I never knew green peppers were more common than red ones or tomatoes as a reflux trigger! I can’t wait to share the ideas and insights with my family. We first read Dr. Wei's book, "A Healthier Wei" on a recommendation from a friend as our preschooler has been diagnosed with chronic croup (over 12x/year). We then saw this book highlighted in our local newspaper. We ordered it the same day and read it in one sitting. What a lifechanging book for both our son and our lives as his parents. Our child has had a near constant cough for 3 years. We have been to two ENT's and to the pediatrician more than 30x in that timespan and we were always either told chronic croup or cough-variant asthma. Our child has a noisy INHALE - asthma is a noisy EXHALE but we were just sent on our way with a different steroid or nebulizer medication. After reading this book the very next day we started the 2 week alkaline-heavy diet. The night cough disappeared in 4 nights. We are still hearing the daytime cough once or twice a day (we are 3 weeks in) but we just got back from seeing Dr. Wei (we are lucky that she practices only an hour from our home) and she told us it will take awhile for that to subside as he is now very susceptible to coughs but in time he won't cough for every little thing. We feel so blessed this book became available when we were at the end of our rope. No one in our house has slept well for 3 years - due to all the coughing. We are also mad - mad at all the medication we pumped into our kid when it was just us giving him yogurt before bed because he was hungry! What a simple fix! Why wasn't diet a part of the conversation the FIRST time we took him in for croup? Each time they said he had a virus - even when we said there was no fever or runny nose. This book should be mandatory reading for any parent whose child coughs AND for all pediatricians. It is sad that they do not know this very important information.

This book is seriously a life-saver! I had reflux growing up and I'm a singer and it seriously impacted my voice, but with these techniques and recipes I'm doing so much better and I have a healthier voice and healthier life. A must read.

I was surprised to learn how many medical ailments kids struggle with that are due to acid reflux. Dr. Koufman writes with expertise about how the right nutrition (at the right time of day, it turns out!) is the foundation for health, and guides us right through to some amazing recipes!

It was pretty generic and I think other books would be better if you write picture books. I do not feel that I learned much information that I can actually use.

I bought this book because it was a suggestion in another book. Although this has a lot of terrific information, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for in regards to the processes of writing and selling books. Perhaps it is because I have written books and sold them on my own already that I didn't find some of the information especially helpful. It is probably a pretty good book for an absolute beginner except that it is very opinion based. The copyright IS 1994 so the information might be completely accurate for the 1990s. However, I don't believe that getting published is based on knowing certain people or going to certain types of meetings, etc. I know there are a lot of other options out there, but if you are like me and are at the point of just wanting to make sure you have a good outline or your book is designed correctly or whatever is needed to submit then I think the better option would be to just get a book about agents and then find out their requirements.I don't want anyone to think that I am saying you should NOT get this book if you feel you need it. I just think if you already have some experience in the children's picture book market that you might want to find something that is more focused on what you are specifically looking for. If you don't have any experience in the children's market at all, though, then this is probably a good book to get.

This book is well written and easy to follow. It has step by step ideas on being a published writer of children's picture books and more.

it sounded like this would be a bunch of fill-in-the-blank letters for kids to send home from camp. It is, of sorts, but was not as expected.While there is a place to put an address and there are fold lines to send these as is, i'd be surprised if the flimsy paper held up in the mail. You're meant to fold them over and secure with the included stickers, but that leaves the sides open to catch & tear on other, more sturdy mail pieces.Also, this really reads more like traditional Mad Libs. The 'instructions' say that you can have a friend read the categories (adjective, adverb, etc.) or fill them in yourself. I expect the former will be more fun than the latter, but, because the 'letters' are very specific situations, they won't give the recipient much information at all.I don't know if my niece will send these as letters, though I expect she may enjoy them as one should enjoy Mad Libs with friends.Still, it felt somewhat redundant to have bought this along with the Camp Daze Mad Libs. They're pretty much the same sort of thing.Not worth returning, I still think they are fun, but I wouldn't make them a staple for campers and don't expect to buy this again. I'll just buy the Camp Daze Mad Libs for future campers.

I own several books on science fun for kids. I consider this one of the better ones for ages 9-14. Although there are some ideas carried through several pages, almost every activity stands on its own. Each concoction is presented on its own page with a catchy title like "Soda Slobber" and sections headed "What You Need," "What You Do," and "Why It Works." I liked the scientific explanations--very clear and readable. There are also several one-page articles like "What Makes Your Pop POP" that go into more detailed explanations of the chemistry behind the concoctions. The concoctions mostly consist of experiments with acid/base reactions, air pressure, liquid densities, Ph indicators, and carbonation, plus recipes for polymers, crystals, paint and invisible ink. The text stands on its own; the kid-friendly illustrations are merely decorative. Some recipes do require ingredients that are not readily available every house, such as citric acid or tincture of iodine, but the book mentions in general terms whether they can be purchased in a drugstore or grocery store. A lot of the experiments involve things that splash or are otherwise very messy, but the reader is cautioned to do them outside. I am looking forward to using the geyser made from soda pop and lifesavers with my day camp geology classes--I expect it to be a highlight of the class. And although many of the activities can be found in other books (is there a kids' chemistry book anywhere that does NOT tell how to make slime, create a baking soda volcano, or separate the colors that make up black ink?), the geyser, the Air Freshener Bubbles (made with vanilla extract), and Tie Be Gone (where you dissolve a piece of old clothing) are three activities that I do not recall seeing in other books.

We have done a few of the activities and have enjoyed them. We were excited to see that most of the ingredients used are things we have at home. We have tried many different books and science kits and have been disappointed to find that the materials were hard to find or expensive. I love the way it is written. Fun to read and includes a "Why it Works" section for each to explain the chemistry involved. My daughter is using this book and it 6 years old. We do the activities together and this is exactly what we were looking for. I am sure that older children will enjoy as well.

I checked this book out of the library when I needed ideas for experiments to use with elementary age students in a summer enrichment course in chemistry. I liked the book so much that I ordered my own copy. I used a number of the experiments from the book. The experiments are clearly explained and are easy to duplicate using simple chemicals you can buy at the grocery store (and probably already have in your home). The pictures and writing style are light-hearted, which makes this book a fun read.

Younger tweens and older kids (maybe 8-13 or so) had a blast with this - For the most part, everything you need for all these experiments are already in your kitchen or elsewhere in your house, so you don't need to go out to try and find obscure random ingredients that you'll never use again. The rest of the items can be found at your friendly local megamart or pharmacy. It's so much better than a chemistry kit, where once you use up the provided chemicals, you're done. This book gives you the principles and the recipes - the what and the why. And, yes, some of the things are messy - but that's why kids like it so much. What better way to learn science than to have fun doing it? Yes, some adult supervision is recommended / required, but honestly, you won't mind - because you'll have fun too (as long as you don't mind occasionally temporarily making a mess). Highly recommended.

We continuously use this book over and over again. It is great for summer projects to keep the kids busy and we all have a blast with the experiments. The kids even use the book for the class science experiments and they are hits with their classes! Thank you!

On page 28 of this book, a project calls for adding ammonia to "liquid fabric whitener."I am very concerned that this is not a specific enough designation for some shoppers, and they might end up using bleach product containing chlorine instead of the old-fashioned bluing that is presumably intended.There are far too many products with "whitens" as one of the claims on the label. Many contain chlorine. Mixing chlorine and ammonia releases a deadly gas.Anyone seeing a copy of this book in a store, library, school, or private possession should make sure that page 28 has a note added to clearly state that ***No bleach or other chlorine containing product should be used in this experiment - that is not what 'fabric whitener' means - chlorine plus ammonia can KILL***Aside from that, tho book looks nice. With the proper cautions, it may be a five star book.

Appearing at the beginning of the annual cycle that starts with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, three of these four new titles focus on Jewish holidays and holy days, while Friedland's concentrates just on the Sabbath. Greene's book, a revision of her 1985 title, is by far the most ambitious of the group, with more than 250 recipes (80 or so entirely new, the others thoroughly revised) for all the major holidays and some minor ones, and including Israel's Independence Day as well as religious celebrations. A cooking teacher and the longtime food editor of the Baltimore Jewish Times, Greene also offers extensive background on each holiday, and her diverse recipes are from all around the globe. Highly recommended. Recently, a growing number of Jews have found themselves returning to their religious roots and observances they have let lapse, making Friedland's book on celebrating the Sabbath particularly timely. A cookbook editor and author of The Passover Cookbook, Friedland presents 175 recipes for the three meals of Shabbat (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, and the "third meal," marking the end of the Sabbath later on Saturday). Pretty picture book, but don't expect a how to on decorating for the holidays.

My favorite Holiday book and an appreciated gift.

Rita Milos Brownstein brings her skills as a graphic designer and art director to this lovely and useful book.Her publisher compares reading it to having Martha Stewart as your neighbor -- good call.Some of her ideas include a honey tasting for Rosh HaShanah; collaged felt flags for Simchat Torah; cute and colourful shalach manot and costumes for Purim; a glue-gunned square matzo vase for Passover; and bird seed balls for Shabbat Shirah.85 full-colour photos enhance the text.

I've turned to this book again and again for Jewish holiday celebrations, and it often has lovely ideas. Just as often, some of them strike me as rather improbable and silly. On the plus side, the sukkahs she describes making are lovely interpretations of the idea, but on the minus side, trying to follow her directions to actually construct one will make you crazy. BELIEVE ME. I've used some of her ideas for Rosh Hashanah cards and been pleased with the results, but the Purim costumes and mishloach manot baskets mostly seem silly. And make your own journal for Yom Kippur? I don't know, I'm always way too busy to mess with something like that. Many of her recipes are surprisingly delicious, especially her orange-chocolate hamantaschen and the raspberry linzer-torte hamantaschen...YUM! So while it's not always consistent, I am glad to have it in my library nonetheless.

I turn to this cookbook often, not just for the holidays. The recipes are delicious and this is one of those highly visual books loaded with color photos. The matzo ball soup makes the best chicken soup I've ever had. I make it with variations (barley, wild rice) every month. I love this book and am delighted to have found Rita Brownstein. I hope she writes more books. I'll be waiting hopefully.
