Nice and updated version, lots of cool facts and excellent graphics.

The atlas has a lot of good information in addition to maps.

I wanted an atlas that had a page for each country individually. instead they are grouped and pictured by continent. not quite what I was looking for.

The CC Challenge A cartography book is gorgeous, but expensive. This little atlas works great in lieu of the CC book.

A simple but effective running of the history, with comments on the individual recordings, of the songs that appear on James Browns first major album hit, "Live at the Apollo" recorded in October 1962 alongside the then occurring critical world event of the Cuban Missile Crisis, makes for an effective time capsule telling by Douglas Wolk of the making of this classic recording.While the author veers towards the over stated at times (did the 1,500 in the audience based on the limited public news released really behave as they did based on the belief they could die in a week!) he does a much better job of nailing the history of James Brown. These include how he got to make this recording against his record company's indifference; his on balance limited hit record success to date offset by his constant touring of an all action performance, but most of all that what was on show here was one man's personal and stylistic interpretations of a suite of songs that covered black music across the 20s to the early 60s. Some songs had undergone numerous adaptations and recordings by others plus JB before the versions done here (the ripping of of other peoples songs seems almost to have been a lifelong JB hallmark). What was really being performed was an exercise where songs could only last for less than a minute to over ten minutes as JB backed by his ever tight band riding on their leaders moods and his reading of the audience emotions laid down one of the truly original live recordings made.The fact that the LP was in popular demand for many months after to be played in full on R&B radio stations at a time when single hits were paramount was testament that something unique that connected with the black audiences of 1962/1963 had occurred and it was to be some time before JB reconnected in such a way again (and certainly never again with another live album, despite several attempts).Wolk also does a very good expose of Brown's ego and resulting mis-treatment of all around him plus how the recording was not a true full recording from having to be adapted and edited from the true JB live revue show, which while visually spectacular would not have translated into such an effective audio format.A story telling which is certainly "on the good foot" throughout.

A great short read about the live recording sessions that led to the creation of one of the seminal R&B albums. The writing is punchy, respectful, and never overwrought -- except for the glaring and jarring detours into the Cuban missile crisis. The episode is clearly relevant to the story, because the concert in question took place in roughly the same 24-hour time span that the crisis was unfolding, but while everyone in the Apollo that night may have had the crisis on their minds, the digressions into what the fighter planes and the decision makers were doing at exactly the same time that James Brown was wiping sweat off his brow as he switched gears and tore into another song are distracting and ultimately tell us little about why the crisis made the night charged. Wolk should have stuck to the performances and the music or else found a better way of weaving the crisis into the book.

Given a book-length space to fill, many magazine writers do what comes naturally: they write a book-length magazine article. Wolk, however, approaches his narrative from the top down, treating the long form with the reverence and intricate attention of a clockmaker god. His story moves chronologically in an evening's frame, but it's also shot through with a series of gears and patterns, nibble-sized pieces, and odd bits of synchronicity that align in unexpected choruses. Gliding across it all, of course, is the electric, eccentric energy of James Brown. Scrapbookers, beware: this is more than simple homage. It's a work that stands independently, with one hell of a soundtrack to boot!

I like good music writing -- it can be as lyrical and inspiring as the music it is about, albeit in another art form -- but sometimes, some music defies the written word -- Volk has worked hard here and brings us lots of facts -- but James Brown on this record in particular defies the written word -- all you can say is that some yowling and howling is so other-worldly that you gotta hear it to get it -- thanks for this valiant attempt -- but I think that after all is said and done, maybe words are not much help when it comes to this particular transcendent experience....

the cuban missile crisis almost brought an end to life on earth as we know it. who saved the day? maybe it was j.f.k.... or maybe it was the number one soul brother james brown. douglass wolk makes a good case for the godfather of soul in this well-researched, compelling, funky good time book.

She is designed to live in this world and if A.I.s were to take over she would not fit in so well.Emergent picks up where Unbound left off. Synthia is on the run and barely escapes a trap laid by government agencies. She also has to avoid the other androids that are trying to absorb or kill her. She also must deal with a new A.I. that wants to use her to escape his confinement.If you're looking for an android vs android vs A.I. vs humans story this book is for you!

I have followed the Android Chronicles from the first book and watched Synthia Cross change and grow. The plot has kept her on the run for the entire series and with Emergent she faces her last battle. I wondered how this would end and if Synthia would even survive. She is very smart and using her brain and the programs she has completed for herself she arrives at a interesting solution. She is still around and she is still watching to make sure there are no other androids to cause trouble in the world. A nice ending when it looked like it was not possible.I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

In the book Emergent, author Lance Erlick continues the story of Synthia, the most advanced artificial intelligence android ever built. And she is fighting to keep other AI’s, the FBI, special ops or several other foreign government groups from capturing her and making a super army by replicating her. And now someone keeps trying to draw her to join them. Who is this mysterious voice she keeps hearing?This was a good fast paced book that continues the series. I would recommend this book.I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Emergent is the story of the perfect human/android weapon on the run. Honestly, I thought I would enjoy this book much more than I did. I got lost somewhere and I stayed confused for most of the story. The concept is a bit far fetched for me. Overall, it was not what I expected. Unfortunately, it's not my type of book. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Loved reading it and all of the books by this author.I’ve read many of her books. I like this author and would choose her over others.

I'm glad I got this as a box set because I would have been disappointed to buy each book separately given how incredibly short they are. I'm not sure why the author didn't just cut out some parts (the entire section about Abigail/Joshua) and make it into one book instead of 3.

I like Amish love stories because their lives and their love are so basic. They fill their time with the work of several. They don't use the modern inventions to do their work so life is all they have time for. They actually talk to each other. They work and live and serve and love.

God has made each of us a soul mate in life. He did not make us to live alone but to have someone by our side.

5 Star Rating because I enjoyed every chapter in the book. Highly recommended to all readers. Brenda Maxfield has proved to be an excellent author of clean Amish Romance books.

Just so you are aware...there was a printing error with this book (at least the copy I received)...there is a sticker inside that says if you want a 5" block then you need to enlarge your pattern when copying to 118%. Otherwise the blocks finish 4.25". Having said that, I love this applique book! My quilting goal this year was to master needle turn applique, especially those teeny narrow stems, and this was the perfect book to inspire me towards that accomplishment. It is full of helpful tips and picture guides, and the patterns are so lovely, yet simple enough to execute. I have never been inspired to make something as tedious as a Baltimore album quilt, but using small appliqued blocks like the ones offered in this book is the perfect way to add a pretty embellishment to any pieced project, or to build pieced blocks around. I also really appreciated that the most of the book's pictures of the patterns' finished blocks show the quilting details really well and show how quilting can add another layer of character to the blocks. I didn't find the printing error to be a problem...I liked the option of making a smaller block (and have already finished one which came out great, thanks to the tips in the book), or making some slightly larger. One tip I would like to pass on is instead of pinning your vinyl overlay onto your pattern to help you place your applique pieces correctly, use a couple of rolled bits of painter's tape, which makes the overlay easier to lift and work under. An awesome book I will get a LOT of use out of....I've already gotten started on my next four blocks!

What a wonderful sampling of more traditional types of applique! The authors give clear and concise instructions on how to excecute applique techniques. The shapes and instructions are well suited for a beginner, but can be used for advanced quilters as well,...just change the size of the patterns to suit your expertise level.

My wife wanted this book. I was personally surprised that the delivery took so long to reach us. I had ordered something else simultaneously and it arrived within two days of the date of the order. This book was within the projected time frame for delivery, but to me it seemed a long time.

This is a great how-to applique book for the beginner and learning new techniques for the more advanced applique quilter. Clear and easy to follow instructions in color take you thru all the steps, from supplies to sewing and to the finished product. Many wonderful block designs for all levels of applique.

I have used some designs from this book to make blocks for charity quilts. They are very pretty and cheerful. These two ladies are so talented.

Saw Credo Mutwa referenced in a book about Adrian Boshier, an African explorer. Credo Mutwa was able to explain much of the African archeological finds that many of the white archeologist considered recent doodles by Bushmen. His book explains some of the African cosmos and mythology which shows the great parallels in most aboriginal beliefs now being reflected in much of the "New Age" thinking. Very enjoyable and informative.

For someone from a Western background who has experienced an intuitive call to learn about different ancient traditions, this book is a valuable learning tool that provides true African insight to mysteries and sacred history that offers food for thought. The book is not necessarily about just Shamanism but includes more knowledge that others outside this Sacred tradition would typically never be privy to. Credo Mutwa is a renowned Sangoma in the Zulu Tradition and shares insightful knowledge from an ancient mystical tradition, not a traditional history for the rational or linear mindset. But if you can open your mind and enjoy ancient myth, spiritual traditions and prophecy from an African(Zulu) perspective, it is definitely worth reading. A rare NATIVE AND FIRSTHAND look inside this particular tradition and worldview.

If you wish to learn more about different spiritual paths, this is one of the books you need to own. (Period, end of story.)

Credo Mutwa is an interesting person, and this book is excellent for the library of anyone interested in understanding the spiritual realm. I came to hear of Credo through the work of the late Doctor John E. Mack M.D., a Psychiatrist out of Harvard University. Credo has definitely been in contact with the spiritual realm and has unique information to share with us.

Beautifully written. Crudo is an amazing healer and prophet of our time, his stories have a in depth insight and brings about transformation. I recommend this book to anyone interested in shamanism, healing, and peace.

Great read.

I took an intensive course in Zulu twenty years ago.So I was excited to find Mutwa's text. When immersed in a language, one begins to acquire some of the speakers' view of the world, indeed the universe. This is why I read African folklore and wish that more people would start to tell stories that link us together. The text is at times pedagogical, but that is a small price to pay of these stories.

Credo has many stories to tell us ,they are fascinating,and very true ,a great read I have also heard his interviews.
