Review

“Andrew Barton’s voice is warm and his food is beautiful. The sense of place—the ambiance—will draw you in and make you feel freshly appreciative of simple, everyday possibilities. In a world overflowing with cookbooks, this quiet gem stands out.”—Mollie Katzen, author of the Moosewood Cookbook"What’s great: 100 nearly meditative recipes for soups, salads, sandwiches, dinners, pastas, accompaniments, breakfasts and sweets, organized by season."—Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB.org)“[Part of] the 2017 author lineup for Wordstock.”—Artlandia“Andrew Barton, the chef behind the Secret Restaurant in Portland, Oregon, cooks food that he feels exemplifies the region.”—New Worlder“It’s a sensory thing.”—PowellsBooks.Blog"Experience beautiful home cooking that takes its cues from the kitchen gardens and forest harvests of the Pacific Northwest."—AM Northwest (KATU)"A taste of home with seasonal salads and risottos."—I'll Have What She's Having"With The Myrtlewood Cookbook, Andrew Barton has created an arresting collection of recipes gathered from Secret Restaurant Portland. Accompanied by lush photography, his instructions are thoughtful, meticulous, and spiced with personal guidance; I felt as if I was cooking in the kitchen with a highly skilled, yet patient friend."—Elliott Bay Book Company, Fall Booknotes"This cookbook is unabashedly PNW to its core, from the cutting boards carved from native Myrtlewood trees to the mushrooms that pop up in soup, risotto, and pizza. Unlike most cookbooks, Barton’s recipes read more like an actual book; each dish spans multiple pages with paragraphs in the place of ordered steps. Barton’s conversational tone is certainly homey, as is the food itself."—Seattle Met'The recipes in the book are flavorful, easy-to-prepare, and attractive to serve."—Epicurus"Barton writes as if he were standing in the kitchen with you, offering cooking tips within the recipes."—The Register-Guard"...devoted to Northwest ingredients"—Willamette Week"Helps readers to discover new ways to prep vegetable-based dishes."—Heirloom Gardener

I love every recipe. I had the honor of attending a dinner at Andrew’s house long ago and he is truly an artist! Such a good staple.

Such a stunning book. Peter Schweitzer does an amazing job capturing these wonderful recipes. GET IT RIGHT NOW!!!!!! You won't regret this purchase!

Andrew, Peter and Kate have put out such a beautiful second edition with this cookbook. It's filled with such beautiful imagery and words, and really invokes the cozy overcast vibes that the PNW offers. It's such a great resource for cooking inspiration and doesn't limit you to following exact recipes. I'll flip through it just to get ideas, pick a recipe and usually heavily alter it to fit whatever I have at hand that's in season. That's one of the best things about this cookbook. If you're wanting to follow a recipe exactly, you certainly can, but if you're the type of home cook that will improvise, this book will suit you really well. Also, it had to be said, it's a lovely object. Would make a wonderful gift for someone who appreciates seasonal cooking and comforting unassuming food.

This is truly an amazing cookbook! I must admit I'm ever so slightly biased, being from Portland and all. But aside from the culinary nostalgia, this cookbook has already earned a place on my kitchen shelf (as opposed to most of my collection, which is housed in the library). The Myrtlewood Cookbook is full of inspiring recipes and gorgeous photos. This is the type of cookbook that urges you to branch out, change things up a bit, and to cook for the pure enjoyment of cooking and eating. The directions are low key, and the tone is warm and easy going. The recipes are mostly vegetarian, along with some seafood recipes and mention here or there of fowl. Andrew has created a whole new kind of cookbook here. Buy it - you won't regret it!

Typically, when I buy a cook book, no matter the cuisine or level of difficulty I end up going with the one filled with pictures that make me want to get home and make something new and delicious. It's always a bonus if the recipes are easy to follow but as someone who enjoys cooking and does their fair share of it I don't mind if things get a little tricky. Myrtlewood meets all of my cook book criteria. It's filled with beautiful photography of amazing looking food and a wide variety of ingredients. The recipes are easy to follow with little tips, stories and side notes for the reader making it all the more enjoyable to use. Myrtlewood is a book that will inspire any cook to create something yummy with fresh local ingredients.

This thoughtful, and elegantly presented cookbook is the perfect addition to the bookshelf of any seasoned home cook as well as those who wish to take their culinary skills to the next level. Creative and comforting recipes abound as well as a well-considered list of kitchen and pantry essentials, which in my opinion, is indispensable. The photography is stunning and instantly transports you to the Pacific Northwest. Many cookbooks try to do too much, to appeal to everyone, and this one feels especially bound to the time and place in which it was crafted. Do yourself a favor, and allow yourself to be immersed in this delicious world.

I love to flip through this beautiful cookbook whenever I need inspiration for a simple cozy meal. The photography is truly inviting and makes me appreciate the rainy Portland winters. Looking forward to sharing this little taste of the Northwest with my friends and family. The new edition is a great size and is really great to handle, not clunky or heavy and with a soft but sturdy cover - I think it will make an excellent gift for the holidays.

A story book as much as a recipe book, Andrew, Peter and Kate's creation is beautiful and accessible. The words, recipes, and photos inspire and you could spend as much time reading the book as a bed time story as actually cooking from its pages. I love its focus on simple, straightforward, accessible, seasonal and local ingredients. Plus, techniques that are more fun and innovative than challenging and daunting. The perfect book to cozy up to this fall and winter!
