Review

“… packed with concrete tools and practices that hold the complexity of trans issues and invite curiosity and critical thinking with an open heart.”  –Rev. Cathy Rion Starr, Unitarian Universalist Minister “… the only one of its kind, with a heightened attention to the intersectionality of identities within the trans lived experience. … There is no other single resource of radical trans allyship that I would recommend to both therapists and clients.” – Shannon Sennott, LICSW, Family Therapist and founder of Translate Gender, Inc. “… the most practical and accessible guide for trans inclusion I have ever read. …If you are interested in learning more about supporting trans people in your family, your workplace, your school, your community and the world, but you only have time to read one book, read this one.” – Tobias K. Davis, Playwright, Novelist, Activist “We can’t know anyone’s gender identity simply by observing them. This fact alone challenges and revolutionizes all of the ways our binary-gender physical, social, mental and emotional spaces are constructed.” – Mushim Patricia Ikeda, Teacher, Author and Diversity Consultant

As a transgender person and an advocate and friend to many other transgender people, I've read a lot of trans-specific books and THIS IS THE BEST ONE. If you have trans people in your life, read this. If you would like to have trans people in your life, read this. If you're a teacher, a librarian, a community or religious leader, a health care provider...read this, and then buy some extra copies for your colleagues and community members. Also, a shout-out to the illustrator, Kai Hofius, who did a magnificent job with the artwork!!

It's so helpful for me, as a trans person, to be able to have resources for my family/friends/community. And this book does what I'm not able to do myself- it helps support people in their journey to use other pronouns and names for me. I wish every church leader and family member and professor already had a copy of this book. But until that happens, I'll keep giving them out.

I really, really, really love this book, so much so that I got my institution to buy a big ol' box of them, and you should too! Give them to everyone you know. There is a lot to appreciate here, from the great illustrations and the appealing design, to the breadth of information that different groups of people (friends, parents, educators, healthcare and human service providers, random curious humans, trans folks themselves who are looking for a broader understanding of our diverse communities) will find useful. But what I appreciate the most is the accessibility of it. This isn't an academic textbook, and it doesn't assume any foundational knowledge in academic-y stuff OR pre-existing fluency with the concepts and language of queer and trans communities. But at the same time, it's not patronizing, condescending or didactic--this is a hard line to walk! Another difficult line is the one between lecturing readers and holding them accountable for their behaviour, and this book aces that as well: the language is not judge-y or shaming, but encouraging of your journey to become a better ally. Not only is it accessible, but the Trans Allyship Workbook is SO practical! I think that's really what makes it stand out from the crowd. I know a lot of well-intentioned folks who would emerge from reading some of the other resources I've seen thinking, "ok great, I understand more about trans people now, and I *want* to show them that I respect and accept them, but HOW DO I STOP ACCIDENTALLY MESSING UP MY COWORKERS' PRONOUNS? My child wants to be called 'they', but how do I get used to that grammar? I think my student might be trans, how do I even find out how to refer to them?" This book is the nuts-and-bolts guide you need--it's called a "workbook" for a reason! There are lots of hands-on activities and step-by-step reflection exercises to help you actually put your good intentions into action. One final note--you will ENJOY reading this. Someone I gave it to reported that in the week it sat on her coffee table, the two teenagers in her house plus her non-reader husband picked it up unprompted and got sucked in. It's well-written (i.e. interesting and not dry), and doesn't feel like a chore to get through.

Fantastic resource; language is accessible and easy to digest vs dense/academic. I bought a copy for myself and for the company I work for. Strongly recommend this purchase!

This is an up-to-date workbook for people looking to increase their trans allyship game. It's written in lay language, and isn't pretentious or elitist. It's approachable and easy to read!
