Andrew, Peter and Kate have put out such a beautiful second edition with this cookbook. It's filled with such beautiful imagery and words, and really invokes the cozy overcast vibes that the PNW offers. It's such a great resource for cooking inspiration and doesn't limit you to following exact recipes. I'll flip through it just to get ideas, pick a recipe and usually heavily alter it to fit whatever I have at hand that's in season. That's one of the best things about this cookbook. If you're wanting to follow a recipe exactly, you certainly can, but if you're the type of home cook that will improvise, this book will suit you really well.Also, it had to be said, it's a lovely object. Would make a wonderful gift for someone who appreciates seasonal cooking and comforting unassuming food.

This is truly an amazing cookbook! I must admit I'm ever so slightly biased, being from Portland and all. But aside from the culinary nostalgia, this cookbook has already earned a place on my kitchen shelf (as opposed to most of my collection, which is housed in the library). The Myrtlewood Cookbook is full of inspiring recipes and gorgeous photos. This is the type of cookbook that urges you to branch out, change things up a bit, and to cook for the pure enjoyment of cooking and eating. The directions are low key, and the tone is warm and easy going. The recipes are mostly vegetarian, along with some seafood recipes and mention here or there of fowl. Andrew has created a whole new kind of cookbook here. Buy it - you won't regret it!

Typically, when I buy a cook book, no matter the cuisine or level of difficulty I end up going with the one filled with pictures that make me want to get home and make something new and delicious. It's always a bonus if the recipes are easy to follow but as someone who enjoys cooking and does their fair share of it I don't mind if things get a little tricky. Myrtlewood meets all of my cook book criteria. It's filled with beautiful photography of amazing looking food and a wide variety of ingredients. The recipes are easy to follow with little tips, stories and side notes for the reader making it all the more enjoyable to use. Myrtlewood is a book that will inspire any cook to create something yummy with fresh local ingredients.

This thoughtful, and elegantly presented cookbook is the perfect addition to the bookshelf of any seasoned home cook as well as those who wish to take their culinary skills to the next level. Creative and comforting recipes abound as well as a well-considered list of kitchen and pantry essentials, which in my opinion, is indispensable. The photography is stunning and instantly transports you to the Pacific Northwest. Many cookbooks try to do too much, to appeal to everyone, and this one feels especially bound to the time and place in which it was crafted. Do yourself a favor, and allow yourself to be immersed in this delicious world.

I love to flip through this beautiful cookbook whenever I need inspiration for a simple cozy meal. The photography is truly inviting and makes me appreciate the rainy Portland winters. Looking forward to sharing this little taste of the Northwest with my friends and family. The new edition is a great size and is really great to handle, not clunky or heavy and with a soft but sturdy cover - I think it will make an excellent gift for the holidays.

I used this book for a graduate course I took in School Law. It was quite helpful in sorting out the myriad legal issues dealing with education today.

I'm just an average teacher trying to stay out of trouble. For example, I just KNOW that kid has a cell phone - can I ask him to empty his pockets?This book provides a lot of great information, presented in a way that a non-lawyer can understand and digest. The information is presented in a way that is relevant to both teachers and administrators. It's geared towards federal laws, with comments about when and how state laws may modify things. (I'd like to find a version of this book oriented specifically to my state, now!) The best part of this book was the end-chapter summaries, which made good, helpful generalizations.The biggest weakness of this book was the organization. I read it cover-to-cover, and I didn't notice any issues. However, later, when I wanted to go back to a specific topic, the index and table of contents weren't as helpful as they could have been. I eventually found the section I wanted, but it was more work than it should have been.

I had to purchase this for one of my teacher credentialing classes. It was dense at times, but I like that at the end of each chapter they have a summary of the main points. It made reading it a lot easier.The only thing I didn't like was the price. I don't really see why it's so expensive.

Expensive, but a great reference book for all aspiring principals.

This book has been set up perfectly! I am amazed that I graduated with a degree in education and was never required to take a course covering this material. Every future or current teacher needs to have a copy on hand and should probably read it before entering the classroom.

Amazon's price was compatible with everyone else for a slightly used book. I paid extra for the 2 day shipping, and it was delivered the next day! The book was in great shape for "used", with just a little bit of highlighting, which I would have done anyway. I used Amazon gift certificates that I bought in a store,and then I paid extra with a credit card. The whole checkout proces on-line was so quick & easy. As for the book itself, it has very small print, but it's full of useful information. I copied the first chapter and then enlarged it, so it would be easier to read. After that, I got used to the print size. I will probably keep the book for future reference.

I never write reviews but felt I must for this book. My daughter is dyslexic. This book was recommend by someone I highly respect therefore I ignored the negative reviews. I'm glad I did. This book has completely changed my daughter's ability to learn. Davis is definitely not a scam artist and he doesn't need any degrees to validate the success of his program. Since he is dyslexic, he understands how their minds work; something a nondyslexic person can not fatham. Plus, this program has helped thousands since he developed it decades ago. Dyslexic children do not learn with phonics. A hammer is a useful tool, but if you beat someone over the head with it, it becomes a murder weapon. My child knows her phonics rules but she still couldn't read without a laborious process that was causing her to hate reading. The step by step instructions in this book set her free. I was skeptical after I read through the process but, she responded EXACTLY as the author said she would. The process may seem bizarre to a nondyslexic but just do it. I was amazed. Thank you Ron Davis!

I bought the previous version of this book more than 8 years ago. I was 21, and although I would've been ashamed to have admitted it then, I hadn't read a single book cover to cover in my 21 years, including school assignments. I had really struggled in school through my entire childhood and teenage years, and nobody really understood why. I failed every English class in high school. I just wasn't able to read, and it was immensely frustrating. I tested very well, and was clearly intelligent. I got deeply involved in computer programming from a very early age, so my intelligence level was high enough. I could write in English just fine. Yet I still struggled. Nobody ever diagnosed me with dyslexia, but this book looked interesting, so I bought it on a whim.By the time I bought this book, I was doing well working in the computer industry, but I never really understood why I couldn't read. Well, to be clear, I could *read* and understand words; I wasn't illiterate by any means, but I found it impossible to get through more than a few pages of text. I had severe reading comprehension problems. My mind would read ahead, wander around, and mis-read things, and I would have to read and re-read the same text many times to really understand it (if I cared enough to learn it, as I did for computer programming).I read this book (slowly and painfully at first, as always), and had a bit of an epiphany. I have applied Mr. Davis's techniques using the "mind's eye", and in the past 8 years I have read literally hundreds of books cover to cover. I now love reading, and pick up a new book at least once a week.I still find myself struggling with my dyslexia if I am too tired, but that's the only time his techniques are not completely automatic. After years of practice, it's entirely automatic. I also (when possible) carefully choose printed books based on their typesetting (and choose the font on my computer carefully), which helps immensely as well -- I never knew that fonts and spacing could make such a difference before reading this book.Mr. Davis's explanations of the differences in the workings of the mind -- the way that dyslexics can comprehend three dimensional objects in a different way than non-dyslexics -- made so much sense to me. I've always had a very high aptitude for science, mechanics, and complex systems. I've had the ability to visualize all sides of three dimensional objects, with no effort, and I've always thought this was perfectly normal. Of course I wouldn't trade that ability, that aptitude, for normal reading. Just thinking of dyslexia as a different way of visualizing rather than a disorder is a huge leap in dealing with it.I know there are a number of negative reviews of this book, claiming that it's pseudoscience, there's no research, or that the techniques seem "silly". Personally, I don't care. The ability to read, to really read and comprehend (and quickly, at that!), has made such an enormous difference in my life that I recommend this book to everyone who will listen. If I had read this book when I was 10 years old rather than 21, I can't imagine how much it would've changed my early years.Please, if you have a child who is struggling through school but you know to be super smart, read this book and *try it*.Very gratefully indebted to Mr. Davis,Jeremy Cole

My brillant grandson, a dyslexic, was told in first grade that they were going to tie a rope around his desk so he could not get out and walk around the classroom. STUPID IDIOTS! We got him the RIGHT kind of help from INTELLIGENT people so his college work was an easy walk for him plus learning all the codes necessary to become a strong, loving, wonderful police officer in Houston, Texas!!I

I am a neuropsychologist and supervised dyslexia assessment for more than a decade. This idea was new to me. I tried it on a bright child, whom I called my "guinea pig" and he caught on. I had his mother in the sessions so she could learn from me. She reported that he jumped two grades in reading in two weeks. I told her to keep it up over the summer. So, I'm impressed.

WONDERFUL, My goddaughter has dyslexia and this helped her mom understand how to relate. I tried to explain the experience as I myself suffer from it. This helped give me the words that were bouncing around in my mind. Anyone giving this a bad review must have no clue as to what it feels like to have this. This little girl is sweet and smart as a whip but they were making her feel stupid with their labels. She is now much happier and making much better progress. I m NOT saying that academics have it ALL wrong but they do miss the mark on how to relate to the people with this condition.If your kid has this you can not go wrong with this book. It will help them as much as you. There is no reason to fear Dyslexia, it's just different way our minds process information.

I purchased both the Audio version and the paperback. It was helpful to go through both. The audio book is helpful because the author reads it and goes through the steps of this process with someone. The paperback is helpful because it gives you script that can be used to help someone with dyslexia. Davis has great insight on this subject and I am amazed how my kids have responded to this process. I highly recommend.

This is an incredible book. It came a little late for me to be able to help 2 of my sons, who have dyslexia, but explains so much.That it is written by a person who has Dyslexia makes it so much more relevant. The teachings can be done by a caring parent at home, for a child, or a loved one for an adult. And now I do understand that it is a true GIFT that can be controlled by the giftee. I almost never buy a book before borrowing it from the library since I'm so choosy when it comes to children's literature, but I bought this book because my child loves umbrellas, and the cover art was so inviting, that I couldn't resist. What a great chance I took! This book is beautifully illustrated and totally sets the rainy mood. The umbrella is a sweet character that loves to help and be kind to others. Can it get any better than that for a children's book? I doubt it! The umbrella inlcudes all creatures big and small in its protection from the rain. Such a sweet and uplifting storyline! The Big Umbrella is a welcome addition to my family's library of books that are socially concious, peace promoting, and inclusive of all. The message of the book is great and the pictures are lovely. I love that kindness, inclusion, and diversity are addressed, but it’s a very short read. I guess for such a large book (in dimension), I expected a book that would take longer than 30 seconds to read. This book may be good for babies or little ones with short attention spans, but I don’t imagine this would interest a toddler. I think you will just need to make the decision if this very short story would be good for you/ your family. I really wanted to love this book, but it’s just okay for me. Again, I love the message but I can’t say I would recommend it. If you want a book on kindness, I would look to “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller since that book also discusses kindness and the characters are diverse.

The story behind this book is just as beautiful as the story inside this book! A mother and daughter dreamed this up together--I want to thank both of them for dreaming up and creating a book with such an important message: "the more you give, the more you get". The artwork is whimsical and lovely, every bit as warm and pure as the message.I also want to thank the publisher Simon & Schuster/ Paula Wiseman books for publishing an ORIGINAL children's story--that's happening less and less--so BRAVO!!

The words are just enough for the story paired with the page-by-page delightful illustrations of those invited to shelter under that “big umbrella”, and page by page, everyone is invited. It’s what I call a big smile of a book, one to read, enjoy and discuss with a child or a group of children. It reminds me of the concept of everyone having a seat at the table, and it is so good!

Bravo to Amy and Juniper Bates! This book is a delightful and imaginative story with a metaphor that stirs the soul. It is timely and profound, yet simple enough for young children to grasp its important message. The illustrations are as beautiful and touching as the story. It is a true work of art made even more special by the fact that it was written and illustrated by a mother-child team.

A simple, easy book about how to be an "includer". My kindergarten English language learners loved it. EAsy to understand, not too wordy, and the perfect length for 4 - 7 year old kids.

This book seemed great when i read reviews online but it wasn't as great as i thought it was going to be. The message from the book is great - inclusion and helping people - but there were very few words in the book, it was mostly pictures. It was a little boring for my two year old and i assume it would be boring for older children as well.
