seeing time and, consequently,my schedule differently. Looking at things weekly/monthly/by season has made a huge difference for me, as well as thinking about what I truly want to spend time on and making those things a priority. I'm fairly certain I highlighted something on nearly every page. I especially loved the parts about how to be sure to remember these great memories you're creating. The worksheets in the back were helpful in trying to implement some of the things she mentioned. The case studies and the time diary analysis were helpful in showing how other people view/spend time.

This book gave me some helpful insights into time and productivity. Before reading this I already considered myself fairly productive and wasn't sure what I'd get our of the book. However there are some very thought provoking concepts in ths book.I am charging ahead with one of the tips basically around doing a little every day. There are a few projects that seem to overwhelm...I would start and stop many times in the past few years. Thinking that I can just do a little each day (or week) has actually gotten me farther on these projects in the past 2 weeks than I have gotten in the past 2 years!

I am a professor of microbiology & infectious diseases. I have studied productivity approaches for many years now, and mentor postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on time investment - not time management. There have been many outstanding books over the years within this realm, but of all of the books I have read and studied (easily over 100), this book is clearly the most outstanding of them all. Laura teaches us to understand our relationship with time. As I mentioned, I am a strong advocate of time investment -- making sure you schedule your priorities first. Laura embraces this within the section on "tending your garden", but goes significantly beyond time investment. You MUST get this book! Her insights and approaches come down to one central thing -- make your life meaningful and memorable. Get the book -- a gem like this needs to be read over and over and should be on your coffee table, bookshelf, and in your shoulder bag. It truly is that good! Cheers to Laura Vanderkam on this masterpiece!

I an a mother of 5 boys who works full time as a college professor. This book helped me to analyze my time and deliberately put in more enjoyable time! I love the idea of not letting your spoiled, present-self control your narrative!

With non-fiction, if I come away from a book with one good idea I feel I've spent my money well. Vanderkam's latest left me with far more than one, but the idea that we really want more memories--not time--was particularly poignant.

This is an informative little book written in a very readable style, in which a "foreigner" can learn quite a bit about German behavior, attitudes and customs. Not surprisingly, the less you already know about life in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the more useful it is.One thing I don't much like is that the 77 brief articles are listed in alphabetical order by title, instead of by subjects or themes. Shouldn't "At the table" (6) and "Dining" (21) be grouped together instead of appearing 25 pages apart? And why not put something like "Greetings and common courtesies" (36) at the beginning of the book?Another problem is that some of the information has become dated. The introduction of the Euro has pretty much killed the discussion on currency, for example, and the abolition of customs and passport controls among the EU countries has advanced considerably since the book was published. The same is true for things like store opening hours and rules about having sales and giving discounts. These things are inevitable, of course, but they do affect the usefulness of the book.Nevertheless, this is an entertaining way to learn more about the people who live in the German-speaking countries of Europe, and it even boasts some humor. My favorite line is: "On a sweltering train the window remains closed because Germans seem to think that a draft will kill you quicker than heat prostration." How true!!

This is an excellent book covering many interesting topics that should be useful for those who are traveling there for their first time or their 15th time. It is all arranged very conveniently, alphabetically. Even though I have been there several times, there were many things I still learned. It is not meant to be an encyclopedia, but it is a very handy resource that I highly recommend. I love Germany and Austria, the people are very friendly, and this explains what to expect from business meetings to dining out to the grocery store, and everything in-between. Have a wonderful time, but read this first, and bring it with you as a handy resource.

I lived in Germany for over three years. My German acquaintances in general liked Americans; but they greatly disliked our cultural ignorance. I also did part-time work as a tour guide and a portion of "tour guiding" is to educate people on the culture, and saw the extent of this ignorance first-hand. While German/Austrian/Swiss society is in a "big picture" sense similar to American, (guilt vs shame-based culture, individuality vs collectivism) there are major differences in personal and business relationships. Anyone who really wants to know Germany or succeed in business dealings with Germans ignores these differences at their peril. This book does an outstanding job of clearly explaining all aspects of German society from Government through economy, consumerism, to social relationships. It also spells out the contrasts between German and American ways of thinking, and between German and Austrian/Swiss world-views. Bottom line is if you want a better vacation experience in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, a better business trip, or are just interested in other cultures, get this book.

This slim volume presents dozens of aspects of German culture. For example, why do Germans value privacy? Why do they always close windows when they feel a draft? I definitely learned a lot from this book. My only complaints is that it could have gone a little more in depth about the causes of German behavior. Also, this book is a little out of date. It was published in the 90's, so there is a lot of talk about Marks rather than Euros, and you read a lot about the reunification of Germany, which is not as hot a topic as it was in the 90's. Even with these weak points, I think you'll be able to learn a lot. I wish that the author would release a more up-to-date version, though.

Wow! I had many confirmations re: some aspects of the German people and gained an understanding of many more. This was a quick read, well worth the effort to gain understanding of a people group....for me, both ancestors and current friends.

This book is loaded with pertinent details, and the information is presented in a readable, interesting style. The book is well organized so that you can use it to reference particular subjects, like dining, public transportation, the government, etc., or you can read it like a book, chapter by chapter. Very well done. Inside Germany would have been a great title too! I discovered many new things that should have been apparent to someone who has lived in Germany as long as I have.

I love this book! I am taking a German language class just for the fun of it, and I have since become more interested in Germany and German culture. This book is very interesting and has quite a bit of factual material. It is organized well (alphabetically by subject), and each section is short enough to read a few at a time, or a section or two while waiting in line or on my lunch break. The material presented is fascinating and gives you a look at a culture that appears similar to our own on the outside, but on the inside has many differences, and just as many 'idiosyncrasies' as our American culture.

I bought this before my first trip to Germany. I found it interesting and very useful. It always helps to understand another culture and avoid making unintentional faux pas.

Review

“A fascinating mash-up of literary analysis and neuroscience. Highly recommended for Austenites and pop-psychology fans, as both will find plenty of original, acute concepts to pore over.” - Booklist“Recommended for Janeites and general readers interested in social intelligence―one needn’t be a huge Austen fan to enjoy this odd combo. Particularly recommended for those who would delight in using the DSM-5 to diagnose Persuasion’s Sir Walter Elliot with narcissistic personality disorder.” - Library Journal“A psychotherapist and an English professor, Jones wears both hats simultaneously to describe why Jane Austen’s novels appeal to the human brain, which craves sociability.” - New York Times Book Review (New & Noteworthy)“Brilliantly original and insightful, this fusion of psychology, neuroscience, and literature provides a heightened understanding of one of our most beloved cultural institutions―and our own minds.” - Paste (Best Books of December)“Being a Jane Austen fanatic isn’t required for appreciating this fascinating book; Jones, a psychotherapist and former English professor, will win over the initially unconverted by the book’s end. Readers will find this book well worth the generous investment of time required and finish it better informed about both the science behind human behavior and the artistry behind Austen’s work.” - Publishers Weekly“Jones has created an absorbing study of the ways our most beloved characters teach us about human interactions and social settings. An accessible introduction to the science of mind and the history of behavioral psychology, written in a warm, engaging, personal style.” - Historical Novels Review“Drawing on psychology and neuroscience, Jones shows that Austen’s works were ahead of their time in terms of how they portrayed social relationships. In other words, it offers a scientific explanation for why we’re so obsessed with Emma, Elizabeth, and Anne.” - Real Simple

There are many reasons to read this wonderful book: a passion for Jane Austen, a passion for the human brain, questions about how we work and why we work so well, or fail to work so well, together, as people...or curiosity about life, love, empathy, resilience...Wendy Jones presents an elegant, efficient, nuanced, and rigorous account of what current science knows about (and what it doesn't know about) the human brain as a social tool and social product. She also presents an efficient, efficient, nuanced, and rigorous account of Austen's artistry and imaginative world. And she does the one so well because she does the other so well; she does both well because neither is a vehicle for the other and both are served by her deep care and engagement. The books of pop. science I know tend to repel me slightly by their sloppy metaphors, grotesque analogies. Often (not always of course) the scientists or journalists who write them care so much about the science that they care too little about whatever it is they need in order to make the science come alive. But Jones cares about Austen as much as she cares about the science, so when she tells us about neuroscience through careful description of the characters and language of Austen's novels, she does justice all around. The books about character and literature can repel me slightly because they pretend to a level of analytical rigor that divests them of humane engagement, or they reduce analysis to the level of second-rate gossip. Here again, Jones triumphs: the neuroscience affords a rigor that is humane, subtle and surprising, and the characters emerge with greater depth. What is best is that she can reconcile Austen's moral universe to the best neuroscience accounts; the virtuous among Austen's characters are destined for happiness on account of their virtue, because that virtue, Jones persuades, owes something to a happy course of neurological functioning. The jump is not from our scientific "is" to Austen's moral "ought," but rather from Austen's moral "ought" to our scientific "is."This book is deeply intelligent, lucid, and personable--there's no nonsense about it and modesty in its most insightful claims. Jane, one thinks, would have approved.

I would like to say Wendy's writing style in this book follows a very new trend in the publishing industry. She has superior academic knowledge but chooses to write not only for other academics but to the fans of Jane Austen as well. She takes her knowledge to a broader audience, one that is thirsty with more knowledge of Jane Austen and her characters but cannot understand the stiffness of the academic writing. With a voice that is clearly full of admiration as a fan, she delves into the reason why Jane Austen is a unique writer with the power to cross all kinds of barriers even 200 hundred years after her death reaching the status of pop star and breaking records after records. She shows us Jane's emotional and social intelligence, way beyond her years and time. You will feel smarter after reading it but you will have fun as well. She makes it fun and analyzes juice bits we all wondered about or missed entirely. Do you have to be a fan of analysis and therapy? Probably, but I bet you love to talk about Jane's characters as real people - at least most of her fans do. So imagine taking them to a therapy session and discussing their behavior? This is what I felt reading her book. I hope you do too. Jane on the Brain: Exploring the Science of Social Intelligence with Jane Austen

What grabs me most about this book is its accessibility. Dr. Jones is a shrewd and witty explainer. She explains mind-brain science to Jane Austen fans and Austen’s novels to scientists – and everything, excitingly, to general readers. There is no lit. crit. jargon here and a minimum of hard scientific terminology, although there’s plenty to be learned about how specialists think the mind and brain work -- neurologically, cognitively, affectively, and (above all) socially. For “social intelligence” is what Austen’s novels are all about, on this showing, and Jones is a learned and humane advocate for using it to understand literature and other people. And if “empathy” is the keyword for what people show when they’re understanding, loving, healing, and teaching each other, then intelligent empathy is what Jones shows for Austen’s most memorable characters and for her own readers alike. Brilliantly written, and a delight to read!

Jane on the Brain is a lot of fun to read. I’ve only read one Jane Austen novel, but I was motivated to immediately watch 3 movies of her other books so I could get more into Wendy Jones’ book. Jane on the Brain is smart, funny in places, and always friendly in its tone. It was like talking with a friend, a friend enthusiastic about the topic. The author’s love for both the mind-brain connection and for Jane Austen is evident. The best part was that the book prompted me to think about my own emotional life and look at how I might do things better. This is a book that both entertains and informs.

As a literary scholar, mind-brain science expert, and lifelong devotee of Jane Austen, Dr. Wendy Jones is uniquely capable of writing this refreshingly clear, impeccably researched, and charmingly illustrated (by the author’s daughter!) book. Jones offers subtle and poignant readings of Austen’s works, while also lucidly explaining concepts from mind-brain studies that help us to understand the science behind what Austen’s readers have long sensed intuitively—that Austen knows human nature and that she also knows us. Readers of this work will discover that Jones shares Austen’s great gift of empathy, and, like Austen’s readers, will be able to experience the joyful feeling of “feeling felt” by an author who truly knows us.

This whole series of books is very well written. They are for adolescents, but are great for adults too. I have read Bob Dylan's other biographies, but enjoyed this just as much,

I bought several of these for my 12-year-old daughter to read. My wife ended up reading them as well. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed all of the "Who Was...?" books and learned new things about each of the people or bands we got.

It's good

I read this to my five year old I'm a life long Dylan fan and now so is she! I even learned some new things about Bobby. Glad I got it

My second grader is using this book for a research project. It is easily accessible for kids, but does not pay nearly enough attention to his music career and its impact. It doesn't really admit the existence of the social movements to which his music became the anthem. While I can understand not wanting a lot of heavy-handed political commentary in a book for kids, you can't really understand Dylan without at least touching on it.

Bought this to read to my grandson.Colorful pictures.Haven't yet read it to the boy but imagine he will enjoy the story time.

This was pretty good but will have to be revised now that Dylan has won the Nobel Prize. I also noticed that the author perpetuated the story that Dylan ripped off Dave Van Ronk's version of "House of the Rising Sun," and never said he was sorry. On the contrary, Dave van Ronk tells a different story in his memoir, The Mayor of MacDougal Street [2013 edition]: A Memoir. On pages 177, Van Ronk explains that Dylan asked Van Ronk, "Hey, would iot be okay for me to record your arrangement of 'House of the Rising Sun?'" Van Ronk said he was planning to record it himself, and then Dylan said, "Uh - oh," and explained he'd already recorded it. It is true that Van Ronk got mad at Dylan, but Van Ronk explains that, thanks to the intervention of a friend, "Bob and I shook hands, with Cohen looking on like the adult conciliator of a schoolyard punch-up, and that was it." Van Ronk explains that he later stopped playing the song because people thought he was copying Dylan, and then Dylan stopped playing it because people thought he was copying the Animals, who later recorded it and made a hit out of it. But that's another story.

I'm a big fan of the Who Was/What Was series. My kids have easily read over 50 of them. This one caused some disappointment because it included the fact that one of his wives had been a 'playboy bunny'. It was an unnecessary piece of info for kids who are 6-8 who shouldn't know what a playboy bunny is. That fact truly did not belong in this book.Overall I think this was the least enjoyed of all the who was/what was books. The author didn't link a lot of info together in some parts and it seemed like he was just listing info he researched instead of making a story out of it.
