This is an engaging, well-researched book about some of Egypt’s best-known queens, from Tiye to Nefertiti to Cleopatra.My favorite chapter, however, profiles Hatshepsut, who reigned for more than twenty years - one of only three woman to rule Egypt in three millennia. She was a prolific builder and one of her greatest architectural achievements was her own memorial temple at Deir el-Bahri. But she was a controversial leader, and when her step-son took her place on the throne, he literally did everything he could to erase all memory of her, including walling up her obelisks and chiseling her name off of her monuments, leaving a huge Hatshepsut gap in Egyptian history.I also enjoyed learning about Queen Tiye, the wife of Amenhotep III (he ruled for forty years), the mother of Akhenaten, and the grandmother of Tutankhamun, who we all know as King Tut. Beautiful, intelligent, and influential at her husband’s court, she was the first woman whose name appeared on official documents.I’ve read other books about Egypt, but few of them mention Egyptian women, which makes this book one of my favorites.I recommend it. Recommended.
I enjoyed this book! While ancient Egypt left many artifacts, personal information about Egyptians is scarce. The author is an expert in this history, pulling together and comparing multiple sources and interpretations and ending with a fascinating book.I will read this again!
