For the money, about $6.00, this version of the NABRE (or the St Joseph's Edition - Medium size) is very hard to beat. Both this version and the St. Joseph's have the same book introductions and footnotes. Even if you are not Roman Catholic, this is a great bible to get and to learn from. It has excellent introductions, notes, and cross-references. It is a very well-done, practical edition, designed to help you efficiently learn from the Bible. If, as you read, you also read the notes and follow the cross-references given, you will (perhaps to your amazement!) learn so much more from your reading than you could if you were simply reading along in some other version without the notes and cross-references. There are connections you will make and new things you would never guess at if you simply read a Bible without all these notes and references. My favorite translation of the Bible is the Revised Standard Version (and the JB Phillips' New Testament), but as far as I know, only the NABRE comes with the extensive notes and cross-references printed here - I usually read from this version because it provides so much more information - it is in depth without being overwhelming or difficult to comprehend, and helps one to really make connections, understand, and get a grasp on what one is reading, and importantly the context of what one is reading. ... Another beautiful version to read from is the Douay-Rheims. But for understanding, read and study, - or as someone once said, hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest - this version first.Some other considerations - this version (ISBN 9780529064844) versus the St. Joseph's Medium sized (ISBN 9780899429502): This version, the one being reviewed above with the red cover, has, in my opinion, a slightly more readable font and text layout, but the St. Joseph's has more illustrations/maps and a some extra essays/documents at the beginning and a nicer cover image - a color photo of flower covered hillside leading down to Lake Galilee in springtime. This version has a list of all the Popes in the back as well as tables of parables and miracles. The St. Joseph's has a Sunday readings lectionary (useful to have) and a "Bible Dictionary". ... So, this version - slightly nicer font, parables and miracles table, list of Popes, simple red cover. St Joseph edition - nicer photo cover, extra essays in front, more maps, illustrations, Sunday lectionary. ... At these prices, under $10 each, I'd say just get both.

I purchased these books for our church because its the most recently revised version of the NABRV approved by the US Catholic Bishops, and the book is very inexpensive. However there was a drawback to the price. The font is very difficult to read by both middle/school students and older adults because it is so tiny. Each book of the Bible has well-written summaries with good information. However, for youth, and, adults too, I have recommended spending a little more money on youth Bibles such as the one by St Mary's Press. The font is larger and they include many more informative articles and commentaries scattered throghout the text which are very well written and highlight further text being read. They also have a few illustrations and additional references which most find helpful.

This is the current version used by American Catholics. I have two now. The first is getting marked up from my Bible study group, so we bought one for the family. It has several helpful indices for finding what passage you are looking for. Plus, the notations on each page are currently relevant in explaining cultural phrase and dialect that sounds awkward. The notations also explain places and people, making the reading easier. Handy edition, I highly recommend it.

I decided that the number of positives out weigh the negative. The negative being the font is small and so can make reading difficult. The positives though are many. A lot of great clear explanations to help understand the time, culture, and translations to english from an early greek or hebrew text. The book is small enough to make it easy to carry, and that is without taking 7 books and some additional text from the old testament. I have a few other bibles which are much larger, and easier to read but getting this was purely for easy to carry, mark up and write with out feeling guilty about destroying a more expensive bible version.

The type font is extremely small and disappointed in the size of the book. It’s more like a pocket size book for reference than an actual book for extended reading. The sellers description is accurate, so the blame belongs on me, because I prefer a book that I can lay in my lap to read and not hold close to my face.

This bible has the best reference material of any anywhere. The Council of Bishops spent 25 years working over the text and providing scholarly notes and reference and cross references. Only thing that makes it a little difficult to read is the notes are in parallel columns and you sometimes have to find the follow on text.Great paperback for next to nothing in price.

I like that this is so affordable but the paper is a dull yellow-gray and the font is such that many letters are squished together and touching each other.I dont even wear glasses and my eyes feel strained after a few minutes. No other book does this to me.Its also quite bulky. Im guessing this is some kind recycled newspaper material. Its roughy and floppy, thick and heavy.The translation itself and the notes are great. Its just hard to use. I looked at it in 2 different bookstores since buying it online and its like this new.Just not very user friendly.

It includes cross references so you can actually see the Old Testament versus Jesus quotes in his ministry. It also includes commentary on difficult and contested verses that help to clarify common questions we have when reading the sacred text. This is a must have for Catholics or anyone who is studying modern translations of the Bible

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook!! I have purchased at least 5 of them for gifts and I have gotten very positive feedback from the "receivers". The recipes are delicious and very nutritious. Yes, some of the ingredients can be pricey, but you can find great deals on line or at Costco's. And when you come right down to it, we NEED to become more aware of WHAT we are putting into our bodies. I really like how the book is illustrated with the pictures, including the food values. I never knew there were so many ways to cook and bake with quinoa. i have made some of the salad recipes for potluck get together's and people raved about the taste.

This book offers a wide variety of recipes for working with this ancient, yet relatively unfamiliar to modern Americans, grain. I have tried several recipes and thought the outcomes were successful. It will be interesting to adapt them to suit different ethnic flavor profiles or to recreate healthier versions of family favorites.

One day flipping through the channels on my tv I came across this book on a show and ordered it. The book is amazing with easy to read recipes. I made over 10 of the recipes and they were all amazing. I also like that some if the recipes have pictures which give the reader a visual incentive. I did not read the intro, because I know the nutritional value, where it comes from, but one of these days I'll skim through it.I definitely recommend buying this book because it will increase your appreciation to an incredibly nutritional food such as quinoa. Your will become a true professional quinoa chef that your family and your friends will enjoy.

This book is quite impressive with its ability to draw the reader into the story.Although sad and maybe disturbing, the conversations written were dazzelingas they made me see, taste and smell an experience I have never had.I felt I was there at times.I felt an immediate emotional attachment to the characters,to the conversation and the desperation of the night.I do not know how to describe this since the descriptions are so vivid and well written.Clear and descriptive writing left me reading the entire story in one sitting.Yes the story may be sad and maybe true but clearly an awakening of emotions.To me this is what a great writer does_MAKE YOU FEEL!I cannot wait to see the video as it is clearly a story that must be told.This book is definitely worth reading with a thumbs up and many shining stars.

Knowing that is soooo true not only for Danny but for so many like him!!Always trough the whole book I was asking WHY??? All this human and intellectual potential, WASTED!! all this systematic effort to destroy yourself, to negate what you are, where you came from WHY???What happen so terrible in his life that triggered all this, destroyed his self esteem, the pride for himself?. WHY was no help for him available when it was time to reverse the auto destruction?. Was he perhaps badly bullied in his young years or may be ignored by peers?A person like him must be hurting so so much just to flip and try to make a statement to negate himself...his own being. But also it is the mental ailment that is paramount that in a crucial point of his life pushed him to the path of no return...What is so heartbreaking is this nostalgic sentiment of his early persona, his siblings, of his mother playing the piano, his plush clean smelling bed ...whom he was when it was still hope...What is the roll of the society to prevent this? What is my individual roll as a human being ?I see this book with all the elements to be a fabulous theater play. It could be a plus extra bonus if the play could be seen in schools.and be acted by teen age actors.Sad kuddos to the writter, for this excellent, fast passed, well written book ...May be a wake up call for a reality that we all know that is there but is so painful that most just pretend is not ? Negating a reality it makes it not non existing, is still there! ... and crying for help ...

I can't get this book out of my head. It's a brilliant way to look at the power of addiction, the power of pot. It punctuates the point that recovery from addiction can rarely if ever be accomplished by one. It takes two or more to crawl out of the whirlpool that is addiction.Weed seems to now be a powerful "super virus" infecting our society. What was once a naturally mild hallucinogenic substance has been morphed into a powerful high THC product, recovery resistant, causing overdoses and ruined lives.I wish I could buy this in paper form to share with my grandkids, with schools, with families trying to guide their adolescent children through the minefield of our drug normalized and commercialized world.This true story is also told in a brief version on MomsStrong.org

I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading this. I assumed that the plot would basically be about an addict who was experiencing remorse in jail, as would be implied in the title. Oh how wrong I was...A Night in Jail takes you through a mental roller coaster in the space of roughly 11 hours. After being drawn into the story from the first few pages, you can't help but finish the book to find out where the story is leading. The plot is at times shocking and sad, but never boring, as there are enough twists and turns to keep you engaged.The novella is complex, the subject thought provoking, and throughout the story, you really aren't sure who the protagonist is. This is a must-read for anyone reaching adulthood and beyond. Ms. Swan's writing has nuances of Dickens' A Christmas Carol and reads smoothly and quickly. Spare an afternoon for A Night in Jail and you will not be disappointed.

Two thumbs up for this satisfying and hair-raising story of addiction. I would love for young people everywhere to read this story. However, the language is authentic to what one would hear in jail: so buyer beware. With so many voices claiming that marijuana is harmless I am glad to have an account that illustrates the dangers and consequences that are common and pervasive with its’ use.

"A Night In Jail" had me from page one. It's a gripping account about the power of addiction, chronicling the larger consequences of seemingly minor mistakes. With great attention to detail, authors Swan & Anderson put us in the belly of one young man's fall from grace, leaving us emotionally riveted to him and the odd characters he encounters. Despite the sad subject matter, a layer of hope and redemption serve as a foundation throughout the narrative, making the journey well worth taking. I couldn't recommend this book highly enough and look forward to seeing the short film that follows.

We actually read this for our bookclub and at first I thought mhh, such a tiny book and the subject issue was not really book club material but it was a good read, and surprised all of us. The issue of mental health very well written and I hurt for the families who are helplessly watching a family member with mental health issues.

This is much more easily understood than I expected. The math is very easy to follow. It's filling in a lot of gaps in my understanding of some very important aspects of Intelligent Design.

I've been a software engineer for almost 40 years and I always had the feeling that there was something wrong with random mutation and natural selection creating complex systems. That doesn't work for writing software and so why would it work for DNA?This book took my feelings about the subject and laid them out mathematically. Now it's much more clear where those feelings came from and why undirected evolutionary mechanisms can't work. Great book!

I enjoyed this book immensely. The arguments are powerful and devistating for those that can appreciate them. Unfortunately only mathematicians and electrical engineers study information theory, and most biologists can't seem to grasp it's basic ideas, let alone it's profound implications. Darwin's hypothesis would have never gotten off the ground if we knew then what we know now.

Having a Bachelors and Master’s degree in Computer Science, and being intrigued by the failures of Darwinian evolution, I truly found this to be my favorite book on Evolution. To have one book touch on two of my favorite topics was a rare find!The information in this book is phenomenal. It baffles me to see so many logical, rational individuals refusing to give up on Darwinian evolution despite the overwhelming evidence against it.OUTSTANDING BOOK.

Amazing read. Computer simulations that attempt to validate Evolution do exactly the opposite. All programs are programmed.

This is a fine Introductory text.

A good overview of the informational challenges within evolution, especially digital evolutionary systems.

The idea of a gold standard has been around for centuries and periodically supported entire economies for long periods of time. In this book the author makes an interesting case for the return to a national and international monetary system based on gold. While some may dispute his historical foundations or economic theories, he makes a cogent argument that logically leads to using gold as the medium of exchange for commerce. As part of any broad survey of contemporary economic literature this book deserves a place on the reading list.

About the Author

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, and winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. He served as a decorated commander in the Red Army during World War II before he was arrested for anti-Soviet propaganda and sentenced to eight years in a labor camp, where he drew inspiration for his controversial novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Exiled in 1974, he returned to Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and died in Moscow in 2008.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn burst on the literary scene in 1962 with his short novel "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich". It depicted an ordinary day in the life of an ordinary inmate in one of the Siberian labor-camps of the Soviet Gulag. Solzhenitsyn's next major novel was published in 1968 under the title "The First Circle". It was a depiction of life in a "sharashka", which stood at the other end of the spectrum of Gulag prisons. A "sharashka" was the slang name by which inmates referred to the research and development laboratories of the Soviet Gulag labor camp system. Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians sent to the Gulag were, if they were lucky, assigned to a sharashka to work on projects that might prove useful to Stalin in his quest for ironclad security and his war with capitalist imperialism. Compared to the Siberian labor-camp of Ivan Denisovich, a sharashka was cushy; to be sure, it too was part of the Gulag, and the Gulag was hell, but a sharashka was, in Dantean terms, "the first circle of hell".This 741-page novel covers four days (Dec. 24-27, 1949) in a sharashka in Moscow known as Marfino -- 300 prisoners and 50 guards. The novel begins with a Soviet diplomat making an anonymous phone call to the American embassy to alert it of Soviet espionage focused on the atomic bomb. The embassy's phones are bugged and the phone call is recorded, but the Soviet security service doesn't know who the caller was. So inmate engineers and scientists at the Marfino sharashka are assigned the task of identifying the traitor, as quickly as possible.In the novel, Solzhenitsyn adds considerable depth and detail to the portrayal of the life of zeks (Gulag inmates) furnished in "Ivan Denisovich". He also uses the book to deliver a scathing critique of the Soviet system -- its ideological absurdities, its bureaucratic infighting and inefficiencies, its dishonesty and hypocrisy, and its cruelty. To top it off, the novel contains a devastatingly mocking and chilling portrait of Josef Stalin (see Chapters 19-23). Solzhenitsyn realized that as originally written, the novel was far too critical of the Soviet Union for it to see the light of day (this was in the mid-60's), so he "self-censored" it, excising nine chapters altogether and revising, or softening, those details sure to be most offensive to Soviet sensibilities. That self-censored version was published in 1968 under the English title "The First Circle", but even as expurgated it was not deemed fit for publication within the Soviet Union (and, indeed, that expurgated version contributed to the decision to expel Solzhenitsyn from the Soviet Union in 1974).This is the original, unexpurgated novel, in a form that Solzhenitsyn continued to tweak and revise. It has been brilliantly translated by Harry T. Willetts, who worked closely with Solzhenitsyn. Distinguishing it from the truncated version is the initial word "in" in the title. IN THE FIRST CIRCLE is the best Russian novel from the twentieth century that I have so far encountered in my ongoing survey of Russian literature in translation. It is a masterpiece.Though nominally covering only four days in late 1949, the novel contains the back stories of dozens of characters, stretching back to the days of the Bolshevik Revolution. It is superbly plotted. Its characterizations of about two dozen zeks (and their wives) are sensitive and endearing. In addition to the penetrating critique of the Soviet system and the detailed portrayal of the Gulag, the novel also contains many perceptive observations about human beings in general. It is rich in historical detail. And, in the best tradition of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, it is rich in its exploration of moral and philosophical matters.For the title to this review, I have appropriated lines relating to the diplomat who made the anonymous phone call to the American embassy that triggered the four days of the novel. Heretofore, he had conducted himself according to the law that "we are given only one life", and thus he married well, accumulated the nicest material objects available on his side of the Iron Curtain, and even travelled abroad. He is soon to be posted to New York as part of the Soviet Union's delegation to the United Nations. But he has a spiritual and moral crisis of sorts, as a result of which he becomes aware of another law -- "that we are given only one conscience, too." "A life laid down cannot be reclaimed, nor can a ruined conscience." That's just one of the moral/philosophical conundrums Solzhenitsyn explores in this great novel.

"August 1914" kicks off the epic "Red Wheel" as Solzhenitsyn tries to capture the coming of the Russian Revolution in a series of novels. Another man's book is on Solzhenitsyn's mind; how can a Russian novelist write an epic on war and not confront Tolstoy and "War and Peace"? Tolstoy even makes a brief appearance at the start of the book. Solzhenitsyn guides the reader through the disastrous Russian invasion of East Prussia in August 1914 and unveils a number of characters-some real and some imaginary. There are haunting portraits of General Samsanov and Tsar Nicholas II. There are also descriptions of the battle and Solzhenitsyn's background from World War Two help him a great deal; these are some of the greatest battle scenes I have ever read. He guides the reader through the staff headquarters and to the front lines. He also offers unforgettable characters drawn from all of Russian society: a well off family at home, young officers connecting with the men, radical students, gentle peasants serving as troops. While his narrative is excellent, Solzhenitsyn is not as strong when he attempts to mimic the "camera eye" used by John Dos Passos in the USA trilogy. Nor does he quite succeed when he lists a number of headlines from the newspapers or offers detailed history in small print. But these are minor flaws that do not take away from the grand epic.If you are reading the work in English, make sure you use the version translated by H.T. Willetts that was released in 1989 and FSG published the paperback in 2000. This is the translation included in the Kindle. This version, unlike the original, contains a scathing look at Lenin as well as a detailed description of the rise and death of Stolypin, the one Russian statesman who may have been able to lead Tsarist Russia through the chaos it would succumb to during the Great War.Be warned. This is an epic undertaking. The book is almost a 1,000 pages and I advise you keep notes on characters, events and places. This is not a book for everyone. But it is a great epic and, if not up to the level of "War and Peace", "August 1914" is still in the same ballpark. How many other recent novels can we make that claim about?

Outstanding novel. I had previously read the Glenny translation which contains the Soviet sanitized version. This translation, by Willetts, which includes material from Lenin in Zurich, shows what Solzhenitsyn would have written without the censorship. As others reviewers have mentioned this novel follows the initial battles between the Germans and Russian at the start of WWI. While a novel, Solzhenitsyn, in the manner of Tolstoy describing the battle of Borodino, strives for historical accuracy. Descriptions of military leadership machinations will be familiar to anyone who has worked with the US Federal bureaucracy or the military. While the book is fairly long, it moves quickly and while not a light read keeps your interest. I highly recommend this novel as it is among a few that described the descent of the Russian Empire into the failed experiment of Soviet Russia.
