This is my second copy of this book. I originally bought it in my youth, but that copy got tattered and destroyed over the years. This is a great resource if you like Zeppelin. Hey Hey What Can I Do isn't in there, but a lot of the good ones are.
some songs not edited correctly.. some pages are loose.
Purchased as a Christmas gift for my granddaughter--she was thrilled!
just like the one I had in the 80's
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS HUNK OF JUNK!!!!! IT DOES NOT HAVE WHOLE SONGS IN IT AND THE PARTS THAT ARE THERE ARE TOTALLY WRONG!!!! THIS IS THE WORST TAB BOOK I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!
This was recommended by a friend and its all it is cracked up to be. It got to me faster than expected.
Wow. This thing is still around?! This was the only Zeppelin book out there when I first started. In fact, I think for a long time, it was the only book that had anything transcribed note for note for guitar in tab at all. You could get songbooks for just about any album ever made, but they were always Piano and Vocal. The top line was the melody with lyrics, then you had a piano arrangement right below that. More often than not, the melody was worked into the piano score as part of the arrangement, so the end result had very little in common with how it was actually played on the record. That's the format most of this book is in.It's mystifying to me that it took publishing companies so long to figure out beginners might want to learn exactly what is being played on some of their favorite records. Not just guitarists, but all musicians. Even well into the eighties, there was virtually nothing like that available. The thing that made this book a must have back in the day, was a nearly complete transcription (no solo) of Stairway to Heaven. That was mana from the Gods back then and you did what you had to do to score a copy. There are one or two others in the book, but they don't matter - the Stairway transcription was the thing.Budding guitarists (myself included) would sit at home learning some part of the song, then run down to the nearest guitar store so we could show off our new passage - not knowing that everybody in the store not only already had the same book, but could probably play the song better than us as well. If you saw Wayne's World and didn't get the "No Stairway to Heaven" joke, this is where it originated and why it resonates with so many of us old timers. Most of us have been both Wayne and one of the annoyed patrons in the store at one time or another. As for the rest of the book ...Most of the notes to most of the songs are written in there somewhere, but there is nothing to tell a guitarist where or how to play them. You are also completely on your own once the vocal starts. For that, back in the day, you had to go see the band live or catch a art house screening of The Song Remains The Same, then kind of piece it together when you got home and it was still fresh in your mind.I remember working my tail off on the Rain Song with that book. I thought I had it down using open chords in beginning, then sliding up to the tenth fret to play the accompaniment under the vocals. When I saw Zeppelin live, I fought my way up to the front so I could see what he was doing during all my favorite songs (I did that with every guitarist I admired). When they did The Rain Song, I was shocked to find out that he wasn't doing anything even close to what I had come up with. I had no idea he was using an altered tuning and it took years before I had found it out. This book almost single handedly made me want to get good enough to where I could pick stuff out by ear.For me, this book is a trip down memory lane. I did learn to play some of my first Zeppelin songs with the help of this book. Even though most of what I figured out wasn't the way Page played it and there weren't any solos or fills, there are still some things I do decades later that I came up with trying to ape songs out of this book.I'll give it five stars for myself and my own personal memories, but there is no way I can recommend it to anybody with a genuine interest in learning how to play Led Zeppelin songs on the guitar. Seriously. Any other book or DVD you can get out there right now is better than this. Because of that, I couldn't possibly give it more than one star, though I would give it less if I could. If this book has any value at all, it's to make young players understand how lucky they are to have so many great resources to learn from.
I bought this book a long time ago because it was the only book around that showed bass parts, but there are much better sources for these songs now. Most of the solos are absent, beginnings/endings of songs are missing, or just plain wrong. Only good for the most rudimentary covering of these songs - not even very good as a "fake" book, in my opinion. I remember starting out as a bass player and being very frustrated because what I played from this book sounded nothing like the record. "Since I've Been Loving You" isn't bad (and one of the few solos included), but most songs here are 3 pages, no more. My favorite gaff is the lyric "Hey Baby, Oh Baby, Pretty Baby,La La La La La La La La" in "Black Dog", which gave me the first clue as to the shoddiness of this book. It was published by Superhype Publishing, which was set up by Zep's manager Peter Grant, so this book is an indication of the regard he and they gave their fans.
